Tri 3yo needs rescued- Ohio

Basenji Rescue

  • This is not my dog, but I know of a purebred Tri basenji that is most likely going to need a new home.. I have met him and he was very sweet and playful.. His major behavioral problem is aggression to men.. He was abused by his owners ex-husband, so now he has a fear of males.. He has biten males, but is a sweetheart with females.. he has also not been around children, so he can only go to a home with females, no men or kids.. I know its probably going to be near impossible to find him a homelpd7@hotmail.com
there would be no fee involved, he is nuetered and UTD on shots/meds..

  • Is the breeder known?
And if a Basenji savey home… I would wonder if the issues with men can't be overcome.....

  • No pat, he's a puppymill B- the owner got the boy from a petland i believe, and she recently went through a divorce and is living with her brother, and cant keep the dog.. and you might be right about the issue with men being able to be resolved, but i wanted to make sure my post was clear that he does have serious issues with men..

Which certainly is a good thing to make sure people know (about men and children)….. hope that he finds his forever home....

  • I hope he does also, if he doesnt find a home there is a chance he will be put to sleep.. and that would be a real shame! he was so sweet when i got to meet him.. if only i could take one more! and BTW i love your avatar!

  • DiegosMom,
Can you contact me privately? My email link is in my profile

  • I would suggest that the owners contact BRAT.
As we all know, b's can nip, pinch and sometimes bite, and bite bad.
But sometimes we can set the dog up in a home where this can be controlled.
    Or not.
    Sigh.
This type of post breaks my heart, because, someone is going to have to make a very hard decision.
Let me know if I can help.
We can take this private if you wish.

  • sorry i forgot i cant post my email address!! Sorry forum admin!

  • Sharron- I got your email addy from the BRAT stationmaster list, so you should be getting an email from me with further detail..

  • Pat, I have no ideas to help.
    Do you??

  • I contacted America's Basenji Rescue and explained the situation to them, hopefully I will hear back from them soon.. Thanks for your help sharron and pat!

  • This is such a tough one.
When I got dogs such as this one, I only had 2 ways to go.
Keep the dog at my house and manage the biting behavior or
putting the basenji to sleep, which is awful…
    Good luck on this.
    Do let us know.

No, I don't, as I understand this boy is with a BRAT person and bit them, so they will not place him. I did give her another possible group to contact.

  • I do so hope this group can help.
This is hard to see/know about.
I am praying he gets another break.

  • Thanks Sharron- We are trying to work someone out.. Dont know whats gonna happen yet, but i will let you know.. fingers crossed he will get a second chance..

  • If we were not already up to the allowable limit for dogs in KC I would love to try and turn him around. Our Jindo, Sami, was also a man hater to begin with and in a 45 pound dog it is a little more serious than with a B. I have to admit that it took a while and a lot of patience but Sami is a big lover dog now. I cannot even begin to count the number of times she bit me over the first year or 2. It just takes a lot of love and understanding.

  • Its one thing for someone like you or I to take on one of these dogs.
We have had b's like this before and know what you have to do and the risks.
But the general public…well, that is a whole other thing.
I am still praying this dog finds a home like ours.

I might be interested in this basenji. I would gladly take him before he would be put to sleep. Please keep me informed.

  • I so hope someone can give this boy a chance.

I would take her in a heartbeat if I had room.. unfortunately I'm pushing my limits with my father already, as I've saved a few cats while living with him again. She sounds like a wonderful dog. I have no doubt that the bites were provoked. Dogs, especially Basenjis, can be very sensitive. If you don't understand that you're dealing with an animal that has feelings too, you're in trouble. I will keep her in my prayers. May she find the best fur-ever home!

@sharronhurlbut: Nemo, BRAT will take him, but lets see if the owner will turn him over to BRAT first. Bless your heart for the offer. He's not asking for much, so hopefully there is a good chance of that. I think he just wants the dog off his hands.

This group and BRAT are great…everyone wants to do what they can to help these old dogs who fall on hard times. These type of b's just break my heart. Glad to hear this old dear will fall into soft hands.

I wanted to get Roo but I have a couple family members that have been ill and don't want to have to board a newly arrived furry friend. So … we will wait to adopt again.

Your very welcome…I hope you have a good time. The thing to remember, if you get a jerk who comes by, is to be polite and just listen to them. They really don't care what you have to say, just want to vent and see a reaction. I always smile, say, oh, I am so sorry you had that happen to you...and then just get busy talking to someone else. BUT mostly its just good fun with very nice folks who want to talk dogs.
