• Kiya is the yodel queen. She yodels when we come home, she yodels when she gets into trouble and she yodels when she wants to tell her new young brother "NO, IT'S MINE!"

Lance hasn't found his voice yet, except to cry his disdain at being kenneled up. 😃

    I love talkative Basenjis 🙂

As for my dad's red and white boy Simeon…he only uses his voice to snarl at me. 😣 He doesn't like me 1/2 the time...the other 1/2 he can't get enough of my attention! Let's just say...he has a screw loose! haha

  • @Bettawhippet:

How often do your B's yodel and what triggers them to do it?

    Isn't it WONDERFUL?

Arwen doesn't yodel. In fact she can do a freaky howl and she says a very very clear "R". We laughed when we got her cause I had already named her ARWEN and it was like she was saying her name. Then we said it stands for :
are you going to pet me
are you going to feed me
are you going to let me out…

THEN we got the foster Maya and she started vocalizing a LOT more, but not yodels.

Sayblee, however, is very very very vocal, including yodels. She says "I want some" and many demonic crazed alien pig noises, and screams.

Yodeling I cannot ever manage to get trained. She does a lot of tricks and says "I want some" on command, but not yodel.

She will yodel her head off for my husband though. And if my neighbor comes outside to mow she yodels nearly the whole time he is out. The other day she was going on and on but no mower so I went to look... he was working on his storage building.

I used to feel insulted, but I guess she just likes to flirt with the men around her. 😞 WAHHHHHHHHH. Okay, guess I still feel insulted.

  • @youngandtired:

Sahara has yodeled several times, usually when she is happy or just glad to see someone she hasn't seen in awhile. My son who lives about an hour from here gets a yodel everytime he comes home for a visit. She has yodeled for the Pet Stop underground fence man before, which, is strange. If only she knew why he is here. haha!!!!

ROFLMAO! That is just mean, lol.

re: barking… both mine, being raised with barkers, learned to bark. its a single bark, though and they don't do it often. We tell them they are defective when they bark. 🙂

  • Nala rarely yodels and she's almost 8. She will do what describe as a "berf", sort of bark on occasion too. She does, however make "ugly" noises (a low growl like the beginning of a yodel, with no bared teeth) if disgruntled as a kind of warning and she of course, does the major "separation anxiety scream". My neighbor told that they should record the noise for scary movies!
I'm so happy that Kiora yodeled for you (and I'm envious too!)

  • Curie yodels – almost entirely for men. I think she has done it twice for me, but she does it every time she sees my teenaged boys.

Will hasn't so far. He has only been here for a couple of months now, so I've been half-wondering if maybe he just isn't quite relaxed enough.

They both use the demonic swahili voice when they are "discussing" important things like whose bone this is.

  • 😃 Too funny Listeme - Thanks for the giggle. You are blessed with amusement.:D

At least, you get Basenji talk.

  • We have one barker; her litter sister does too. She barks once if she thinks we're too slow getting the food out to her. She doesn't bark in a series, but will bark again to say "Hurry up, starving here!!"

  • How old is Kiora?

Kiora is about 11 months old, I believe. Her last owner thought that she was much younger (about 9 months now) But I don't think so since she is now full sized and was only a little bit lighter and no shorter then she is now when I got her. Also aren't B's born around Nov/Dec. Plus her old owner didn't even know her birth month, and didn't know much about dogs in general. My vet agrees with my approximated age for her, and I had her (Kiora that is, not my vet) spayed two weeks ago.

  • Abbey can say Erp if she's really annoyed that someone has come in to the yard. She yodels when we play or if she thinks something's really funny. But when she's been left alone for like 30 minutes when Mom has gone to the grocery store, she does the most hideous Somebody Help Me Please I'm Being Drawn and Quartered!!! scream that will make your hair stand up.

  • Joey gave his first 'Baroooooo' today when I didn't give him as much attention as he wanted after I came home. I was surprised and thrilled! It was so fun to hear it since most of the time he is quiet unless growling when someone disturbs him while he is sleeping. Is there a difference between a baroo and a yodel? Once before when I didn't give him adequate attention, he batted my leg to let me know, Hey I'm down here waiting for more attention!
