Puppy soft stools

  • My puppy, Glory, has had soft stools since she moved in. Her stools are not real runny more like soft serve. I've had three tests and nothing significant has turned up. She is very active, sweet, smart, eats well, sleeps well, but still has soft stools. Should I be worried?

  • What are you feeding her? And how long has she been there?

  • She has been with me for 6 weeks. She just turned 3 months old. I have been feeding her Fromm's Puppy Chow which the rescue team gave me. This is what they had been feeding her for the 2-3 weeks she had been with them.

  • Do you know if she had loose stools with the rescue group? Could just be the way she reacts to that food.

  • Yes she did have loose stools at the rescue group. She was also very underweight. My vet also thinks the food could be a major part of the problem. We've been trying to switch her to another food which my vet uses but Glory doesn't like it too well so she's not eating as much. Then I get concerned about her weight - although two weeks ago she weighed 15.2 lbs which is over an 8 pound weight gain since she came to us on Nov. 17th. Glory did O.K. with the food switch until we reached the 50% point of change then she wasn't so eager to try the new food. I must admit I'm used to Corgis who really never look underweight so having a puppy who is naturally lean is new. My vet suggested really enforcing the 15-20 minute eating limit and Glory will begin eating the new food and hopefully will improve her stools.

  • Yes, I agree with your Vet (and I do the same)… 15-20 minute rule.... You might try a meat based only food (Evo for example)

  • One of my kids, Ziggy, had loose stools and diarrhea for about six months after I brought him home. And I tried everything. Finally figured out that

    • he should not eat chicken in any form
    • he does much better on a raw food diet (the stool is very firm, as almost all of the food is being absorbed)

One vet decried the raw diet, but you can't argue with success. It works great, and he has been diarrhea-free for many months now.

  • We had diarrhea problems with Lola as a puppy…. problems as in puddles of poop, huge messes, etc. After a couple of weeks of off & on & cooking chicken & rice a couple times a week, we researched foods on the forum & picked a new one. We've never had a problem since. You may want to research the food you are currently feeding & consider a change.

  • And watch the ingredients don't have corn… especially not in the top half of the list! Corn is a filler and not comfortable on the dogs tummy.:(

  • Glory has been with me almost two months - she is a little over 3 months old. I have switched her from a puppy food that was high in beef which she was eating when she came to us to a food that has chicken and vegetables. The soft stool doesn't bother her - there is never a sense of urgency to go - she only has a soft stool about twice maybe three times a day. She has gained almost 9 pounds since she came to us - she was very underweight and very young. Right now she weighs just under 16 pounds. We're doing stool testing every 2 weeks and except for the very first test, they are coming back O.K. I'm concerned that she may not be processing the nutrition from her food or that she will have chemical imbalances because of the loose stools. Am I worrying for nothing?

@senjisilly I've got one for 'emergency' usage, but it's not the best fit. I'll try to pick a better one this weekend. And yes, his paws are cold, of course. I try to get him warm when I'm back inside, but still.

Pat.. you know I saw your post and thought HUH? Then reread and saw I TOTALLY missed the itching sentence. No, I'm not tired! :) Agree with Pat, could be fleas, could be other things. I'd flea comb the base and see if you find flea dirt, fleas, scabs etc. If the coat in general is good, and you find nothing combing and bathing doesn't help, rubbing a little anti-itch med into the base and distracting til it dries might help.

I certainly have to be more careful in selecting his treats because I dont think they mix well when given for variety.. I have tried the Instinct treat bones which are venison and those are "iffy", then I use soft baked treats for training. But on any given day its normal for him to get a treat based with venison, another cheddar cheese and liver ( I cant imagine that to help a lot but he gets bored with only one treat and that leads to motivational issues) Thanks for the info :)

My Basenji had this problem on and off for years before I finally found a good solution. I actually just posted about it elsewhere in here so I'm going to attempt to quote it in here. Let's hope it works lol. @mandi2doors: Copper, my oldest, has always had a sensitive stomach and would get diarrhea out of the blue all the time, so badly that he would have blood dripping from his rear. It freaked me out the first few times it happened! The vet always tried to prescribe an antibiotic but it never helped. The way I always got rid of it was to cook a pound of ground beef (rinsed), mix with a cup of cooked white rice, a cup of cottage cheese, and a cup of plain yogurt. You feed it for about 3-4 days (I always gave him about a cup and a half a day) and then start introducing their dry food back in. A friend on another forum gave me this concoction years ago and it worked perfectly for years. Almost two years ago he got diarrhea and any time I would stop feeding the mixture it would come back. I finally consulted a holistic vet and she said I could continue feeding the mixture but needed to add some veggies to it for fiber, or I could change his dry food. She said to avoid chicken, wheat, soy, and corn. She also recommended feeding a probiotic/prebiotic several times a week in addition to two other supplements, Gastriplex and Moducare (both by Thorne). He's been on Taste of the Wild now, which is grain free (I buy the fish variety but they also have a bison/venison as well as a lamb), and and has had no problems. I'm very careful about the ingredients in the treats I give him now and have had NO diarrhea problems since changing his diet, which is absolutely wonderful! Here are the links for what I use: http://tinyurl.com/27jaroe http://tinyurl.com/2adwtqn- 1 capsule 2x per day http://tinyurl.com/276rn24 - 1 capsule 1x per day http://tinyurl.com/2g47lsp - 1 capsule about 3x per week (I give it on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) Good luck!!

@Kananga: Why is it when dogs feel better they feel the need to be more mischievous than usual? First really glad they found out what is wrong. For the above, when we got Cara she was a little sick. Once she felt better all hell broke loose. My daughter said "Can't we make her sick again?" LOL.

how big is the lump? it could be as simple as a pore clogged with oil. it can feel like a cyst and by massaging it you can get it to head over time. Or try a warm wash cloth. Shot reactions, like they said, are on the shoulder blades. Caesar has a reaction to a shot and his shoulder blew up to a softball size. The vet tech that gave a shot didnt insert it in the correct manner and it dissolved with time and a Benadryl shot. Does your pup react when you touch it like it might hurt? What size is it? When Cairo was being neutered the vet pulled two teeth (canine and molar) that were not completely out or pushed out by the new teeth. They didnt charge me that much because he was already asleep. This is a great time for them to inspect and fix anything. They charged me $50 for pulling a baby canine that didnt come out and a molar that was on its way out.
