Pooping behavior

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • We've only had our 2 B's about 3 months now & find they usually go about 3-4 hrs after their meal. Quite regular, although there have been times when they have had to go in-between. We were told that we may have some 'accidents' in the house, this had been known to happen, but have not had any at all

  • Medjai used to go once in the morning and once in the afternoon, but now as he is eating half his breakfast, and saving the rest for lunch, he goes three times a day. He doesn't really need to though, and will sometimes skip either lunch or dinner poop. I just have to know when he has to go, and when he doesn't, or I'll spend a couple hours walking him trying to get him to go to the bathroom, as we start to freeze. I've gotten good at figuring out within 20-30 minutes, on a normal to cold day, but when it's really cold, he will either go right away, or he doesn't have to.

  • Ty poops once a day, but if it's raining, not at all until I walk him and force him to go outside. Katie poops 1-2 times a day. 2 is usual, 1 makes me keep an even closer eye on her, but so far so good. No problems.

I believe part of pooping is based upon how well the food is used/digested in the dogs. When I cut out the high protein, higher fat, food with a lot of filler, I got less poop, and fewer needs to poop.

IMHO as a pet owner, I think monitoring food/water intake and daily output of your dog (urine and fecal) are essential. Paying attention to the little things can thwart larger problems in the future.

Sorry Wizard, I went beyond your request. I know you know all this $#!t (pun intended), but I rode on your coat tails to remind other pet owners how important monitoring daily habits of our B's can be.

Best wishes to you and Luny.

  • Yes, watching the dogs poo for color changes and consistancy can give you an idea of your dogs internal health.

  • I noticed that when we take them on long walks, 3 or more miles, they poop 3 or 4 times. The first couple of time solid and the other two are runny. Maybe too much excitement?

  • I'm glad to know diversity is fine - and yes I have noticed the type of food makes a difference too - that makes sense. It's just been a learning curve to have a dog that is sooo different than my previous ones.

  • I have to say I laughed at that first post ("taboo") because I think we have talked rather candidly about our dogs' bowel movements on here. It's funny. Remember the hair poo thread? And I know we have had some posts about all kinds of colors coming out of our B's when they've eaten something they weren't supposed to.

Mine go twice a day….Zip is known to poo twice while at the park because she knows we'll be there awhile and there's no use pretending she doesn't have to go and holding it....She does that at home in the back yard when it's cold out and she wants back in.

  • I find it interesting that the poll includes a spot for ' once every couple days '. If that's as much as your dog goes, he either isn't eating at all, or in in need of medical attention immediately.

  • Chance was able to hold it for a day and still eat his meals when it's really rainy outside and he just will not go. Lately he has to go at least once even if it's nasty outside.

  • Luny has done that once or twice (normally he's a once-a-day dog) when the temperature was really cold (below 0) here and he refused to go outside (except to pee next to the door).

@2baroos “Know it alls like you have ruined these forums. Your opinion is not the only one. I for one am done with people like you who think you are the expert on everything. Those poles must be uncomfortable” Absolutely correct. She thinks it is “her” forum. It is not.

You aren’t walking him far enough. He will go if you extend your walk. Also keep a treat in your pocket to reward him after he goes.

@Pepper said in Elderly Basenji Odd Behavior: The absolutely hardest thing with each of my Basenjis was going through their final week(s) of life. ((hugs)) That's true with all my dogs. I used to say no matter how old, it was still hard. But we lost a 9 mo old Samoyed last December. I'm still crying. No logic.. he didn't know if he lived a long or short life, he just knew he was utterly loved every single day of his life. My heart dog... 6 1/2, lymphoma... had every odds going for her getting a long term remission. She crashed with each protocol and I put her down after 5 mos of her suffering from my desperation to save her. Knowing the end, of course I'd have just kept her comfortable and let her go. Not knowing, I don't know if I would do it different. I hope I would... I hope if it happens again and there isn't a good chance for a cure, I'll let them go. I don't judge anyone who makes a different call, but my heart tells me it was as much my distress at losing her that made me keep on than for her. So I hear you, really clear and with shared pain. I do hope that you aren't shutting off getting another dog. As terrible as losing them is the emptiness of not having one share your life. It doesn't mend the heart, but it does expand it so the holes left are proportionally smaller.

@Tayda_Lenny: Well the dog park that we go to just made it against the rules to have unneutered dogs in the park. Sad, but I can understand… it is a very popular park and there have been a few incidents recently where some dogs have gotten hurt. Its obviously not ONLY cause they are unneutered, but I'm sure it doesn't help things. Lenny is not the main offender (but he is definitely not innocent either). I just sent his breeder an email saying that I really think that I should have him neutered at this point. We live in a really small apartment and its just not fair to have him cooped up in here without anywhere to run. He's leash aggressive and I normally don't walk them too much around my apartment.... we go to the dog park 4 times a week or so so they can run. He and Tayda have made a bunch of doggie friends at the park (and I've made some human ones) and I just don't think its fair to keep him intact for something that doesn't seem too likely to happen (her finding someone to show him out here that is close enough to me to not make it a HUGE inconvenience for everyone) at the expense of him having fun and socializing w/ other dogs and getting much needed exercise... I said we could arrange to have him collected if she wanted.... I hope she's not mad.... it's not how we planned it to be, but it is what it is..... sigh... My personal opinion, as a breeder is this… the happiness of the dog and the owner is the most important thing... if a breeder thought that the dog was that important to their breeding program... they should have kept them... period... when place... the most important thing is the home... not showing, not breeding, ot anything... but the home... I hope that all works out for you and you can get him neutered.... and enjoy him as a pet and family member.. again that is the most important thing!!! NO question... And in the end.. he is your dog.. you are the owner... it is really your choice to decide the best for you family/lifestyle... I hope that his breeder is one that sees this... and knows that he is in the best of homes... period!!!

Just a word about pyo….the ones that are the most deadly are called a 'closed pyometra'...meaning the infection is sealed in the uterus...nothing comes out..the dog just crashes. When their is fluid leaking you can catch it, and treat it. I think it is unlikely that Jazzy has a pyo, because her activity, and appetite are still relatively normal. A lot of bitches change a little during estrous...some get more crabby, some more clingy. Then when the added change of bringing in a boy, I would imagine she is just subdued :)
