  • Your in for some exciting times…do keep us updated with photos, once your b comes home.

  • How about the almighty Ra or Ramses both names of might and power suitable for a handsome lad:D

  • Or Anubis the god with a dog´s head.

  • I hate to be the person to rain on the parade but neither of the parents have any health testing. Looking at the pedigree there is most definitely Fanconi risk with Akuaba's Tornado, a known Fanconi Affected, on both sides of the pedigree. I also recommend looking at Sally's database.

  • If I were you I would think twice… the sire of that litter is line bred 3 times to a Fanconi affected dog (Ch Akuaba's Tornado)... and not DNA tested... the bitch is also from that same dog, again not Fanconi DNA either... you are really taking a chance on a pup from a sire and dam that are not health tested. I hate to say it, but you are really playing with fire... and Tornado, call name Nate, has produced lots of Fanconi... along with the fact that he was affected and die from it....
Check out the sire and dam on OFA site (www.offa.org))… there is no health testing

  • I have to say I'm surprised that this wasn't a red flag in your research. Especially with our harping on it here…..

  • The glucose test is just strip testing and only tells whether the dog is symptomatic right now. The parents should have been tested via the marker test prior to breeding. Since this is the second time the parents have been bred since the release of the DNA Marker test in July 2007, this should have been done over a year ago.

  • Oh, you really do need to rethink this, and do more homework.
I had a basenji boy with fanconis and I can tell you, for my family, it was a hard thing indeed.

  • I totally understand. Urgggg…This is getting so frustrating! I just spoke to my mom and she is pretty upset that Sharon (her friend) didn't know Joy hasn't Fanconi tested until now. I thought for sure I had an honest person, I guess some people can really make themselves up... Id love for any advice on some know and respected Breeders you might know of. We are looking for a Domestic Red and White for a Family Pet. Unless they live withing a few hours of Eastern Connecticut, we need someone willing to ship. I know it is late in the year for deposits, and we are likely not to get a litter at this point, but I hope we still have a chance...Please if you have any recommendations we are all ears! Thanks!

  • Pat and Lisa can privately give you the word on breeders who test and are respected.
I sure would listen to them.
Take your time, basenji ownership is for life.
And for a beloved pet, you want one who will be with you for a LONG time.

  • Sorry, who is pat and lisa, lol…

  • A starting point would be the BCOA Breeder Directory.

If the breeder has a website check out if they have the parents listed and check for yourself on the OFA website that they have been tested.

I know some breeders have some older puppies still available. This has been posted before but they have two boys listed and health info on the parents so here it is again,

  • @Capt_Jack_our_Basenji:

    http://www.topdogbasenjis.com/index.html

Anyone know anything about this Family? Thanks

I think it is a MAJOR red flag to see on a website that "Puppies can be Fanconi Tested for $100 extra to the puppy owner" The test only costs $65 so this means that they are charging an extra $35 that is going into their pocket on top of the price of the puppy.

  • Wow! Okay Thank You!

  • What about Eldorado Basenjis?

  • I got my precious Sahara from a pet store, big mistake. I found out through testing her this summer that she is probably affected. I have to start testing now, and I hate it that I have to be on the lookout for this dreaded disease. With how you lost Capt. Jack, to love a new B and possibly loose it to Fanconi, I would definitely be looking for tested sire and dame puppies. We love this Basenji so much that I was depressed for wks. after finding out she was affected. :(

  • Wow, where do I start? That website you posted raised soo many red flags, including what Lisa said about probably making money off puppy buyers paying them to do the testing. That's an aweful lot of litters to be well cared for and socialized. It bothers me that their site is set up more like a virtual shopping mall with instant payment, rather than a nice get to know the dogs and breeder type thing. Remember this is a huge relationship that you're getting into when purchasing your dog, or at least it should be. There doesn't appear to be any screening to make sure the home is right for each puppy, you just pick a color, put in your cc, and click a button to get your puppy! The fact that they are AKC inspected means they are breeding at least 3 litters a year. And they are associated with other registries that are designed mostly for byb and puppy mill dogs. If you look, they also breed bloodhounds and coonhounds.

And OUCH, look at that poor puppy held up by it's tail! They don't seem to know anything about handling Basenjis. That is the last thing that I would ever grab! lol Thank goodness they at least test for fanconi now! But probably not much else.

As others said, look at the BCOA directory and contact other breeders. I'm sure you will be able to find a puppy still. Some good breeders have already been recommended. I also know a couple folks personally who still have puppies available. Linda is in Michigan and hopefully has a bitch in whelp. I know she is willing to ship and should have wonderful babies. They should all be reds. http://www.worrywortkennels.com/page/Basenji-Litters.aspx Gale is in Georgia and has been a well respected breeder for a long time. I know she had a large litter a few weeks ago and was planning on another too. She and Susan are working together on the litters. They would definitely be able to work out transportation. http://undercoverbasenjis.com/

My sister is also a nurse. She used to organize flu clinics, and one thing that was mandated was that there was a loaded syringe of epinephrine handy. I hear you about the cost of office visits! My horse vet will come to the farm and wrestle with 3 horses floating teeth, give a couple of shots to each, and the bill is less than my Basenji's routine office visit!!! Ridiculous!

When we say responsible for the dogs forever - we do really mean forever. I have animals returned to me when they were 9 years old because of significant family issues or death of the owner - I currently have a 12 year old and a 7 year old that now live with me. Think about what that means - because even those of us who are prepared for that - really are never prepared for the impact on our families houses and other dogs. You say you want to keep 2 - be advised that the everyone hanging out together in basenji world is NOT the norm. Most can have 1 male and 1 female - if you are planning on keeping 2 - you may have a problem - not right away but eventually you are likely to do so. I am not sure that I remember who or where Chaos came from but fanconi testing and eye testing for PRA would be critical as well as thyroid screening. What titles does she have - is she a fast as the wind Field CH or Obedience or rally or conformation CH. That would allow you to have evidence that she has characteristics that are valuable to the breed as a whole and quite frankly if all you want are a couple more basenjis - there are many many out there that could use a forever home. In any event - think about it - it's not as easy as you think - if you are going to do it right - and finding good homes is also not as easy as you think. You may not have the experience in weeding out puppy mills who might want your pups and living where you do - you are in the midst of some that do produce basenjis.

I would suggest waiting until you get the little guy. Indi didn't have a name for abut 2 days. We had all these names in mind and none of them fit. Thats my two cents anyway (oh ya and because we did that I have a cool costume for him on haloween but I don't think I am going to get any cooperation on his end)

My husband was afraid that Cooper was "my" dog at first, but things really evened out after we went through training as a family. Now, Cooper is attached to me during the day (when I have days off), and glues himself to Geoff after dinner every night. He still walks and rides in the car better with me, though. And I'm the only one who can brush his teeth!

The individual pics are great and they are not on this site anywhere, just group shots of the same pups. Lady's and Isabelle's. They are just the cutest little things. I've picked the one I want :D Unfortunately there just isn't anymore room in the inn. Ashley
