So I caught a guy kicking Booger…

Basenji Talk
  • I understand your frustration and your need to protect your Basenji. I know I'd probably react the same way.

    Hope everything is ok…..

  • Hopefully, someone in your group has a camera phone and can keep it on this fellow if he ever comes back again.
You could take his photo if he acts up again and then the photo of his car and plate number, so you can call the cops.
I bet you won't see him again.

  • I'd just like the throw my two cents in… I've been out of the country for a week & haven't been able to be in touch with Andrew much. Andrew told me this story while I was trying to go through customs this afternoon, and my blood was boiling.
Although I wasn't there, I have no doubt had it been me instead of Andrew, the guy would probably have been much worse off. I probably would have punched him, and then called the police, risking arrest just to make his day worse. And I would have tried to get his dog with a rescue group... bringing a dog into a park on a leash & keeping it on a leash is such a bad idea!!! The dogs on leashes generally look so scared & helpless, because their owners haven't generally done enough research & training to convey that owner/dog trust so the dog knows he is 100% safe when with his owner. (Although if your dog is well socialized & knows he is safe with you & isn't intimidated by other dogs when on-leash I know it has its uses when training to heel, etc).
Anyway, I'm just venting & ranting now... I got very worked up. I'm glad I wasn't there! Booger is my first born, and I would do anything to keep him from harm.

  • My hubby would not have had to go that far cause if he would have kicked Abby she would have bit him. She doesn't like to be kicked by strangers, and she gets snippy when she gets hurt. My sister accidently stepped on her and I thought she was gonna kill her.

  • I just wanted to post and say one thing about this thread. There is no way in Hades I would have just stood by calling the police while someone mistreated a dog, any dog, let alone my own!! I'd have kicked that guy in the nuts so hard it would have taken him a WEEK to get back up. I would have been prepared to face the consequences of that too, because my dog's safety is worth it! Additionally, the law gives me the right to defend my family and property.

Instead of standing by and wringing my hands, waiting for someone else to "rescue me" I would have stepped up to the plate just like Andrew did! Taking into consideration that Andrew is a man, (and theoretically more physically matched to his dog's assailant) he could have done much more! He showed incredible restraint. I would not have been able to hold back as much as he did!

You did good Andrew, and you will have served as a deterrent to this idiot ever coming back to the park that your dogs and wife frequent. And hopefully this guy will think twice before he treats another animal (or human for that matter) in this way.

  • Andrew,
I'm infuriated just reading your story!! I would shake your hand if I could. I would not think twice about "pummeling" some idiot who kicked my dog! He got off easy. Way to go…..-Tim;)

  • Andrew ROCKS!

  • Andrew thanks you all for the support (this is Carrie). The unfortunate side effect is, I would rather my dogs and I avoid the park until this blows over… I don't know what this guy OR his dog look like. I always keep visual contact with my dogs, but they are often out of reach. I would hate to have this guy take out his frustration on Booger & me not be able to get to him in time. And if a guy is willing to do this to his dog, what's to stop him from hitting a woman?

When I heard this story on the phone in the airport, I was shaking. I just can't believe the nerve. We've had run ins with horrible dogs at the park before, and we pick up our dog & hold him out of harm's way & yell until the other owner restrains their dog.

And I am shocked Booger DIDN'T bite the guy honestly (and happy too). Booger DOES NOT like strangers touching him. He will tolerate it, but usually will grumble about it. However, kicking him & throwing him.... I'm amazed he didn't have much of a reaction at all. And very pleased because Lord knows Booger would be blamed & probably euthanized for protecting himself.

I think signalling is a great idea, although I have never used it. A friend taught her two Bichons to do it with a bell at the door. My dogs always let me know when they needed out. We had a regular routine, but if a potty break was needed at some other time, restless pacing and trotting toward the door was a pretty clear picture. Never a problem. Worst thing is the sound of a dog beginning to retch and jumping off the bed at 4 a.m. Seldom managed to get outside quick enough!

@BDawg: If anyone wants to train my sled dog to do this…!! :) Miles thinks he's pulling a team when we go for a walk!! That is amazing!! Makes me want to get a clicker. Maybe you should get one of these to have the "reel fun". [image: D_gg14_Memo_1.jpg] Regards, Esther

EWWWWW! Especially the being speared on the tooth part! Chey caught a pigeon in the yard once. I took them for their afternoon walk and when I went out to throw the poop out back I noticed feathers all over the yard. Silly me thought a cat or hawk had gotten the poor thing. I cleaned up the feathers and a foot, went inside and Chey wasn't around. I found her sitting on our bed with the remains, very proud of herself. It took me some coaxing to get it away from her and then I had to wash all the bedding…which I had just finished doing earlier in the day!

@nala121498: I love, love, LOVE your pictures in the gallery…the captions are hilarious too! What a cutie-pie he is...and I'll say it again...LOVE the name!!! Thank you so much! I stayed up late one night making a gallery to show him off. I know each & every one of us has "The best basenji ever", but mine really is! heehee. I never thought I could love a dog so much, and I'm glad I made that gallery since I'm out of town & its the only way I can "see" him right now :(

Have you heard of this stuff called "Goo Gone" I remember in middle school some girl did a presentation with it… she put chewed gum in her hair and rubbed it around and this goo gone stuff took it all out, like it was nothing. I'm not sure how friendly it is for pets... hopefully it says on the bottle. I've used it to get stains out of clothes a gazillion times! You can pick it up at the local hardware stores, or even in grocery stores. I've gotten it in the checkout lanes.... Good Luck!
