Is my dog a basenji?

  • I am pretty sure Layla is at least part (or mostly) a Basenji. She happens to be 35 lbs though, longer than what we have seen and also her tail doesn't curl, but we think it may have been broken or cut off before we got her( she had been attacked by 3 pitt bulls) cause its short (she doesn't know so don't tell her, she thinks its long and pretty and we agree). All the other traits fit to a T though…so I am gonna attach pics, tell me what ya'll think! Oh she also has one blue eye..so i dunno

  • She certianly have the markings I would say at least partly a basenji.

  • She is a pretty girl and I also think she looks like she has a lot of basenji in her.

    Pat

  • Definitely part (a large part) Basenji. Maybe a bit of boxer too?

  • can't see the tail on either one…

    that would help alot.

  • She is lovely…can you get a photo of her standing up and sideways shot?

  • Well, I tried to get a picture with her tail in it, but she wouldn't quit wagging it, she is intigued by all things electronic, but also a bit apprehensive about them, so the camera is something she isn't so sure about yet, lemme know what you think

Also, thanks for all your responses!

  • I really figured that she is mostly Basenji, it's her mannerisms, the way she looks, from all the looking up I have done, it's just kinda off that her tail doesn't curl and is so short (about 4 inches)and that she weighs in at around 35, has anyone ever heard of a Basenji that big…if not I am pretty sure that she must be slightly mixed, it's just that there is no telling with what else since all other signs point Basenji, at first I thought maybe a bit boxer because of her color, but then I found other Basenji's that are her color too.

  • oh the poor girl how lucky she is to be with you now. Thanks for her.

  • She is indeed lucky to have you as new owners.

  • She looks like she may have some Basenji in her, certainly is a pretty girl!:D

  • She has Basenji markings, and her body is shaped like one - the ears look like it too - but whatever she is, she's a pretty girl and lucky to have a forever home.

  • Main things to look for, white feet, white tip on the tail. wrinkled forehead (their always wondering what they can get into next) I believe those things don't change regardless of color. In any case you are lucky she picked you.

There are lots of breeds with white feet and tail tip….. and wrinkles.... same with tail curl...

    But she is very cute

Really? What ones? I don't know of any that have all the criteria? I've done extensive research on the breeds, and i'm curious I don't recall any.

  • To me it looks like part boston terrier. They have those markings, short tail..

I think Pat means lots of dogs have one or more of these traits. Those three things all together MAY be an indication that the dog does have some basenji in it…but not for sure. Because the dog could be a boxer/husky mix...and end up with right color/markings, pointy ears, a curly tail, and have wrinkle on the forehead (lots of dogs have wrinkles around the face). Rat terriers are notorious for looking like Basenjis...but the shape of their head is slightly different, and the breed was founded using some Basenji way back.

Another thing to remember is that after several generations of mixing, all dogs tend to go back to a natural or pariah dog shape...squarish, brown, pointy ears, slightly curled tail...that is just the natural phenotype of "dog"...so a dog might end up looking Basenji-ish even if there is no actual Basenji there.

I am not refering specifically to the OP...that dog does look like it might have some Basenji in it..or Rat terrier...but it is REALLY hard to say for sure. It doesn't matter really, because everyone is welcome here...Basenji, mix, B-look alike...welcome...

I used Wisdom Panel for my assumed Basenji mix. It showed no basenji at all. My boy is 32 lbs and short hair. His DNA says he is 25% American Eskimo 12.5% Boston Terrier 12.5% Chow Chow 12.5% German Shepherd 12.5% Miniature Schnauzer 25% Breed Group-Sporting, Herding, Hound, Terrier. Having owned basenjis all my life I would say my boy has basenji in him by his personality and behavior regardless of what his dna says!!

Thank you all for your kind words! It almost brings me to tears of joy right now to see her laying in the grass by the pool on a beautiful sunny day in California and knowing that shes gonna be OK. Of course I wish I could have done more for more dogs in her village (I DID help bring 2 of her puppies to the US though, they have arrived safely in Colorado today!) Segbwema, I know what you mean about the dogs having to fend for themselves… The village where I lived for 8 months didn't have any running water or electricity... so it definitely put things in perspective! Right now Laliti and I are BOTH feeling like we've won the lottery : ) Patty, yeah I hope Laliti doesnt take the word "mutt" the wrong way : ) I think I'd pin her to look a lot like a Basenji/Black lab mix.... (obviously shes not mixed with any lab, but just for the sake of describing her appearance) because she has a diluted Basenji appearance with a larger body and a thicker coat like a black lab....

What a pretty girl! Her head/ears/face & wrinkles are Basenji-looking while her coloring & build suggest some Malanois blood–that would account for her size & aloofness, too. Our local SPCA does genetic testing as a fund-raising thing, if you're really curious you could try something like that...

Becca and Tucker are certainly more adventurous than Spencer. He wants no part of water– coming from the sky or puddled on the ground. When we're walking, he will screech to a halt in front of a puddle, like he's waiting for it to move. Becca and Tucker sound like fun dogs to have around. I saw their pix in another thread, and they are so cute-- bet there's never a dull moment at your house!
