Another new member here

Hey all. I'm the proud owner of a 7 year old female basenji. I got her completely on impulse from a store in a mall, having no idea what I was getting myself into.
After doing research on her, based on her… Odd behavior, I found out that I didn't have a dog quite like my other two dogs. (Golden and German Shepard)
I read all about clicker training, crating and their eating habits and decided I didn't wanna fool with any of that. I worked hard at training her like any of my other dogs. It was a tough road, but I've ended up with one cool pup.
She's great around people and whenever we have parties, she's always the hit. She ends up in SOMEONE's lap and generally stays there until they get up.

Welcome! What are their names? Your B does what my two do - try to fit the other dogs head in its mouth. Except with a Basenji and a Golden, it really is an exercise in futility!!! Also looks like your B thinks the German Shepherd is its fluffy bed. They are a lovely bunch.

The basenji was crated for a while, as was the german shepard. Kitiara is the Basenji's name. (My fiance has posted here before as well)
Kitiara HATED being in the crate, and would bang and bang and bang and poop and pee in it, and just freaked. One day while I was cleaning her crate, I put her in with the german shepard, Usha. She didn't bang.
From that moment on, she was crated with Usha. They became hardcore best friends. None of the dogs are crated now ,but even still , Kitiara follows usha around and sleeps nuzzled up to her. I have a picture somewhere of Kitiara actually sleeping BETWEEN usha's back legs.

yeah, Keoki does that to Jazz too. Dh says he's like a snake, always trying to swallow Jazz's head whole! He never plays rough like that with Gypsy {our old golden}; it's like he knows she's not up to it.

I would probably NEVER get another one. I love mine to death but training her was 10x harder than the other dogs. Even still, we have to be very VERY careful around the house not to leave things out, or leave doors open, or leave food on the table, etc. She will get into as MUCH trouble as she possibly can!
If nothing else, she's been great training for having kids one day :)

:D But thats a typicall Basenji… hard to train and get in as much trouble as hey can :cool:

I can't imagine a home without a basenji!
They have such a great sense of humor….and they know how to use it on you.
Trouble, yes, they can cause trouble...but they also make me laugh.
Such a neat breed for those of us who are a bit off center...laugh -
I actually LIKE that we can't leave stuff lying about the house! It is a huge help in keeping the house clean. My basenjis trained my kids to not leave their crap all over the place better than I ever did!
I also don't think training has been any more difficult – I had a dobie about 20 yrs ago who was more challenging in many ways, LOL -- but it is different. You just have to take a different approach, that's all.
