New Basenji in our Family Tonight!

  • So, tonight is the night I go and pick up our "baby" Basenji. He's 16 weeks old on the 6th of May. I'm very excited to get him home, and experience all the "fun" firsthand.

  • Congrats on your new addition to the family. He is a handsome boy.

  • Congrats… have fun with your new boy... I would suggest if not already done that you make sure to DNA test him for Fanconi and a possible follow up with a Board Certified Ophth Vet.

I have been told that he is free and clear from Fanconi.

  • @dorvaan:

I have been told that he is free and clear from Fanconi.

Since OFA site (www.offa.org) is a public site and all test results for Fanconi are public, it is always good to check for yourself. You should be able to find his sire or dam on that list.

  • Please verify for yourself that both parents have test results in the OFA database and that at least 1 parent has tested Probably Clear. There are less than honest breeders who are telling people that the pups they are selling a from tested parents or are "free of fanconi" when in fact they have not done the DNA test.

Search either the registered name of the parents or their registration numbers.

  • Wonderful and congrats!

  • Congratulations on your new canine baby

  • So, now that I've been suckered in, level with me. How bad is it? I mean, really….

You just need to check for yourself and see that at least one parent has been tested clear, for your own peace of mind…. it is good to check for yourself.

And if this was the puppy on puppyfind.com with the eye problems, you really should have him checked by a board certified Ophth, again for your own peace of mind. Obviously I have not seen the pup other then the pictures, but judging by the description of the problem of PPM on the ad, sounds like excessive PPM and while it is quite true that this should not bother him, it is always good to have it checked and make sure. PPM is in our breed, however what we typically find is one or two strands of PPM, which in itself is not a problem. But excessive PPM usually means they were born with one or both eyes blue when they opened. As the pup grows, the amount of PPM stays the same, so typically by the time they are an adult you really don't even see it and again, usually doesn't cause problems.. if it were me, I would want to make sure that there are no other underlying problems with the eyes. And this type (excessive) PPM is not common in the breed, it does happen but breeders will "cull" those breeding dogs and not use them again, usually

  • Your new baby will be the LOVE of your life!
Last week ,Me being the New MOMMY that i am, gave jonny b. more of a new dog food in one day than i should: long story short, he wasnt eating what i thought was enough, so i got him some science diet puppy food to put in with his diamond food that he has been eating. i thought a little of the puppy food would put some good stuff in him. well i guess it was too much and too rich, and during the night (he sleeps with our 10 yr. old son) he had DIARRHEA all OVER my sons room. you want to talk about a MESS AND STINK, but you know it is love when you dont even get upset (and i wasnt upset with jonny, just me for being an idiot and making HIM feel bad). i wish now i would had taken a picture of the disaster.
needless to say, i cut way back on the puppy food (by the way he LOVES it).
    i bought a steam rug /carpet cleaner.
    i learned a good lesson.
and i love my dog. :)

  • Congrats on the baby boy!!!

    Welcome to the forum!!

  • Cute baby! Congrats :)

Teach him soon as you can not to be a Velcro dog! My little girl, also 4 months, has severe separation anxiety, and it's quite a chore to teach them it's okay if they aren't with you 24/7 - we're working on it, but so far, a really really slow process! Of course your new baby will not be like that probably - and except for it, we love everything about our puppy, even the mischievous bouncing and grin that precedes trying to tear our house (and our cat) up! Worth every minute. You will have a wonderful time.

  • How are you getting on with your new little boy, he's gorgeous.

  • Hey,

Where in WI are you? I'm in the Green Bay area. Seems like a lot more WI people on the board recently.

  • Welcome and where in Wi are you. I am near Madison.

Welcome and where in Wi are you. I am near Madison.

I'm actually about 45 miles to the west of Madison.

The new puppy is a hand full. Housetraining is going to be incredibly stressful, I can tell that already….

Welcome aboard, but do share his registered name ? Who are Dad and Mom and what was his date of birth so we can be sure to add him to the Basenji pedigree on-line database (with a photo ???) for the world to share him. http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/

Most people incorrectly use the terms dominant and dominance with regard to dogs. Here is a good blog post by Dr. Sophia Yin on the topic. http://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/dominance_in_dogs_is_not_a_personality_trait

Or it would be more expensive through him because he'd need to mark up for his - or his staff's - time to coordinate. Makes sense - smart to just do it on your own. Both our pups were rescues, but in Bongo's case he was from a shelter so we have no info at all on his pedigree and we were able to register for the test. They don't always operate really quickly, though. Congrats on your beautiful girl! Enjoy!
