Sherwood's Breeding Plans

  • Oh Robyn….such a bitter sweet day for you. Still sending good thoughts and prayers to you, Bindi and little 'Lady Nascar' (actually I'm calling her Danica in my head--I know that's Indy, but she's just sooo pretty)

Big basenji hugs from Katie and Ty to Bindi,
    Dawn

  • Robyn, we are so sorry about the two stillborn pups. I hope #1 continues to thrive and Bindi does fine. Please continue to keep us informed. Still saying prayers that all goes well….

    Pat

  • Prayers & best wishes that Bindi & the other pups are safe & healthy!

  • Oh my. Bless Bindi's little heart. I'll be thinking of you all and sending good thoughts your way.

  • With my Fatia's litter I have one pup with exposed skull…. he was born 4 hrs after the other 4... A worse breeders nightmare.. he was still alive and I had to get him to the Vet to be PTS, asap.....
So sorry for the still borns....

Another reason for xrays before birth... we knew that there was at least 4 but there was a 5th we thought, and so that was right... and so when she only whelped 4 in 2 hrs, we knew there was a problem.... and was able to stay in touch with the Vet... and deal with the last pup....

  • 4th puppy arrived stillborn at 9:56 pm. It's head was open with an exposed skull too. As far as I can tell, Bindi's milk has not let down either. I'll be at the vet's office when they open in the morning. Hopefully Bindi's milk will flow by then but if not, a shot of oxytocin should clean her out and bring in the milk.

I am stunned. I just don't believe this is happening. THREE puppies in one litter? WTH is going on here? :(

  • Robyn, What a hard year for you. I am just stunned by these events. It will be interesting to hear what the vet has to say. And this little girl needs a special name worthy of being such a survivor.

    Sending big hugs your way…

    Pat and all

  • @BasenjiDiva:

And this little girl needs a special name worthy of being such a survivor.

I have a name selected, assuming she lives. sighs

Robyn, What a hard year for you. I am just stunned by these events.

Did I mention that my "new" computer died yesterday? 2009 isn't getting off to a good start. :(

  • I'll be thinking of you, Bindi, and the pup. I hope the rest of the evening is uneventful and the vet visit goes well in the morning.

  • Robyn, I am so sorry things aren't going well. You, Bindi, and Little Nascar are in my prayers.

  • I'm sorry Robyn.

I do understand why you named her Little Nascar-she has a racing stripe!

Let us know what happens at the vet.

  • Robyn,

just wanted you to know we are sending good feelings and hope to your little girl who made it. I'm very sorry to hear about all the difficulties with this litter. Big hugs from Lycia and I.

  • I am so sorry Robyn. That must be so traumatic for everyone. Hugs to all of you..and thoughts and prayers for little Nascar girl.

  • So sorry to hear about the three pups.. I hope the girl is going to make it. She looks so beautiful..

  • I took Bindi, the live pup, and the 3 dead ones to the vet today. Dr. DeHaven said that since 3 pups were affected, she thinks that they were in one uterine horn and that the horn had become infected somehow. The infection killed the pups and the reason the skin was pulled away from the skulls was that they had been dead a while and were starting to decompose. The live pup would have been in the other uterine horn which was not infected. Since Bindi never ran a fever and the pups most likely died prior to Bindi losing her appetite, there was no way anyone could have known. Dr. DeHaven gave Bindi a shot of oxytocin to expell the contents of her uterus. This should clear out the infection. She opted to not give antibiotics due to Bindi nursing the pup but if Bindi develops a fever and does not regain her appetite they may be necessary. I feel better knowing that this wasn't some kind of birth defect or something I may have done wrong but I am still depressed at the loss of the 3 pups.

  • I'm glad to hear that Bindi and her little girl are doing okay. Is she now nursing? I checked the forum repeatedly today to see if there was an update. I know so many of us wish we could reach out and give you a collective hug. And give Bindi a some extra loving from us.

I'm not a mathematical genius but if bad luck does come in threes, you are SOOOO overdue some good luck.

    Pat

  • I'm sorry for the loss of the pups. Sending good thoughts for Bindi and Little Nascar Girl.

  • Good wishes for Bindi and the pup. Poor little pups, at least you know what caused the problems. Hope Bindi recovers completely!

They will be very pretty babies. Jaycee is on the down side of her heat I was not sure but I thought it was early but at least almost done. Rita Jean

Seems like the DNA sample would be easier to get too. I guess the advantage of the sperm count is that you at least know if the sire is fertile or not. Good luck, can't wait to see pictures of the pups to be.

Well got some batteries for my pedipaws and showed Kaiser held it against his leg turned it on, held it against his nail turned it on said good boy and put it away. Later in the day had a go at using it for real with treat rewards since he had reacted so well, no problem always amazes me how calm he is. Went from toe to toe as they get hot and finished all of them. Do see it doesn't have much power but think it is a good start for me to use until I can get a Dremel and didn't take me as long as using clippers and then hand filing, so will use it weekly and take a little off each time. Cost me NZ$11.50 including postage but not including battery cost, so wasn't too bothered if it didn't suit. Happy me, happy basenji. Jolanda and Kaiser
