  • Dude- go on YouTube and search Basenji and Godfather. There is a video of a basenji "singing" along to the godfather soundtrack…...it is hilarious! He gets all into it, like he is performing- its freaking awesome! I'll see if I can find the link.

You are right, this dog is a genious!!!I am at last discovering that they have a voice, and what a voice :D

  • Jack is silent too, I played that video for him once and he looked at me like, "Can you turn down that AWFUL racket?!" He has no desire whatsoever to sing along.

  • I played it for Tosca, too, hoping she'd join in, but it made her do was the adorable head tilt!

  • Yes, mine too, just a lot of noise for her, no wish to join in! What a disappointment…was so hopeful to hear a potential star, well, will have to play a musical instrument and test it: my ex husband who is Scottish used to play the backpipes, maybe he could have a go and if she doesn't sing along, I give up!

  • Forgot to say that when I played it, my two cats hid under the sofa!

  • I played for my husband and he came pretty close to hiding under the sofa, too!

  • Oh my Gosh have any of you seen the you tube video "The Great Basenji Hunter?" It is unbelievable. This is truly a side to a basenji I have never ever seen and hope I never will. Here it is.

I couldn't even finish watching that. That guy needs to be erased from the internet.

  • jack is pretty much silent, but I imagine that while I am at work during the day, he sings his heart out with no one around.

I really didn't like this video and watch the way the owner kept annoying the dog and entice him to bite! I have seen mine grunt a bit if I try to move her from a comfortable place but I deal with that quickly: either I leave her a lone or I talk to her when I am approaching her, don't look at her in the eyes, grab her collar and move her. Did that a few times and now she knows the scenario and moves when she sees I mean "I'm the boss". I don't think it's a good idea to annoy them when they are growling like on the video as they don't know what we want out of them. It's not unique to Basenjis, my small italian greyhound was doing the same. I think Basenjis are intelligent dogs and understand quickly when we are not amused.

  • we're trying to make him watch the video… but he just turned around and went back to sleep.

is there a certain age that they start to yodel? he's already 4 months and we've yet to hear him make a sound. either then the occasional whinning. :(

we wish he was a singer.

I played your video this morning. Cory just slept through it but Jayden was VERY interested. He finally got up into my lap to watch it on the computer screen.

Most likely going to be "quiet" and not a "singer"….

This past winter, Ruby's breeder has a bitch who had a litter of pups that were singing before their eyes were fully open (the "Jazz" litter)…it was the cutest thing I've ever seen. So based on that, I'd say "no" there isn't a certain age.

  • Jack makes this Yawning sound when he is irritated with us for not showing him enough attention, or if I'm not fast enough to take him out…..It used to be just a morning stretch thing, but I started praising him like crazy, and now he does it to talk to us. He did it once while I was on the phone with my mom, and she was seriously alarmed trying to figure out what it was.

The other funny thing is that Jack never barked until we went for Christmas to my sisters. She has a big dog and my parents dog was there as well....both barkers....after we came back from there, every once in a while he will let out one short bark.

So, from that, I think that praise and the example of other dogs can maybe encourage the noise-making tendencies. Although, just like people, if a dog is a quiet dog, it probably won't matter how many singers you get them around, they probably won't get there.

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
