Yay, I have been accepted.

  • Well, now it really is official (I think), I am a new member of the BCOA. I got my welcome packet in the mail today. I was starting to just give up and try again when I get back to a big city with other BCOA members.

    Congrats and welcome!

    Congrats and welcome!

    +1 :)

Personally I find it an exciting time to be a member of the BCOA…with the stud books being re-opened and all.

  • Congrats :)

    Yes it is….

  • Well, alas, it appears I haven't been accepted after all. At the moment, it seems that everyone is out to trick me. I'm having issues with my apartment complex, the BCOA, CPP, and others.

Well. I guess I'm back to looking for BCOA members who are willing so sponsor me for the BCOA? I know there are some that like to talk in person and sponsorships are not to be simply given away. If anyone would like to talk to me, and maybe sponsor me, please let me know.

  • Michael, what I did when I wanted to join, was to connect up with the local basenji breed club.
I went to the dog shows, I got to know folks and they got to know me, and it happened pretty quickly.
That would be my suggestion to you.
It takes a bit of time, but its so worth it.

    What happened this time?

  • Sharron, That's what i did the first time, and it was all good, then both sponsors changed their mind without telling me and decided that they needed Medjai to be neutered to be my sponsors. I got Medjai neutered because of the CPP results (still slightly questionable), and apparently never got accepted.

Pat, I was trying to change my address listed with the BCOA, to my parents, so I can still get mail, and won't have to worry about lost mail when I do move in May, and got a response from Anne. She wrote me saying that the reason I had trouble updating my address, is that I was never accepted into the BCOA.

I find this really confusing, because I got a welcome packet, and a complimentary copy of the yodeler, and a directory. I assumed that the welcome papers, and bylaws with the directory was an indicator that I was accepted, or why would I need a paper copy of all the paperwork available online, and a welcome packet.

  • If you got the directory, doesn't that mean you WERE accepted?

  • That's exactly what I thought.

  • @etzbseder:

    That's exactly what I thought.

You should email Anne and find out exactly what the deal is… I am pretty sure that I saw that you were voted in?

  • Yes, contact BCOA and ask!

  • After contacting BCOA, I got the answer that basically there were clerical errors, and I need to find two new sponsors, and resubmit my complete application. Now that I'm living in Greeley full time and there is no Basenji club here, I will be looking on the forum again.

Just curious, but what do you mean by the CPP results being slightly questionable?

  • Oh, I've just got a separate issue with the fanconi results, that I'm getting straightened out, it's just weird that everything hit at the same time.

  • I am confused.

DID they send you a Welcome Letter and then a Roster and now are saying you aren't a member???

  • YES, it was a mistake (I'm told) on their part, and I was not actually accepted. Therefor I am on the hunt again for sponsors, which is harder this time, as I am in Greeley more full time and don't have availability to drive to denver for the HCBC events, and don't see any upcomming shows for awhile.

@abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

@julia87 How much do you know about Basenjis? Have you met any? It's highly recommended to learn as much as possible about them before making a decision to acquire one. This would be a good place to start.

Welcome aboard, but do share his registered name ? Who are Dad and Mom and what was his date of birth so we can be sure to add him to the Basenji pedigree on-line database (with a photo ???) for the world to share him. http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/

@msjames, @tanza did you a solid favor outlining expectations. Networking really is key to finding a "reputable" breeder. Most show their dogs and are connected to other breeders through showing. They all seem to know who is planning a litter and who isn't. I completely agree with Pat that you should meet your breeder in person prior to the puppies even being born. You can learn a lot. Is a Basenji right for you? If you want a dog to hang with you in the driveway with the garage door open as you chat with neighbors, or stand calmly with the front door open as you receive a UPS package... ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Basenjis will bolt. they'll be gone in a second. They see it. They chase it. And if you think you have them trained... no. They've trained you. When they see it they will chase it. Basenjis, in my experience, need exercise. Mine get two walks a day. When they don't, they can be destructive. They're not shy about expressing frustration or displeasure through chewing up your best stuff. A big secure yard can mitigate this, but that's not a guarantee. They love seeing outside, so keep your blinds and drapes open otherwise they may open them themselves even if that requires chewing through them. They will climb onto windowsills, tables and low counter tops. They are capable of scaling a six-foot fence. They are known to climb trees. These are extreme examples, but better to know now. They are super affectionate. They can be trained... to a point. They are clowns and provide endless entertainment. A Basenji baroo is the best sound ever! They love to snuggle and will sleep on your bed and under the spreads and sheets if you let them. They love to share body heat. Tail twitches when I return home are the best!
