    Hey I had a question for everyoine,
    My little Zaire is currently blowing coat. I have noticed that as she has started this she has become ALOT more aggresive towards Charlie. She will be sitting minding her own buisness and he will walk by her and she picks a fight. I haven't been sure if this is just her getting older and trying to vie for her pack position, or if it is related to loosing hair. Has anyone else experienced behavior changes with their Bs durring coat blowing?

    How old is she? Is she spayed? I have never notice behavior changes just from blowing coat… coming in season, yes for sure... and breeding season is so in-grained in Basenjis that many time even a spayed bitch will exhibit behavior changes during breeding season... certainly it is true for the males (neutered males), my boys even after being fixed certainly knew when breeding season was, even with no in-tact bitches in the house.

    I agree with Pat, behavioral changes because it is that time of year could be an explanation. The only other examples I know of where coat changes and behavioral changes are linked is if the dog may be hypothyroid. Both coat changes and irritability are symptoms of hypothyroidism.

    Hmm…well she is fixed 8 months old now, I guess she may be reacting to the season. I am doubting hyperthyroid at this time as their has been no change in water or food intake, and she is still gaining weight, as well her coat is not dulling, just her first coat blow. I am wondering if it may be that she is just finaly trying to take the full alpha position from Charlie, She is finaly taller than he is now, and he was a little mean at times when she was very young. I will keep an eye on her water and food intake, as well as her weight. If she starts intaking more, and looses any weight I will take her in.

    One other thing...it appears to be only aggression towards Charlie (Fixed male Parson Russell), not to people or the other dog (A fixed male min-pin)

    Water and/or food intact would not typically be noticed by Thyroid…. Weight is a key, both over and under weight.

    And it very well could be just her wanting to change the pack order....

    Yea I was thinking that might be the case…I should mention that the min-pin is a new addition as we are moving into a house. He is owned by a very good friend of mine who is moving with us and staying at the townhome for the next 2 weeks untill we close on the house. They have all played together at both his old place and the townhouse....It may be that she wants the boys to know who is in control. :)

    @rocky1 I'm so very sorry for your loss. They become such a part of our souls. I've already had a few tears over just the thought of what it will be like without him.

    A way to do what Debra is suggesting in a game format is Crate Games, which you can get on DVD. You said this happens when you are getting ready to leave. Pay attention to exactly what you are doing before you leave and then see how your dog is reacting. You should be able to pick up on the cues that your dog is picking up on. You can try changing the pattern of how you get ready and potentially remove the cue to lessen the behavior until you can build the good associations others described. visit BCOA on Facebook. http://facebook.com/basenji.org

    Since Sonny joined the family three years ago its seems everyone has invested in a pub style table! my house, my parents & my brother. he can't reach so he doesn't even try. sometimes its just easier to out smart them! :D The two things that just overwhelm sonny are cheese and steak…he'll do anything to try and get it and I swear he blocks me out and is lost in a trance! ;)

    @LBRunyon: I have a supplementary question along these same lines . We got our BRAT Ricky two weeks ago ( YIPPEE!!!! ) He is WONDERFUL . The only problem we are having is that he WILL NOT potty in our fenced in yard . In fact , it seems he won't go within 1 block of our house . We walk in the am and pm . He is very particular about where he will go, though he sniffs every available surface . While the weather is nice , I really don't mind this . We would be walking anyway . But when the frigid cold hits , it would be nice to open the door and have him go out , do his business quickly , and return . We have tried waiting him out in hopes of praise and treats once he goes in the yard . But Mr. iron- bladder- steel- sphincter WON'T go in the yard. Are there any suggestions ?Oh , by the way, once we are out of the yard and down the street he goes after a few quick sniffs . I have to take my B outside no matter what. It's nice during the spring/summer/fall, but the midst of winter is just simply brutal. -20F with a nice wind (colder windchill) will make any B go quickly, but it's still painful for us humans.

    Hello, I just wanted to send a quick update on Nulla. She is doing so well! We started a dog training course where my boyfriend and I are the alpha dogs. There is not treats involved and it has shown amazing results. Nulla has been in the course for about a month now. We have had no eating problems from her (no barfing, no not eating what we set our for her), no behavioral problems (no chewing my shoes, etc). She seems so happy and I am sure she is gaining weight (although I have not weighed her). I think dog training is completely necessary and we've seen HUGE results in Nulla. Everything I posted about before is no longer a concern. Thanks for all the input though. Take Care :)
