Chasing birds

Basenji Talk

  • Sunday we had an extremely mild and sunny day (in the 40s F). I was in the yard talking to the neighbor when I noticed Gossip was jumping around in the snow in a really strange way. Then I realized she was chasing the bird shadows! :D :D

  • They love to run, even if its after shadows.
    Glad you had a nice day.

  • Funny!! Nala goes for the birds, but I guess it's never sunny enough to see their shadows! I'd love to see video of that!

  • Bird shadows:) That's a first for me. Don't you just love it when they find a new game??

    BTW, birds are great fun to Katie. Watching and scaring up flocks from the feeders are her 2nd funnest thing to do in the yard. (Of course, squirrels & cats are the number 1 priority when it comes to guarding the yard.) I never realized how soft their mouths could be until Kate brought a live sparrow into the house….{then let it loose:(; catching a bird is hard enough. With the 'help' of 2 B's, almost impossible!! FYI, 'nervous' bird poop' is much harder to clean up than normal bird poop:D}

    Here's hoping Gossip continues to chase just the shadows.

  • birds also, we have shrubs next to the house and my B, Sahara, does a daily check on the birds that have a nest in the middle of the tall shrub. They go back and forth during the day and Sahara goes off behind the shrub, it is cute to see her hunt like she is in the wild. Then there is my cat, that lives in my next door neighbors yard, she won't come home b/c Sahara is here. I have underground fencing and the cat sits very close to the borderline to tease Sahara and she runs up and down between the yard watching that cat do it's thing. We have lots of birds in the trees here and you can find Sahara in the front or backyard bird watching. I can say, "Sahara where's the birds", and she will look up in the sky for birds. She is so smart and knows lots of vocabulary, no kidding!!!!!

  • Gossip goes for anything that moves, including leaves blowing across the ground.
    I thought it was hilarious though that she even went after the shadows.

    That is funny. My B does the same thing. Anything that moves he'll want to chase it.

    I've got some large windows in my condo and he'll see birds up in the sky every now and then and go nuts.

  • I've caught her watching the lights from planes flying overhead at night - I wonder if she's thinking about giving chase :)

    Absolutely wizard, birds, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, I've even known a few to take on possums and raccoons. Egads! Tough little buggers, aren't they?

    YES!! C3 does the same thing…I always feel guilty that maybe he's got more energy to burn so he chases his tail. If I'm REALLY feeling guilty I'll take him out for a quick run around the yard or a walk around the block :)

    As a Falconer I can tell you that most BOP's will not hunt game( your dog) that they have not had succcess with before. Most Raptors are opportunists aand like a sure thing, with no chance of them getting hurt while subdueing prey. The exceptions are if the bird is starving(middle of winter), or young and stupid. This time of year I don't think either would apply. They do take interest in moving furry objects however. I would never leave a puppy(s) unattended where there are Raptors around…....
