Why Charcoal flavored biscuits???

Basenji Feeding
  • So now I check all of Bella's food for everything… By products, corn, wheat gluten, and make sure it is USA made... I can't give her peanut butter biscuits, and cut waayyyyy back on chicken jerky. I am reading ingredients on EVERYTHING!!! The other day I was looking for new biscuits and was reading on the Old Mother Hubbard mixed flavor biscuit package that there are charcoal flavored ones. Why would you want CHARCOAL in dog biscuits??? Does anyone have any input on this?

If I remember right this had something to do with digestion… if true or not... I don't know as I never tried or looked into it....

  • charcoal is used as a filter; and it is used as an additive in ground meat so that it is then "unfit" for humans (although i don't guess it would hurt if a human ate some). And you have to realize that those "flavors" are for human appeal (although who wants charcoal flavored things escapes me). After all, if the dogs had their say, the most popular flavor would be kitty poop.

  • LOL agilebasenji ain't that the truth Kitty poop and bird poop for mine Yuck

  • agile & phoenix…too funny...and for mine, any kind of poop would be their favourite flavor!

  • The charcoal is activated charcoal (the kind used in filters) not the kind used in cooking grills. It helps with digestion and I think (not sure) in teeth cleaning.

  • My 2 b's love Mother Hubbard. They do well with these treats, and I have a boy with food allergies.
I think the charcoal helps with their tummys.

  • I appreciate the input… I can't imagine charcoal being scrumptious, but you never know. Like some of you said, cat poop flavor would be a hit... so why not charcoal? I ended up getting bacon and cheese flavor this time, but I will try the mixed next time. The ingredients sounded healthy and wholesome! She seems to like the bacon and cheese quite well.

  • I give mine the Mother Hubbard Charcoal treats also… they are black and don't look very appetizing, but I guess they are supposed to help with dental health.

Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy. Here is an FDA warning "Paws Off Xylitol": https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs

Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

I had a somewhat similar experience. Joey had a seizure which I correlate to taking Simparica. He looked terrible so took him to the vet when the first seizure happened and he was late Stage 2. Put him on Royal Canin kidney kibble and Hills kidney wet food and 4 years later he has only had 1 more seizure and his kidney values have remained constant. I will believe your homemade version is most likely better if you have the correct proportions. All the best to your Bs! Joey will be 15 in November.

8 mos old is still on Royal Canine medium size puppy as recommended by vet. Very interested in how you change up their food. Glad to hear that because I would like to change him from chicken based to something else as adult. Had always been advised not to keep changing food as it was hard on their system. Breeder advised to use high protein and fat dog food (60% protein, 30% fat). What is your opinion on this? I am starting to add 1/2 tsp coconut oil daily to dog food for winter feeding. Advised it had ingredients similar to mother's milk. What say you about this?

@lvoss: I have been ordering direct from Cloud Star for about 9 months now. I use the buddies for training treats both the soft buddies and the itty bitty buddies work well, both break up easily. I have had no problem with them going bad. Since you are ordering direct from the company they haven't sat on a shelf in a store. Generally, the expiration dates on the boxes I get are about a year after my purchase and I go through them pretty quickly with 4 dogs. That is good to know
