Buddy

  • Yes, most of their size (95%) IMO is there by 7 months… you might get a 1/4" more between then and 1yr... what you get then is body maturity.... depending on their bone structure.

  • @Basenjimamma:

Buddy is awesome. Very pretty boy and huge.

Interesting…Buddy doesn't look huge to me (height or weight)...he looks to be a good weight for his height...he has a tuck-up and in one of the pics looking down he has a waist and looks like his ribs would be visible when he runs.

That's correct because he's a bit floppy. Karen has a full grown tri female that is only 15 lbs and very beautiful too. Somebody paid out for $3000 (she had to be flown across the US) for her then didn't want her. Karen kept her.

Hmm… interesting... sounds like the person that I heard of in Central California that purchased a "show" prospect (but was from the MN/WI area)... but didn't hear that she was given up... price is the same as what I heard they paid.... Bit over the top....

  • Dan, Buddy is so cute. Four Basenjis, you must have your work cut out, lol,

It's my 4th over 34 years. The other 3 are gone from old age. The 3rd died on 4/13 of this year. The most I had at one time was 2.

  • I remember you saying you had recently lost a Basenji now.
We lost Benji in Feb and i'm hoping to find a pup towards the end of the year.

Ok, so I just weighed Otis and he weighs 21.1 lbs and he will be 5 months on 05/05. I did talk to my " breeder" and he said that in the litter Otis was in, all 4 boys ( all boys litter) were consistantly almost 2 lbs larger once they were weaned off of mom. They were given Royal Canine and we kept that up for a week once we got him, now he is on BARF. He was chunky at 18.9 lbs at 4 month check up, but has since then leaned out and he is looking good, IMO. The breeder doesn't know why this litter got bigger than his others, but thinks it might be because it was smaller (only 4) and all boys. Either way I think my vet is way off, lets hope so.

Rit Jean, he was supposed to have started on monday, but due to the holiday it got bumped up for a week, so we start next monday, and I am excited…come on training..

As far as Buddy being huge, I only meant that in lbs for 7 months, but in the pics he looks amazing. I now know what to expect as far as when Otis will be done growing.

Tanza, thanks for that info, that helps figuring out when why what..lol

  • Some B's get all their height by 6 months, my Mickii's litter brother (also was named Buddy) was huge at 5 months… everyone thought he was going to be over 20" tall...ggg but then he just stopped growing... and was maybe just a bit over the standard....

  • I think Buddy is around 18 in.

  • @nobarkus:

I think Buddy is around 18 in.

That is the same as my OJ was and he topped out at 26 to 28lbs… 26lbs and he looked lean, 28lbs and he was in good show weight, 29lbs and he was in better show weight...

  • Medfly is a wonderful rescue! I am delighted to see your place, in the photos and want to welcome you to the forum.

That place is Karen and Chuck's home with the kennels on the same property.

  • But they are Medfly rescue yes?

  • @sharronhurlbut:

But they are Medfly rescue yes?

Yes, but they (MedFly) are not on the Forum

  • @sharronhurlbut:

But they are Medfly rescue yes?

Yes, Karen and Chuck run Medfly.

  • He's gorgeous! I don't have one, but tris are my favorite!

  • What a handsome pair you two are! He really is a nice looking tri. Wow, what a set up Karen has, that is just amazing. Big congratulations on your new Buddy!

  • Congrats on your new arrival! Buddy looks so sweet. ;) I especially love his full face mask. It makes him unique (I think) because he doesn't have the white stripe running thru to the top of his head. You two look so happy together.

How wonderful to have people in the world like Karen and Chuck of Medfly. I'll look them up and send a donation.

  • They could really use donations as the vet bills are really high with the issues they have to deal with. The food bill for that many dogs is enormous too. All donations are tax deductible.

I am so sorry about your brother. Yes, seems he was meant to be with your family. If you get a chance, record his vocalizations. We really love pictures and videos!

@styvez: He does Bark, but tends to make a whole lot of other noises instead, i've read up on Basenji's but never seen or heard one so i dont know what kind of noises they make. Does he sound anything like this? http://s11.photobucket.com/user/eeeefarm/media/Basenji/MOV01074.mp4.html

There are now DNA tests available that can pinpoint what your dog might be genetically. Some companies can only do 30 or so breeds but most advertise well over 150. Why should you care - well it is a way to know what sorts of things healthwise you should be on the lookout for as many breeds have unique health issues. I was at the vet last year and there was a puggle there with an eye issue - the owners shared what it was and it is common in beagles. They then went on to say that they had trouble with the other eye before and it was an issues specific (although not exclusive) to pugs. So much for hybrid vigor. Darling picture though - good luck
