A bit of bragging about the boys

Basenji Talk
  • Since we had the Basenji meeting with Janneke (and mirtillo) and Walter (from Bendji) Buana has changed… :)

He is three years old now, he never was friendly to other dogs.
He growled and even snapped when the other dog was growling back.

Since we had the meeting, he seems changed in suc a nice way!
Buana hasn't growled at one dog, we let him on a loose leash and he will go to the dog, smell a bit and even sometimes play! (all that on the leash!)

Last week, I walked the dogs with my mom, my mom had Chafuko and I had Hailey (she was at the end of her period) and Buana, there came a dog (black lab, competely male) on a short leash and I thought... oooo no...
Was to late to keep Buana away, he smelled and both were so calm and easy and after a few minuts we walked on... I was so proud on my boy...

I think he made more than 10 friends now.. and the nicest thing : he can walk off the leash!!! Together with Chafuko!!!!
When there are no cars in the area, we let them run free. When they walk too far, we call "wait a second" and they will stay still untill we say " freeeee"

Also Chafuko is back as normal again, when Hailey was in her period, he was not nice to other dogs...
I'm happy he is as sweet as always... :D

They're both sooooo sweet.. I love them!!!!

And Hailey, she act like shes a very angry dog to other dogs... but when they stay coming closer, she's going to stay behind us hahahahahahaha

  • That is wonderful that Buana is friendly now. He just needed to see that other dogs are PLAYMATES, not enemies! Congratulations!

  • Good news - and I'm sure you're happy too.

Sorry, but I believe that dogs' health should come first. I understand the dilemma that it puts shelters and rescue agencies in, but in general I believe if you can't handle having intact dogs don't get them. Full stop. The more research that is done the more clear it is that we hurt dogs by neutering them. Yes it is annoying to keep a bitch safe once or twice a year when it is in heat, but if you aren't willing to do that why would you get it? Nor should his health suffer because you chose to get a bitch and seem unsure of your ability to keep them separated. I really wish people asked this question before adding an intact dog to their family. The next question is whether you are willing to keep them apart and want help with ideas on how to make it as peceful as possible. Having lived with a male dog that howled the entire time we had a bitch in heat, I can only say that it isn't Fun but it is doable. You can do this!

Andrew, Would this be Dr. Tracy Leonard? If so, I co-own a B with her. I believe the next OKIGO lure trial is being held in Columbus in September. Usually Dr. Tracy attends these. You can go to the website and check for this trial. Jennifer

Just got home and had a GREAT TIME!!! Both litters were out for me to play with and they were adorable beyond belief and full of curiosity… looks like the red and white girl is going to be exported but I know that my second B next year will be a red and white, so I will live. Good news is that one of the two black and white boys took a real liking to me, wanting to be in my lap and being loved by me...even gave me lots of kisses, and the great thing is that he had a great medium level energy and the temperment I wanted! He will be 6 weeks on Tuesday so I am hoping his personality stays the same....and since it was obvious he liked me to the breeder maybe he will be my baby...There were also the two brindles that I like as well, o hell- I want them all (LOL). Sorry guys, I was too busy playing and talking that I didn't take any pictures but I go back in two weeks to see them again, I think that visit will be when I will find out who is mine, so pics then and then another couple weeks and he/she will be home with me!!!! WHOO HOO, such a great day Oh, p.s.- I was correct, the little red and white girl has the BIGGEST personality, she was the last to konk out from playing and jumped into the pigpile of sleeping puppies to bite them and tell them she wasn't tired! But she has the face of an angel so she can get away with it

Are we playing "Where's AJ"? Is it Kansas City? Glad you and your fella are reunited. I know I've missed my boy when i've had to kennel him and can't pick him up 'til the next day 'cause they are closed. So hard to know he's right there and not be able to see him.

Don't feel bad about getting bit…she probably was sorry as soon as she realized what happened. Darting movements can garner such a reaction from any animal (and some humans) when they aren't used to contact. Chasing a Basenji, even when you really need them to come to you (sometimes especially when you need them to come) quickly becomes a game and they will play tirelessly. You could try a training exercise wherein you have really good cookies in your hand and call her just to give her a cookie. It won't take long for her to come to her name if she associates it with something good. Don't give up.
