Kennel cough from the vet?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • So i just picked up Lenny from the vet yesterday after his neuter. I noticed he let out a little cough when the vet tech gave him a treat. I got him home, he laid around for most of the night, probably hungover from the meds… well, throughout the night he has progressively started doing coughing... 3 or 4 times and it usually ends in a gagging type sound like he is throwing up but nothing comes out.

It's exactly like when both Tayda and Lenny got kennel cough a couple years ago... just seems a little weird, as he was just at the vet yesterday. Isn't the incubation time as least a few days? and we really haven't been in contact w/ any other dogs for at least 3 weeks.

I just want to make sure its not some weird side effect from the anesthesia... any ideas?

  • It is most likely just a reaction to his trach tube (assuming he had one). It makes the throat scratchy and sore in everyone…and I think there would be a dry sounding cough associated with the feeling. Could be that he was just a little nauseous from the anesthesia as well...some are more sensitive to the recovery than others!

I wouldn't worry too much. I agree that it would be really unlikely for kennel cough to show up that quickly after exposure.

  • It would be 5 to 7 days for kennel cough to show up. It is very common for them to have a cough for a couple of days (even up to a week) from the trach tube.

  • Yep! I called the vet and thats what she said also. You guys know everything!

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

Thank you, All, so much for your time and helpful advice! Okay, we did something yesterday that may have been foolish but at the time his cough had gotten bad and after spending so much on vet bills and prescriptions, we decided to invest in a bottle of infant cough medicine. We gave a small dosage to Mack and after coughing up a big glob his coughing has subsided and he appears to be feeling better. We won't be repeating the dosage. I do love the idea of elderberry and honey! However, our fear of negative results after trying the infant medicine had us so on edge that if Mack does start coughing again, we will call the vet. Thank you all, again! I appreciate you!!

went to the vet today. he said i caught it early. he didnt hear anything in his lungs, but his glands were enlarged. he gave him a cough supressant and antibiotics. after putting a humidifier in my room, its really helped his nighttime coughing fits. so he has another apt in a couple weeks. just going to give him lots of rest and his meds. he will be good as new. doc said he's in great shape for his age. could use a teeth cleaning tho! haha

@Benkura: His brother is my other boy 'Cahnce' who is Clear. It's just Chance & Trouper are chalk and cheese and both have good to offer the breed. I did wonder whether neutering him would be beneficial or not. Wasn't sure if it might induce too much stress. However, I would have to stop showing him if I did that and he already has 1 CC. I would not worry about doing it now… only something to consider "IF" he starts showing symptoms.... When Jaadii came down with Fanconi it was before the DNA test was available, so no one knew until he started spilling sugar. He was fine 11 months out of the year, but during Basenji breeding season he was a mess... and that was a lot of stress on him... So being neutered was not stressful, it was NOT being neutered that was. That said, not all dogs are alike... each are different... just putting in what we found with Jaadii....

@Phebese: We take Max to the Banfield in the Petsmart on Cobb Pkwy in Acworth. We have gone to many different veterinarians but only found two that we feel comfortable with. We have the Banfield insurance which really helps, but most importantly he is comfortable going there and we trust them. He has been there twice in the past couple of weeks getting a cyst removed. They call in between appointments to check on him and see if we have any concerns. We do not like all the Banfield clinics, in fact the one on 92 we did not like. Another good vet is Randy Esbeck at Sawnee Animal Clinic 770-887-1900. He is a Basenji specialist. It's in Cumming Georgia. It's just to far for us to go. Good Luck, Max's Mom (Emily) As they say, it is not the place but the Vet that is working there…. so while many of the Banfield clinic might not be good, when you luck into a good Vet.. that makes the clinic... IMO
