Sprained leg

    The other day (Thursday) I came home from work and instead of spryly greeting me at the door EL D was slowly making his way from the bedroom. He was favoring his rear leg so I guessed he fell out of bed and landed wrong (he rolls around so much he has on occasion fallen off). I stupidly took him for his daily walk (he was after all only favoring it not limping) but later that evening he was clearly limping (nothing broken or swollen). The vet told me (over the phone) to give him aspirin and put warmth on. Last night he woke up a couple of times crying a little. He doesn't cry when I stroke his leg and he occasionally will put some weight on it but he clearly doesn't feel his best (he eats well but doesn't want to walk anywhere). I know sprains and pulled muscles can take time to heal but my heart sure cries. Any other suggestions to help him feel better would be appreciated.

    Phoenix did the same thing a couple weeks ago Sprained/pulled a muscle I called my vet the other day and she said to rotate ice and heat 15 mins 2x a day and just try and keep him from stretching it alot . Phoenix isn't whining or anything just limping but i know how u feel . It hurts to see him being like that and knowing ya really can't do much about it . :( I hope he feels better soon !!

    Update on EL D - much more serious than a mere sprain. The leg got worse (serious limping) over the weekend and EL D got more and more lethargic to the point Sunday of being nearly unresponsive. I got him in to my vet today and after several hours and several tests (my vet is very thorough) and xrays, the diagnosis came back that EL D has blastomycosis, an uncommon fungal disease that invades the lungs. Tomorrow I and my vet will be contacting the university vet school for a confirming diagnosis and medication. The prognosis is poor but not rock bottom. Please keep EL D in your prayers.

    Oh no, how frightening! Many good thoughts and prayers headed your way. Poor little guy, lucky you have such a thorough vet. Hoping El D will be OK, keep us posted please.

    El D, bud, get better. (but tell mom you need home cooking and the prime real estate on the bed! it'll make you feel better.)

    Fungal infections are tough! Is it just me or does it seem like there are a lot of basenjis on this board with strange medical issues?

    Yes, I was just thinking the same thing - we have way too many sick basenjis the last couple of weeks. Good thoughts for all the pups and their pets.

    Has a complete set of blood work been done? Electrolytes may be off. Ionized calcium (which is not often checked) may be out of range. Tick diseases may lead to neural issues. Previous ‘old’ damage or minor defects of the vertebrae, discs or spinal cord may become more significant with age. A good chiropractor or, as previously mentioned, acupuncturist may be able to help. If you feel that it really is not due to aging, a visit with a neurologist might help.

    @zande My last two B’s didn’t even need to go to the vets to be whining, even pulling up at a strange place is enough for them to presume it’s the vets lol. But others have said they actually enjoy, relax and enjoy it.

    My old girl Ella had a shattered rear leg from being hit by a car. My options were amputation or surgery. I opted for surgery. She did have a plate inserted but that was because she had bone pieces removed and the plate was there to connect what was left of her leg bones. We had casts, lots of casts. The vet told me to keep her quiet, not let her roam around, absolutely no stairs, and to wear an e-collar if not well supervised. Ella did not listen to the vet. I blocked the stairs with a baby gate but she managed to jump it while wearing the cast which went all the way up her leg. She perforated her e-collars to where I could use them as colanders. I also had to find a high calorie food (not high protein but high calorie) because the veterinary surgeon said she would need twice the caloric intake in order to heal quickly. I ended up hand feeding her a mix of kibble and canned food. She healed fast and well. Ella ended up with a slightly shorter rear leg but she could still run like the wind. She lived 11 more years and died at age 14.5. I have seen photos of the halo type device on one of the Facebook groups, "Basenji".     Yes, the test for Lyme disease is a blood test. It is a special test that is not in the regular panels– they usually run it separately, after they rule out other things. I hope your B is better! Did you find out what was wrong?

    We do use a flea product on them, but not Advantixs and we have used the same product for years. Although every batch could be a little different, and who knows how regulated those products are. I did look at the possible side effects listed on the package, but of course not enough information is provided. Thanks for the advice.

    Just looking at her pedigree, I really would urge you to have her DNA tested for Fanconi especially if you consider breeding her. There is lots of Fanconi, both Carriers and producers of Affecteds in the pedigree from years past before we had a DNA test.
