Wellness canned food not agreeable… anyone else have a B w/a sensitive stomach?

Basenji Feeding
  • I read the ingredients on the Wellness canned wet food and they sounded very simple. I thought this would be a good mix-in with Bella's dry food, but her sensitive stomach didn't agree with me (and I only used 1/3 of a can)!:( As of yet there is only one wet food that agrees with her and it is NOT one I really want to give her all the time (it's one of the "lesser" brands). Oh how I wish I had a dog with an "Iron Stomach." Does anyone else out there have a B with a super sensitive tummy???

  • Since you don't use much as a mixer…. I would go with what already works.

  • I went through months of trial and error with Ziggy's diet. He does have a sensitive digestive system and, though he will eat ANYthing, he is susceptible to diarrhea at the drop of a hat. We finally figured out that he does great on Steve's Raw Food.

  • Awesome news. My dogs are on the raw diet as well, not Steve's though, I am making all of it, with some additions. They are thriving. I hope Ziggy will stay well on it.

  • I mix in Steve's raw, Primal Raw http://www.primalpetfoods.com/ ,and 2 tsp Canned pumpkin. I also give 1 cap of probiotics (Ark Naturals Gentle Digest) and 1/4 tsp 2x daily Solid Gold Seameal.

  • You may want to see if a product like Prozyme or Fresh Digest which has enzymes to help with digestion helps with Bella's stomach issues.

  • Or you might want to try some probiotics..my vet recommended non dairy ones. I got a pack of 30 packets with powder you just sprinkle on top of their food, from the vet, I believe it is "the Hills" brand..

  • we are still fighting diarehhea too. YUCKKKKKKK! i use 1 tsp pumpkin a day. and i have one on anxiety meds. he HATES his crate. but it really seems to be helping. the other one is PETRIFIED of noises: guns from hunters in the VERY distance, fireworks, etc. He did not even want to walk tonite(july 2). he gets pumpkin with a does of imodium. but the powder might help? where do you get it?

  • You can get Fresh Digest at Petco. Prozyme you can order from Drs Foster and Smith online. Both are probiotics. The size sold at Petco is about 100 servings.

@Baxterandbailey – my 12yo male just went through something very similar and he too had diarrhea issues with the rimadyl. He actually had better relief from prednisone than the rimadyl/tramadol combo. He had a sensitive tummy too and does well on Wellness Senior. Also for his stiffness and arthritis, (this may sound crazy) I use a dog-sized dose of horse vitamins my mom uses for her Arabian mares. I just mix it in his food and he loves it. It's called For-a-Flex Joint Support. It is pricey, but it'll last a long time for a dog vs a horse lol.

I emailed the person listed in the original post to find out if she wrote the first warning. She did write it- here is her reply: But after eating the food…the 6 dogs here got sick, and two died within a week of each other. Different ages and breeds. After putting it out on the internet...3 more dogs have eaten the food and died. Many just got sick. So use your judgement. But the only thing in common seems to be Kirkland Lamb and rice with exp. 2013. We are waiting to hear results on testing...but that takes time. In the meantime...this food has been sold in Nov-Dec. 2011 and is on the shelves in our homes. So to save other lives...I would warn everyone you know that feeds it.

I have been giving Sahara Blue Buffalo for months now and she loves it. She is picky about what she likes to eat, I use the dry in the blue bag, and mixed alittle wet with it. Read those labels on the cans, lots of veggies, and antioxidants for good health. I have tried many foods and she eats this the best. While I was reading the labels a lady and her husband bought one of those huge bags and I asked about the food. They told me they had lost one of their dogs to cancer and now with a new dog they only buy Blue Buffalo. If you try a new food the girl there told me to start out with only a small amount mixed into their regular food. You then over a few days mix more and more until you end up with only the new food. I do this and Sahara hardly has any bowel problems. She had never been a big eater, she weighs 22pds. and the vet told me today that her coat was beautiful and she weighs exactly what she should for a Basenji. I was happy she is healthy and sassy!!!!! Good Luck with finding a food you like.:D

I have recently been switching my guys from Nutro sensitive stomach to Eagle Pack Holistic Select Chicken Meal & Rice Formula due to digestion problems. So far so good.
