UK Breeders

  • I am hoping to get a Basenji puppy in the future and am doing a bit of research now.
Can anyone recommend Breeders in the UK. My last Basenji boy was a rescue Dog so i dont know much about Breeders. Thank you,
    Shelley

  • Have you done any online searching? Try starting here, The Basenji Club of Great Britain

You also might want to contact Sally Wallis, Zande Basenjis…. I am sure she will assist you in finding responsible breeders (not sure if Sally herself is planning any litters in the near future)

You can visit her and Marv's website at www.zandebasenjis.com

  • The best thing to do is to go along to a show. Most of the basenji breeders over here do seem to show their dogs, so you can get an idea of what you like and chat to people. Get yourself on a waiting list now, expect to be interrogated (a good breeder should want to know as much about you as you do about them!!) and just wait and see :)

I was very lucky with Maya that i got in touch with her breeder days before the pups were born and was fortunate enough that they allowed me to have one. But its best to get on the list early :)

  • I agree with Maya. There is Blackpool show on 27th June and Hound Show at Stafford on 1st August. Also NBS have their Champ show on 12th July. Come along and chat to people there most of whom are breeders.

  • thank you to everyone for the advise. I have looked online and like the sound of Zande Basenjis.
It sounds a good idea to go to a show.

  • Hello Benkura,
can you tell me the best day to visit the Blackpool show, i have never been to a Dog show before. Also what is NBS please,
    Shelley

  • Hi Sheley.

Sorry should have been more specific. Blackpool day for Basenjis is Saturday 27th June at Westby near Blackpool. NBS is Northern Basenji Society. You can find out more details at www.northernbasenji.org.uk The championship show is held at My Pet Stop, Tingley West Yorkshire on Sunday 12th July.

If you need any more help or info just ask. :)

  • Thanks for the info, i will see if my cousin will come with me to Westby on the saturday. Had a look at your web page and see you have a Dog called Benji, he looks quite stocky and reminds me of pictures of the first Basenjis,
    Shelley

  • Hi Shelley

Benji is my first B. He is 7 now. I don't show him any more but he is coming to Blackpool so you can meet him there. My website is very new and still very basic but keep a look out as new things will appear on it soon.

Looking forward to meeting you at Blackpool.

    Vicki

  • Thanks Vicki

It would be great if you add your health testing results to your site….

I have just sent off for the Fanconi testing kit for 2 of my dogs. They've not arrived yet but when I get the results they will be added to the site. The other 2 dogs will be tested when I can afford it.

The website is in a very infant state - I'm learning as I go along. I plan to add pages about my dogs with pics and a guestbook etc. Keep checking for new items. :)

That's great…. always good to have the Fanconi test done, especially if the sire and dam were not.... good luck on your results. And you site looks really nice so far.

Thanks for the responses, glad I wasn't the only one feeling 'paranoid' about it.

@debbi: For the record, BRAT does not do Fanconi marker testing because we can not afford it. If we tested each basenji that came into rescue each year, it would cost over $30,000 per year. Our adoption fees do not begin to cover our direct vetting expenses as it is. This is the primary reason BRAT does not test. In addition, the test is not 100% accurate. debbi j. @debbi: I don't see this as BRAT bashing. I am involved in the making of BRAT policy, and I know that is not the main reason. You may have heard this from individual BRAT members, but the opinion of individual members does not stand for the organization. debbi j. So are you saying BRAT doesn't do it because of finances but would let it be done if funds? Or are you saying it doesn't do it because of finances but also wouldn't allow it even if they had funds due to the "labeling." I don't care if it is a MAIN reason, I care if BRAT would prohibit a rescuer testing dogs they foster or if people raised money to help BRAT test rescues.

@TwinPeaks: Hello Brianne, There are no breeders closer to Edmonton than Shamaron Basenjis. I would like you to know that over 14 years I have had 3 basenjis from Shamaron basenjis. All the dogs turned out to have fabulous temperments and lovely confirmation. With just a bit of research, the sire of the litter they have on their website shows that the sire or dam is not tested and comes from a Fanconi line on the bottom side through Changa Gala Celebration, with not only Fanconi but PRA eye problems in his offspring. Now, I can't say anything about the Dam of the litter, as I don't find the pedigree on Sally's pedigree site, but this kennel has produced a Fanconi Affected in Shamaron's Kofi Utundu and they have breed to lines with much known Fanconi.

Good reading, very important for people buying a pup to know they have a responsible breeder.
