I am ready to get rid of my Basenji

Behavioral Issues
  • lady disaster… an update please? I'm dying to know what happened to your pup and the household!

  • Even though this is coming late maybe it can help somebody so just thought I'd mention that we had trouble keeping Manning in a wire crate. He could unlock the bottom lock and squeeze through the crate door by pushing it open with his body. We ended up having to literally lock him in the crate with a lock when we left. Instead of a real lock we usually used the metal part of the leash that you attach to the collar. I was afraid that he would get hung and hurt himself otherwise. I hate to say it but I actually jailed Manning lock and key.

  • Ah the things we do to keep our kids safe. No worries Achandl2… we locked Rocky in the cage with the double snaps we'd use for the horse buckets to keep our daughter out of the kennel and give Rocky some peace. grin

    It's all good.

  • Update????

  • no more posts….wondering.....my B drove me to tears at times but I'm so thankful I kept him cause he is my baby and now waiting for #2

  • Where did you get your basenji from?
Have you tried to take your b to some gentle basic obedience?
Our breed is very smart..tho you might not think so, they like to stay busy and will "make" work for themselves if your not helping them get rid of the energy they have.

  • I don't by any means want u to take this the wrong way But maybe the Basenji breed is just not for u and ur lifestyle my sister has a akita mix and a husky but she can't take more then 10mins with my B she goes crazy and doesn't understand how we deal with them Some people are just not basenji people it's not a bad thing but maybe u would be better off with a "easier" dog that isn't as stuborn . she sounds like she is having alot of issues that will require some serious patients but if u do decide to "rehome' her please make sure u contact BRAT.

  • I don't think this person is still on the Forum?… at least there has not been any posts in over what, a month?

She hasn't posted since Nov 2006 so I would venture to guess she gave up on the dog.

  • jeez I didn't look at the date when I asked for an update…hope all is good with the dog.

@crazybasenjimom “in the past 2 years my Belle has gotten into fights with the boys, and caused vet bills” Taking her for a blood panel is more feasible and cheaper than continuing vet bills from the fights. If her thyroid is low, the meds are inexpensive and she needs them. There are also other medical problems that can lead to aggression. Vet bills are always feasible, it is part of the responsibility of owning dogs, so I don’t understand why you would say it is not feasible. If you mean you don’t have the money, try talking to the vet and setting up a payment plan.

Congratulations on the future new addition. Boy/girl is a good combination. As others have advised let them meet on neutral ground and take them for a long walk together. For every good interaction praise both inordinately. As Curlytails says don't rush it. Keep us posted, please and best wishes to you all.

My previous males never had an opportunity to meet other basenjis (outside their breeder kennel) so don't know if the experience with my current female is "typical" or not. The first time she encountered another, it was a tri-color older female that was a real bitch and instantly got aggressive (now whenever they see each other its "hackles up"). The first time I took her to a lure coursing event, mine was friendly enough until a little blind female came up and bit her. The second time I took her to a LGRA event, a lady came up behind us (while mine was trying to potty) with her tricolor female and her dog attacked mine. So now hackles go up any time another female comes within shouting distance.

We've had barely a dusting here but its been cold enough to keep it on the grass. Mr. Annoyance is acting like its "rutting season". In, out, in, out. If I don't jump up to let him out he proceeds to pull at the blanket over my feet, or worse yet, bills/mail on the coffee table (much like teachers, bill collectors won't believe "the dog ate my check"). It's kinda fun though 'cause he's also just more playful in general right now. A couple more weeks and he'll probably hate the cold and snow like every other self respecting Basenji is supposed to….:D Silly Basenjis...don't they know their rep???:)

I agree with Catherine, socialization is a must, but it depends on the personality of the individual dog. When we had 4, they all slept on the bed together and ran together and rarely did we have any problems. We added a puppy and things were still going ok, just really crowded. However, one day our youngest girl decided she was all grown up and didn't want to be bossed around anymore by our 'wanna-be' alpha. Neither of them was a true alpha. We managed to defuse the situation, but a month later it happened again. The girls could never be together again. In fact, the tri developed a predjudice against all red girls after that! Both girls were terrific with people and with Basenji males and even with males and females of other breeds. I had 2 intact males, brothers, who stayed together with absolutely no problem for almost 4 years until one went to another home. They even got along during season. Terry
