Not eating in the morning

  • When we got Harley, we were told he eats 2x a day. Sometimes he eats in the morning, but most mornings he either only eats some of his food or leaves it alone entirely.

One of the mornings that he didn't eat, he went outside & threw up (which I've read can be because of not eating, then they throw up bile).

Anyway, I've reduced his food in the morning so that it's not such a waste if he doesn't eat it, but not sure what to do. Do we just cut out the morning feeding? Or reduce the food even more in the morning? Any input or ideas are welcome!

  • Give Harley a couple of dry dog biskets. Then offer food at a later time.
He might be going too long between meals and this makes the bile in his gut.
So, he might wake up with a sore tummy.
Also, I would give him a couple of dry biskets before bed.
Harley is very lucky to have found you.

  • Sometimes Jazz doesn't want to eat in the morning either. I'll sprinkle just a touch of garlic powder on her food, add a bit of water, and then she will eat.
Sometimes I give each of the dogs a little egg on their food, and she always eats that.

She is also the only one of mine that occasionally throws up bile in the morning.

I do give the dogs treats when they are put to bed, between 10 and 11 PM.

I would reduce the morning food…. if he is not eating it.. there is no reason to try to feed it... and you might want to try reducing the evening meal.. and adding that to the morning...

We gave Harley a couple of biscuits last night when we went to bed (11pm) and he got up this morning & ate most of his breakfast! :) We'll try again & see if that continues to do the trick.

  • Wonderful…he didn't wake up with a tummy hurting!
    Good job.

Put the food down for 15 minutes then take it away. Do NOT leave it out for her to pick at until the next feeding. There are two reasons for this. The first is you want to know exactly how much she is really eating at each feeding. The second is by removing her access to food in between feedings you will teach her to eat when food is offered because food won't be available whenever she wants it. As for her thinnning out, my puppy boy is going to be 17 weeks old on Thursday and is a bit skinny this week since he had a growth spurt. Puppies tend to go through cycles of just a little pudgy, just right, a bit skinny and back again as they grow and their calorie demands flux depending on the amount of growth.

Wonderful news! Topper gets 4-5 pills twice a day and he too is very suspicious. I alternate things, but a tiny bit of cream cheese with a couple of pills in it, dunked in left-over pot roast gravy, is the best I have found. When all else fails, I dunk the pills in a bite of vanilla ice cream. Keep up the great work with Tayda!

He seems to be getting a little better… I am trying to keep him hydrated and have been feeding him baby food, which he has, for the most part, kept down. He has been peeing multiple times a day and actually pooped this morning which was a breakthrough, but nothing came out that seemed problematic. He is not as active as he normally is, but he does still have a little pep. Hopefully when I get home he will excrete whatever is clogging up his system. The last time this happened, the doc took about 12 x-rays but could not really conclude anything from them. So I ended up paying about $1700 to just let him pass it on his own. They did give him an IV, which I think helped, but I didn't figure out what was going on until he was already dehydrated last time. I think since he is keeping down the water/food I give him and is consistantly peeing thats a good sign. If he starts to act more lethargic, or starts to vomit what i give him, I"ll take him in....
