Pumpkin crazy

Basenji Talk

  • I spent the bulk of my afternoon today baking and pureeing the pumpkins from my garden. Took hours as there were quite a few of them.

At first all three dogs were hovering, hoping for some fresh baked pumpkin.
But Jazz… she was there all the day long. Any time I had a few minutes to go sit down, she would hurry between me on the couch and the kitchen, doing her little spinny-begging thing. Any time I stood up, she would ruuuuun to stand in front of the oven and look hopefully at me. :D ALL day this went on.

They got quite a bit of fresh pumpkin today - I hope it doesn't have an adverse effect tonight. :o

The sugar pumpkins I grew I've pureed and will freeze for pies and breads for the humans, but I did grow a few of the larger {less flavorful} jack-o-lantern pumpkins and I'll puree those up to use in dog food.

My house smells sooo good right now!

  • Oh how great it is to have the home smells of harvest. I too was amazed at my two furkids appetite for raw pumpkin, straight from the jack-o-lantern scrapings. Must be somthing good in them. Thanks for sharing your day. :) :)

  • Kiora loves fresh pumpkin! She usually only gets it twice a year on Halloween and Thanksgiving. It's a special treat for her. Miss Ananda thinks she is insane and would like to let it be known that she prefers to eat turkey on Thanksgiving. ;) I think it usually goes over o.k with their tummies since it is high in fiber. Kiora's stomach is made of steel, though. Once she ate an entire bar of 70% cacao chocolate and was not even a little sick, though I was sick with worry for about a day and a half.

I think Booger will love a new friend…When I got Chike as a puppy the breeder felt very strongly about having two b's. She believed in opposite sex and an age difference. I deferred to her judjement and she found an older rescued bitch that was supposed to be very friendly. They got along fine for a few days and then for some reason the older bitch went after chike, cut him up really bad and broke his lower jaw. She went back to the breeder and Chike spent several days in the hospital. While that is an awful start, once he was well my vet kept his eyes open for a possible addition and we eventually found Brandi. She was about 3 at the time, had been turned in to the pound after her owner died, and was amazingly sweet and kind to Chike who first thought she was a new chew toy. They have been best friends ever since and Chike simply will not abide doing anything or being anywhere without Brandi. The only time he has torn up things he was not supposed to was when i once took Brandi to the groomer without him. I came home to torn up pillows and such and as soon as we came home he looked at me and peed right in front of me....I learned not to seperate them again.... And as for picking things up....Brandi barked and barked when we brought her home and within a few months she had totally stopped barking. Now she may bark at a squirrel, but she has become basically barkless. Good luck!!

My Sahara loves Pumpkin Cake, so I have no doubt that she would love the pie. At least Pumpkin is good for them, and that it was not chocolate. I had a piece of Pumpkin Cake from a church fellowship dinner and Sahara spied me eating it so of course she jumped up in my lap. Being the easy one in the house, I had to give her a taste. She loved it and ate more, she likes alot of things that I eat. But I will not give her anything that I think will bother her stomach and definitely not chocolate.

Hi Quercus! Tano's breeder was Maripat Webber of Etukon. I believe both her siblings went on to be show dogs. Tano took after her mom as far as coloring…being the only red and white of the litter. ^_^ I'll push up Tano's appointment for her physical and request the full thyroid thing. If this is all related to thyroid I definitely want to get it looked into asap! Thank you for pointing out that it could all be related! She really develops a thick woolly undercoat in the fall/winter. You'd think the house wasn't near 70 degrees all winter! If her hair was a little longer I could possibly clean it up and felt with it--she sheds that much! :D
