  • Kokopelli Basenjis in Rocky Hill, CT?

I just did a search for basenji breeders in CT and that one came up and is literally 3 miles from where I live… just curious if I have a legitimate fellow basenji person near me??

  • I don't know her but she is a BCOA member.

  • I knew that name rang a bell from somewhere on the forum.

  • ah yes…. i did read that now that I think back.

I just emailed her to see if i could swing by and meet her and her basenjis - as a fellow basenji lover and since we are practically neighbors! I miss seeing other basenjis!

This is where you heard the name

  • Hello!! Im actually buying a Basenji from her right now! I did a home visit and her B's are GORGIOUS In my opinion! She tests, has a great show record and I can tell by the visit she takes SUPER good care of her b's! Does anyone know anything else? So far I have visited three breeders in Ohio and Ct and Gretchen is BY FAR my favorite. hope I helped!

Not that I am doubting if she is a responsible breeder or not, as I don't know this person (have heard of the kennel name, however), but hopefully anyone that is considering a puppy from any breeder does their own checking and verifies testing information at www.offa.org. A responsible breeder should be "pleased" that you care enough to check on your own.

  • Hey Kira! Where in CT do you live? Gretchen lives about 3 miles away from me.. maybe when you get your new B we can have some playdates! I'm in Wethersfield, CT.

  • Sounds awesome. Im stationed in Groton at the sub base my DH is a submariner. Id LOVE to have a playdate with the puppy!! Socialization is SO important!!

  • AWW MAN! lol i wish I could have a basenji play date! lol Anyone know of anyone in Mitchell, SD? Would love to have a Basenji play date with anyone living here, or even passing through with their B's. :)

I assume you mean for next winter's litters ? Nothing available at all right now - all this winter's crop will have been promised long since and be leaving the nest soon if they aren't already resettled. However, if you email me (see signature block - email addresses are on the websites) I will send you a list of Breed Club secretaries.

@Channing's_Girl: I bought my pup from Mary Alaniz. She said his parents had been tested. He will be a year old in 5 days. So far no health problems. She was very nice and told me if I have any questions or need advice to contact her. I researched the breed and breeders for over a year before I bought one. I think if the dogs are well bred (in terms of genetics) and are healthy that it is oK if they are not AKC registered, especially if you are not interested in showing and are going to have them fixed anyways. Also, her dogs are pets to her, not just a dollar sign, she seems to really care about them, they live in her house, unlike some breeders who keep dogs in kennels. Good to hear. I bought my Basenji from her a couple years back as well. I got the runt of that litter (the last one left) but she's doing just fine.

@Nemo: Here's the link. http://www.basenji.org/learn/ Go to "screening breeders" at the top. That is a great list…and great explanations of why those questions are important.

@khanis: Not polished ??? Sorry, but that is one of the silliest things that I have heard in ages. **I'm sorry; to what is this referring? I have seen dogs that are uglier than sin.. in the show ring no less! People that can't breed a decent looking domestic basenji aren't going to be able to breed a decent looking African basenji! **Uglier than sin? Really? I really prefer health and temperament and function as breeding goals. IMHO. How is that for a bunch of African beauties??? **Your dogs are quite lovely. So are my two Jasiri-Sukari B's. But neither would win in a show. We think they're beautiful, too. And they both have sweet temperaments. Lucky us. :) s.
