New Basenji Puppy

  • Hello everyone - it was wonderful to find your forum online. My name is Susan and my husband and I just became the owners of a little Basenji female, named Shaye. She is 3 months today, and we are discovering she is a very different dog from others we've had in the past and known. I'm attaching, if I can figure out how, a picture of her when we first got her at 10 weeks. We are happy to be able to say she sleeps in a dog bed next to my bed all night and has had no accidents, she will mostly go to the door to be taken out for potty, and my two older cats have not scratched the daylights out of her yet, because she is learning to keep her distance. She does not walk well on her leash, and she messes every time we put her in the crate because we have to do something, which isn't often - would love to know if those issues solve themselves with time?

  • Aaah.. she's a cutie! Welcome to you and Shaye! (beautiful name!)
There is a lot of info on this forum, enjoy!!

  • Congrats on your puppy, who did you get her from if you don't mind sharing?

  • Hello & welcome from Canada. Pretty little girl you have there

  • Welcome to the forum, your pup is so sweet!!!

  • Awwwww . . .

  • Welcome to the forum!

  • Thanks for the welcome! I got my Basenji at a cut rate price because the mother had papers, but the father was given to the owners of the mother when he left to go overseas in the military, and he hadn't kept papers. I saw both parents though, and they were beautiful animals, well mannered, and the same colors as Shaye. So, she is not papered, but, we got her as a pet, and she is surely true to the breed, so that was fine with us. I am hoping once she is older, to find someplace in Florida to get her involved in lure coursing - it looks like a lot of fun for them.

  • Were the parents tested for Fanconi Syndrome using the DNA Marker test? If so was one of the parents Probably Clear? If not, please get your puppy tested by registering with the Canine Project, http://www.caninephenome.org/ and ordering a kit from OFA, https://secure.offa.org/cart.html

  • Please make sure YOUR b is tested.
The above site will help you.
It will tell you what you need to know about the health of your pup.

Oops, sorry, I meant to add welcome to the forum first!

  • Thanks for your concern regarding getting Shaye tested - she has her second visit with our vet on Thursday, and I will be sure to bring the subject up with him and see that she is tested using the DNA Marker Test you refer to. I had read on another site that this is a problem Basenjis have, so it's good to find out for sure. ;)

  • Many vets are not aware of the test so unless they have other basenji clients that have provided them with the information, they may not know about it. The test kit is a something that you can do at home, you just need to order it from the OFA website and fill out the registration form at the Canine Phenome Project so you can print out a test request form.

This is not something that your Vet does, it is a cheek swab that you do and send in. You order it from OFA, register your B on the CPP site (registration is free) and send in the cheek swab.
Many Vets are not even aware of the DNA test for Fanconi and many Vets are not even familar with Fanconi

  • Thank you for that information - I will go to the site and see about getting that test kit.

  • Evidently I cannot register in the Phenome project they ask for the registration numbers, and Shaye is not registered with AKC or anyplace - guess we are second class citizens. So I will hope for her health, and see if my vet can get anywhere with the request for tests - the site for the test kit also asks for registration numbers, kennel, etc.

  • That is okay, you can put Not Registered for that part of the form and they will assign her a NOREG number.

  • Hi Susan, what part of Florida do you live in? We are in the Tampa Bay area, and have a lot of basenji folks around here. shaye is very pretty!

Welcome to the Forum, you will find lots of good info.

  • Welcome to the pack :) I look forward to seeing more photos of your baby!

  • Welcome to this great "Basenji-encyclopedia" ! Greetz from Belgium !;)

If you go to the OFA site (www.offa.org) and then put in the breed as Basenjis and the Fanconi for the test, you can see all that have been done, we are up to 2473 DNA tests and many are for non-registered Basenjis that have come from rescue or that don't have AKC registrations. Many people on this list have had their B's tested and are in the same situation you are.

Everyone meet Klassic's Trixie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We drove the 3.5 hours from Pittsburgh to pick up Trixie from Sue (Klassic Basenji's in Marion, OH). It was a very long day with 7 hours of driving to and from, but the ride home was much better than the ride there, except for the part where Trixie peed on my friend that went with me to pick her up! Trixie seems to be adjusting well so far, we are about 50/50 with going potty outside. Trying to learn her body language as to when she needs to go out! She is a stubborn thing on the leash and that will need much work as well! So happy to have her here! She loves our kitty Pinkie, and our miniature pinscher, Zombie. Zombie is more interested in stealing the puppies belonging's and claiming them for her own. I welcome you also. Puppies are so adorable. Just remember a quiet Basenji is not necessarily a good thing. After all these years I still forget that one.

He's a hungry dog today. Gave him 1/2 cup in the morning and just a few minutes ago. He had no problem eating. I'm much more happy that he's eating now. He likes his bone as well. Not too much into the Kong yet. I just wish he didn't cry in his crate when I put him in there. Feel bad for him but I know it just takes adjusting. He is perfectly fine when I return home after he's been in there awhile. It's just the initial time. To be honest though, this transition went far better than I expected. I was prepared for the worst. This little guy has done very well.
