Are ALL Fanconi results on OFA?

  • When dogs are tested for Fanconi, are the results ALWAYS available on OFA? Or is there some reason why the results may not be displayed, even though a dog was tested?

  • Yes, they are always posted on OFA. Sometimes it takes a while to update the site. And also sometimes there is human error in the data entry area. But they are "supposed" to be there. lol If it doesn't show up after a while you can always contact them and they will get it sorted out. My results have always been up immediately after getting the email notification, like within a day or so.

  • I have a question too about it, all the parents of our boys are tested Clear, thats also on the site, will our boys be shown also clear, or does everyone have to look at their parents results?

  • @Buana:

There is no "clear" by parentage. While Clear to Clear should produce clear, the only way to have your boys on there is to have them tested. And if you are thinking about breeding then it is good to do. Also, it is great for the breed to have as many tested and published as possible.

  • Like Pat said, even if both parents are clear, OFA will not consider the offspring to be clear. With the current test, the accuracy is not high enough for them to safely allow you to assume that. When the full direct gene test comes out in the future, you will be allowed to officially consider a clear to clear breeding as clear offspring too. However, even still, OFA will not include that info on the offsprings' pages. You still have to do your own research on the parents (or further back) and come to your own conclusions. The only way for any test results to ever show up on your dogs' pages in OFA for any disease, even if certain, is to have the test done on that individual dog too. Even if parents already prove what the offspring will be.

This is especially important if you have a dog from a pet store, backyard breeder, or other less-than-reputable person. There are quite a few cases of the dog not really coming from who the pedigree says it's from and not having the parents it looks like it has. You still want to test each dog to make sure what you see is what you get!

  • Thanks,

Both come from one very good breeder in Holland, his whole kennel is tested clear.
We're going to test our Brindle one for hd and some more health tests (Buana is already tested before) and we will discuss it woth our vet.

He is very interested in Basenji's and knows a lot about Fanconi.

@LiveWWSD: Yea, she has quite a bit of African in her Dam's bloodline. Her mother and most of her siblings all test indetermint. I was totally prepaired for the indetermint result, as that seems to be the standard test result for alot of her breeders bloodline. To date none of the Avongara Dogs have had Fanconi and only when crossed with American (include really worldwide Basenjis) has Fanconi cropped up. However there has been ISPID, hips, eye problems with the Avongara imports. Remember that in Africa, there is nature selective breeding for the most part and also remember that you need the gene from both side for Fanconi as it is recessive. If nature selection, could be that if affected they would have died before reproducing.

@YodelDogs: Was this litter bred before or after the DNA test was made available? Before. Pups from that litter are now adult dogs.
