What breed makes a good match with the basenji?

  • I have two basenji's 5 yr old male r/w and 4 yr old tri girl. My elkhound passed away in August and I am thinking of getting a elkie pup. A male because I doubt my girl will tolerate another girl she is alpha . My male is so laid back and very accepting . Since they lived with a elkie I thought they might do well with a pup not an adult. I had hopes that perhaps they might be as nice to a baby as they were to my old elkie before he died. My husband has had basenji's for 35 years and I have had elkies for about the same time. Marriage ten years ago brought those breeds together I miss my furry friend and would like to get another but things are so good with the two of them right now I am afraid of screwing up a really good thing. They get along so good together I am wondering if adding a third might be the wrong thing to do. I worry it might stress everyone including us. We don't have dog fights and I don't want to start now. Pups should be born late spring and could come home early summer Any thoughts on wether I should proceed? They got along nicely with the elkie for the 5 years they lived with him. They were pups when they joined the familyand he was nine

  • @MacPack:

I had never heard of the Cirneco, so looked them up. Very nice looking little dog, looks like a small Pharoah hound, to my inexperienced eye. Might make a lovely partner for a basenji.

Exactly… but the key to them is they are "real" diggers...gggg

  • Our Piglet is a Lab X B mix. Have you thought of anything like that? She is the best of both. B enough to be quirky & lab enough to be chilled out. Just a thought, we rescued her. She brings a smile to us every day with her silly antics! She's about 32 pounds all muscle.

  • You are probably not into shar pei because they are so different?
But they are wonderful, just like Basenjis they are very clean, cat like and easy to housebreak, quiet and independent.

  • We had a retired greyhound with our b for 5 years. They were most excellent running/racing companions when they were outside in the yard.
But i do I think another b is the best companion, because they have so many unusual traits that only another b "gets". And, it is so much fun for humans to watch two Basenjis together…

  • I think it is a personal preference for you, honestly. Your B will learn to acclimate to whatever dog you bring in the house. (Our B fell madly in love with my MIL miniature longhaired doxen.) Just remember your basic doggie intro tactics and go from there. Good luck and let us know what you decided on!

  • what about the Manchester terrier?

  • I just emailed a breeder of Podengo Portugues Medio (wire coat)! 😃
We hope it is possible to take a look at her dogs! She doens't live too far from us.

But.. I also just got some pics of a very pretty black/white b-pup from Tillo's breeder.. sigh.. 😉

Tillo has a very sweet shar pei girl friend. I do wonder: don't they have a lot of skin problems? I do like them..

  • Just like any other breed, shar pei have breed specific issues, skin really wouldn't be my major worry! If you'll purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder with healthy lines and keep it on natural food+ supplements you certainly can avoid a lot of problems! I don't want to go into specifics on this board but can e-mail you a few links and there's also awesome shar pei forum with knowledgeable folks who can guide newbies.

    what about the Manchester terrier?

They look nice! Especially with erected ears!

  • If you have ever experienced the noise of the Pharaoh, mulitply it bey 1000% when thinking about a Cirneco. GLUG. Cute yes, horrid little monsters though.

    RRs…. fabulous wonderful dogs.

  • We actually have a little bit of everything - a basenji (the second one coming from the breeder in couple of weeks), a one-year-old akita (the basenji and the akita are inseparable), and a 4-month-old boxer. They are just one big happy pack!

And they dig, dig, dig… and dig more...gggg (Cirneco's).... or so I am told by people that own them.... There are a couple in our area that have been to Lure Trials.... but they are very cute

  • You are totally on the wrong site, wu396lai614…

Yeah.. we don't like handbags.. We like B's 😉 😃

  • Hi, we have just got our first Basenji, Milo, who is sharing the house with two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They have got on really well even though Milo is a very active puppy. Both our Ridgebacks, Luke and Kris are so laid back they really just allow Milo to do whatever… We chose the Basenji as they are African hounds and it's nice to keep them from the same continent. I think Basenjis and Ridgebacks are ideal companions. Fab!

  • I of course would recommend the Podengo - the medium or bigger one (I prefer the big smooth which is of course why I have them 🙂 )

Hanna the Podengo and Sarge the Basenji enjoy each other a lot - rip and tear and run and jump etc etc etc. (except for now when she is in season and with the boy I imported.)
