Moses Loves Paper

Basenji Talk
  • My Basenji Moses loves paper. All paper - he wants to tear it to shreds. Toilet paper, magazines, newspaper, papertowel you name it and he will attack it and play with it until it is ripped to shreds? I don't want to crush his spirit but what can I do. I try to keep things picked up but he is very resourceful?

    Any advice?

  • Funny you wrote that, I just came home to a tan/ white cloud…our napkin cabinet door was open, so I guess Otis took it upon himself to pull the napkins out and tear them up.
Silly me for not having a lock on that cabinet..
    I wish I have advice but I don't.

Other the picking it up…. "live with it".... that is a total Basenji thing

  • Keep a nice rake handy so it's easy to clean up! Our first basenji loved to shred newspaper, so we let him. We came home from work every day to a mess, but it was easy to clean up and kept him amused, and a brief sweep-up was a small price to pay for an otherwise non-destructive dog. Pick your battles, you won't win them all so don't waste effort on the 'small stuff'.

  • Nemo grew out of it…mostly...so there might be hope in 3-4 years down the road. :D He only shreds used Kleenex(tm) now. My puppy Zoni shreds newspaper into long wide strands similar to a paper shredder. Not sure how she does this.... Toliet paper hasn't been on the roll since I got her. I'm hoping if she doesn't know what it is, she won't know it is shreddable. :D:D

  • Collect unwanted and old phonebooks and a shopvac?!?

  • I keep a box of shredded paper in the corner for Gossy to throw around (easier to clean up than TP and tissue) and a box of unshredded newspapers for her to bury bones.
Initially the boxes of paper were for recycling purposes (I weed out the bones on recycyling day) but they suit her purposes as well.

That looks familiar! Cody also LOVES paper towels. We use them as napkins during dinner and if he gets one he prances around the house as if to say "SCORE"! He looks proudest when he has a contraband paper towel in his mouth! He also likes the occasional toilet paper, but really, Bounty paper towels are IT for him!

GenJMar, I am glad they realized their mistake in running out while iot rained..;) The gate is locked and secure now they are stuck on the inside. It is very hard for me to get Otis to come inside when I am about to run errands or just leave to go get my daughter from school..he loves to be outside, even if it is cold and he is shivering. So I bribe him with treats and in he comes, but the minute the door closes behind him he goes nuts, trying to get back out..Silly boy.

@Shaye's: If your baby yodels for you, your husband and your son, don't feel bad, they know who does all the work. At least Zoe yodels. My little girl has never yodeled, and on five occasions now in the past month, has barked - barked like a dog, each time when something made her nervous/scared. So depressing. I had a thread on here a couple of months back about how zoe at about 4 months had never yodeled. Someone told me to try and encourage her by egging her on. I did this until I was hoarse but I finally got her to yodel. Now she seems to be doing it more and more. We dont have a fence yet so when we are outside I keep zoe tied. When my husband gets home he stays just out of her reach until she gets so frustrated she yodels then we praise her and get all excited with her. Same with kitchen boundary. She isnt allowed so we stand in the kitchen untils she yodels (This is my problem they say I give up to quick lol) If we baroo she will usually yodels faster. My son came home today and again she ran to the kitchen door and yodeled for him right away didnt need to baroo at her once. BTW zoe also will let out what almost sounds like a bark when she is startled. Sounds alot like when you get the air knocked out of you. Or her baroo got cut short. She did it three times when kids came behind her on boards and startled her one after the other 1 burf sound for each.

@wizard: I forgot to mention that my previous basenji loved to eat rabbits that he caught and muskrats. (I did my best to get those away from him) Oh. ew. We have found one or two squirrel carcasses in the yard over time, but I'm not sure who's killing them. Gypsy has in her youth, but I'm not sure she has the eyesight or speed for that anymore, so it's probably one of the Basenjis. Grosses me out! I know they'd both like to make lunch out of my cats.
