Fanconi DNA Testing - Update - Cheek Swabs

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Great news!!!!!!

We have just received information that Cheek Swabs will be available for DNA Fanconi Testing. The Cheek Swab Kits will be available (soon) at www.offa.org for $5.00 each (Fanconi test will still cost 60.00 and be sent to U of Mo). Prior this cheek swab was only available for some re-testing that was being done.

So NOW it is even going to be easier for Fanconi testing… there is NO excuse that every single Basenji owner doesn't get their Basenjis tested. And there will certainly be NO excuse that a breeder doesn't have a sire/dam tested BEFORE breeding.

Please note however that blood samples are still being requested, because the Cheek Swab doesn't give enough DNA for future genetic testing.

I am sure that the information at www.basenjihealth.org will be updated soon about the Cheek Swab Test, but wanted to give everyone here a heads up.

@wizard: I've looked at that website but still don't understand the reason behind doing this test. It doesn't check for genetic defects just parentage. It seems it undeniably verifies parentage, but isn't that what the AKC registration does? There must be something I'm missing. It is to prove parentage… as you could put any name of any dog on a set of papers and sent them it.... which in cases of Puppy Millers and some BYB's that is was was being done..... so the parents were NOT the parents of a given puppy. If you read the minutes each month on the AKC site (Secretary's page) you can see how many litter registrations were reversed "due" to DNA parentage.

@tanza: I did send you an email, but it is good to repeat here, I think. The protocol for treatment of Fanconi, information about Fanconi, information about strip testing can be found both at www.basenji.org and www.basenjihealth.org Thank you so much for the info to pass on.

@Terry: I heard a rumor, wondered if anyone knows if it's true. The rumor was that an affected dog has been identified with 2 clear parents. Pat, I know you're usually up on this… Terry That seems to be the case, Lisa will most likely also chime in. They are now retest that dog along with his parents. As we all know there is always human error and the samples may have been mismarked. I have no doubt in the test (and I know that others will mostly likely use this as a way to discount the test), but I will stand on the over 1100 samples that have already been done and they all seem to be as they should. IMO and I have a sample that was most likely taken at the same time, that there was either a problem when the sample was sent in or there was a problem when the DNA was extracted. At the same time and the sample taken at the same time, there is another dog that is showing as Carrier from two clears… again that is being retested also...
