  • thats interesting theres a dog that repeats in each pedigree Juju's pistol pete…

  • @satieo:

I do have a reputable breeder nearby that is willing to help but I like to get other opnions as well. trust I'm not ready to breed anytime soon and therefore wont.

Wonderful! The more information you can gather, the better! And a nearby mentor is a blessing! :)

  • yes, I was very excited when I found debbie. I just hope I can become reputable as well. It takes so much.

  • If you plan on getting a girl to show and if she turns out health, temperament, and conformation-wise to breed, then usually the route taken is to look for a stud that will compliment the girl and take you in the direction you want to go. So even if this boy does finish his championship and does check out healthwise, he may still not be a good match for your future girl and you will not have the vertical information that you would get from a responsible bred stud dog.

Planning a litter is a lot of work and it is good if you have a good mentor to help you pour over pedigrees, health information, and look at the actual dogs so you can make a good match. Getting other opinions can be helpful in showing a direction that you may not have seen otherwise but you also need to know what your own goals are.

  • Thanx again for all the advice….I'll get him neutered, it's disappointing cause he is a looker and great disposition. But that's not all I want to breed for. Pedigree is important and I understand that. And even if I convinced my brother (his owner) to let me show him I wouldn't be able to keep up with it because he lives 3 hrs from me. AH well, at least he has a good home now.
I'm sure everyone here will get sick of me :D I ask a ton of questions

This is how we all learn, by asking the questions…. keep asking!!!!

this usually happens with BYB's and PM breedings… they get one or two dogs and just keep breeding them to uncles/aunts/sister/brother....

Juju's Pistol Pete was a good dog, however, there are some in his line that have produced bad hips... so line breeding on him could be not a good thing

  • We actually got our B's from the same person. Funny that I was trying to find someone who got their pups from the same person myself. She's a backyard breeder. Unfortunately we learned this after the fact.

I would NOT breed your dog. We love our boys, but they've had their fair share of health problems that are genetic. Watch out for demodetic mange and a luxating patella. Our one B is also on Atopica for skin problems.
Wonderful disposition though. We're also going to be getting them tested for Fanconi.

If you want her address and such let me know and I can email you the info.

  • Sounds like you have lots of good info on these posts.
    Good luck.

  • Luxating pattella's can be check by your regular Vet during a regular Vet visit.. and not a bad thing to do… seems that we are finding this problem a bit more then we would like in our breed.

@tanza said in Help with getting started.: @debradownsouth and @mshilo - Please take your "private war" private.... both of you have hijacked this thread and I am sure that the person that started it has left never to return, so we all missed an opportunity to educate a possible new Basenji person Scroll up and read... this person attacks everyone, nonstop. Sadly the person wanted easy and when Mshilo told him to join a board for buying dogs, off he went. Do I need to ignore him? Not when he spouts abuse against me or gives bad info. But I'll try. Note that whether I do or don't, he attacks others because he NEEDS attention. So be it.

When we were showing, baths were done the night before we left for each show. Now, they get two a year, once when the coats are shedding and the other right before cold weather is going to start. Of course, the muddy situations sometimes occur and that throws in another one or two a year. But they are such clean dogs, they pretty much take care of it themselves. But when we had pups did bathe more frequently until each accepted it as a matter of course.

last fall was my first time with intact males and an in season girl. i'd plugged it in when z first started maybe/possibly coming in. i had no idea if it worked. until it expired. oh my! the whining all night long. i looked at the calendar, sure enough, no more DAP. there was still liquid in the container, so i thought it was still working - nope. so, replace on schedule.

@Quercus: http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/ Did you try here, above? Can you put the sire and dam's numbers into the ACA website? Or is there a number to actually talk to someone, maybe they could help you more? I would think that since you have the litter number, the ACA could help you, if you could talk to a human…. I contacted the ACA last Friday and was told I had to prove that Tippy was a rescue by faxing such documentation. I sent that information in, similar to the info shown in the original post above, including BRAT documentation accordingly. Then, yesterday, I followed up with ACA and was told that a supervisor made the determination that they could'nt help me unless BRAT issued an ACA registration application to me. Then I contacted a few BRAT board members and one answered saying they've never had seen nor heard of such a thing. I'm beginning to feel like the ACA is trying to hide something, something to the effect that they are really a "false marketing front" for the profit-making pet industry. A couple of very nice basenji-loving folks have stepped forward to try to help track down potential puppy mill/pedigree information, but if they are not successful, I wonder how I can convince the ACA that my interest in Tippy's pedigree is purely medical and to support the Fanconi research efforts? Does anyone think it would help if I told the ACA that Tippy is already neutered (as BRAT requires for all their rescues)? I don't necessarily want to register him at all, but if that's what it takes to get his pedigree, I will do it.

It's all good. If it weren't for the constant incontinance, I'd wonder about him having Fanconi too. It still amazes me how "normal" they can act while being so sick!
