I have the best mom/enabler ever!!!

  • My mom HATES shopping, so for birthdays & Christmas my sister & I are required to write out a wish list for her. She does her shopping online & buys us only things we request, and then always throws in a good bit of cash for us to pick what we want on our own as well. Not very original or creative, but works out very well for us… We are never unhappy.
This year, my mom carried on the tradition by buying me a stack of basenji related books I requested. Here's what I got:
    "Basenji" by Juliette Cunliffe
"Basenjis: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" by Mary Lou Kenworthy
    "Candle" by Sally Ann Smith
"August Magic" by Veronica Anne Starbuck
All of these were recommended by forum users, so thank you to everybody who posted in the "books" section for the leads. I can't wait to start reading!!!
I also got, non basenji-related, "Best Hikes With Dogs, Georgia & South Carolina"
    Yay for moms!!

  • Nice!

Good girl, Mom! Good girl! :D

  • What a great Mom.

  • That is awesome, for my mom I hunt out the best deals and send her a list with links…it works really well.

  • What a nice haul! Good mommy!

  • Hey- I am not sure if it is dog friendly- but Kennesaw Mountain is a GREAT hike…..there is actually a smaller trail off to one side of the main trail that fewer people know about....kind of rocky, but you can see some neat wildlife.

Funny you should mention it because mauigirl & I take our 4 to Kennesaw Mountain once a week!! It is GREAT! There is a 5 mile loop hike that really wears everybody out. Its perfect… we see tons of wildlife, lots of other dogs, everybody on the trail is very friendly. And best of all, everybody SLEEPS for the rest of the day!!! We LOVE it!

  • And Wednesdays come highly recommended, I hear. Mostly because when you get caught with, oh, 4 dogs off leash the ranger who patrols just says "Don't let any other rangers see you". Carrie saw him first b/c she was in front and tried to slyly pretend we didn't know we were being bad. I, on the other hand, let out a HUGE gasp. I know, so subtle.

  • Thats awesome! I used to do that hike all the time when I was a kid- never took a dog with me, though. I think the five mile loop hike is the one we used to do with school once a year.

    Wow- I really miss that!

I do agree that there are not always "obvious" disabilities for those with service dogs and that many of the laws/policies (in the US) are oppressive to dog owners i.e. you can be cited, in many jurisdictions, for leaving your dog in the car, but you can't bring them into the store either, or leave them tied up outside. But my OP was in regard to someone I have known for many years, and though she is getting on in years, has no disability, and the dog is not certified, just well-trained. I find this kind of abuse of 'the system' and of people's general kindness to be just wrong. Relating to handicapped parking, I would rather walk from the furthest parking available than park in a handicapped designated spot. My father has a handicapped hang tag (hip and knee surgeries) but keeps it in his glove box and only uses it if he's having a "bad" day. BTW: Kipawa - don't know where she got the "service dog" vest, but probably not e-Bay as she is not very 'computer savy'. I suspect from someone who actually has service dogs. Which, in and of itself, is another problem.

@lvoss: Not supporting Eukanuba/Iams but every link on that site is an internal one and they are obviously biased and pushing an animal rights agenda. Some of the copy is over the top but data appears solid. Our western culture seems entrenched in the belief other species do not experience pain nor do they have rich emotional lives.

@Quercus: Donna is AWESOME! She did a bunch of the trophies for last year's National…and she was very, VERY generous to us. Her work is great, and she is just a really good person! I know she did the puppies, but did she do the embroidered towels too? Those were cool. I particulary like the b/w puppy because it almost has the same markings as Zoni. :)

Hi and yes there is a small group of us here in LA. We meet up on Saturday's around 10ish at the Laurel Cyn Dog Park. The park is a good size located on a hill side with lots of tree's and benches. If the weather is nice we average about 5 Basenjis. It would be wonderful if you are able to swing by one day. I had a bitch from Cindy Clausen as well. I twas her 5th home in a 9-month time frame. Some up north may remember "Sami" She actually had one of the best temperaments I've dealt with in rescue dogs. Aside from her weird coat (thin and prickly) issue, she was healthy as an ox. A fanconi-carrier, thyroid normal, and CERFd at 4.5 years old. Hopefully this boy is as sweet as Sami was!
