• Dan and I went to connecticut for the weekend for my cousins wedding.. we came home today and mia's coat looked funny.. now she is circling like crazy and cant lay down for more than a minute and is frantically pacing and itching herself A LOT.. she keeps shaking her whole body like dogs do when they get out of the bath. I'm not sure what is causing this or what to do? đŸ˜• its 1015 here so I can't run out and get benadryl, & I don't have any here.. what should i do?

  • I would bathe her with a soothing non-irritating soap for starters. She may have contacted plants that are causing the itching and washing may help. HOpefully you can get some benadryl in the morning if she is still itching. When any of ours get a flea, they act like that so if you have a flea comb, I would try that as well.

    Good luck!

  • well i gave her the bath already lol, she was still itching, and her neck was raw and a bit bloody from scratching so much, it just seemed to be that one area. feeling like a terrible mommy, i got in the car and drove 20 minutes to my parents, and got my benadryl from there. I get home, after the 20 minute drive back home.. and shes curled up in her bed with maggie and didnt even get up when i walked in the door. i gave her half of a 25mg benadryl pill anyway, so hopefully she will feel better in the morning..

  • That will definately help. It will make her stop itching and then the bath will sooth her skin. Good luck

How is Mia doing? I was a little worried last night, knowing she was acting weird and it being nightime and all. I hope the Benadryl helped.

  • I had that happen to a red/wht, Ringo back in 95. We were hiking around the coast line and there's a lot of plants. Bumps all over his body and I made the mistake of picking him up and he bit me pretty good. He obviously was in pain. My blk/wht had nothing.

  • she was up every two hours freaking out and had two accidents.. she cried for at least an hour this morning.. she refuses to go outside.. she just straightens out her legs and i have to drag her.. then she wants to run right back to the house.. I've given her two benadryl pills so far, and shes still itching.. not nearly as bad but she is still itching none the less.. the last benadryl i gave her was at 8 i think and it is now almost 11, so i may give her another half to see if it helps, beings that i was asleep last night.

  • I think she needs to see a Vet? Since you were away, who was taking care of them? Did they say anything happened?…. bite, bee, spider?

  • Hope she is doing better today. Heather when say Benadryl is it the one in the pink box and how much do you give her? If you have the liquid how much would give them?

  • You can safely give a Basenji 25mg every 4 to 6 hours, as young as 8 weeks

  • Thank you Pat. Jaycee had a few bumps that she really was itching on Sunday and of course more she was itching the more red they became. They are almost all gone today not sure what happen and not sure what to give her. Must have been something in the yard. We do not spay our yard so I know it was not some spray.

  • our roommate watched her.. he said nothing out of the ordinary happened.. she won't walk in the grass when i take her outside.. i think she had to of been stung or biten by something.. to scare her that bad to not want to walk in the grass.. the only thing is that rocky and maggie were not here and mia freaked out because she was alone.. and he had to have dan's mom bring them back so that she would calm down.. could it be anxiety or nerve related?

I would not think so… and since the others came back, I doubt that was the problem. Most times a Vet will tell you if one (maybe two) doses of Benadryl do not solve the problem, there is more going on...and that usually will need a steroid shot .... the way she was acting over night would make me think there is more going on.

    +1

A visit to the vet sounds like a necessity at this point. One normal dose of Benadryl should solve minor issues. If not, then it's something more in depth.

  • well last night i only gave her half of a 25 mg benadryl, so this morning after i read this i gave her a whole one, and she isn't itching now. I will definately call the vet if she starts itching again.

yes flea combs do help with the itching. I have found the ones from JW to be pretty good
