Jumping up and down dog

Basenji Talk
  • I read on Wikipedia that one of the basenji's names in Africa is "mbwa mkube mbwa wamwitu," which means "jumping up and down dog." The name has to do with their tendency to jump up to spot prey when they lose sight of it in the high grass. Today Abbey and I were walking past a thick hedge when she heard sort of a twittering sound on the other side. A bird maybe? First she went up on her hind legs and was sort of dancing back and forth. No luck. So she started bouncing up and down like she was on a pogo stick and every time she came she made a quick sweep with her head to try to spot it. I know she has a very high prey drive, but I've never seen her do this before. It was something to behold, a basenji in action. Don't we have the coolest dogs in the world? They like being pampered and we get lots of love and laughs from them. They will never have to hunt any farther than the bowl for supper but yet they still have traits passed down from thousands of years of basenji ancestors.

  • Yea, I love this breed, everyday is a new adventure. They are the coolest dogs, always amazing their humans. haha:)

Well, the lab I mentioned (chocolate overweight one) almost took me out by slamming into my knee. I commented loudly " he better not insure my knee!" No comment from the owner. Others were keeping an eye on this over exhuberant dog too. Many peeps were standing behind a bench for protection. What really bugs me is that the park has very visible signs when you enter it that say you must have control of your dog.

Jaycee digs same way but she does somersaults head down over she gos first time neighbor saw it they could not beleive it. I think neighbor came over every day for a week waiting to see it again and Jaycee would do it. Yes I very much second that digging usually will cause the great B-500. Rita Jean

@tanza: Got ya…. and how nice of her to sit up and puke!!! I am lucky (knock on wood) all mine ride great... crate pads keep them from sliding around and they just sleep anyway.... Sure makes clean-up easier! I used to keep wipes in the car to clean her, esp. before shows! ew. I just layer plastic bags in the trash can, and tie 'em off as used, then toss when we get to where there's an outside trash can. I'd make video to show, but really, that'd be gross  She's really good in her harness, so it works out quite well. As I said, Keoki continues to be my car challenge in terms of how to best travel with him. But he loves going in the car in general.

Owning a basenji requires a good sense of humor and a large dose of patience and a willingness to do some creative thinking to convince the basenjis what you want is really the same thing as what they want. So true, never a dull moment with these dogs

Sahara does the same, she will stick her head through just enough to see you and then helps you get dry by licking. She loves to help out, and will take a bath pretty easy now. Daddy also took her with him to shower and she did good. We have also taken her in our boat with a lifepreserver of course and she liked it ok. Hubby put her in the river with him and she was fine with him. Yea, they do have the sweetest personalities, and we love our Sahara sooooooo much.

Hollie will hide her treats and her dog food. Her favorite hiding place is under MY pillow in the bed. She has tried to hide her entire food bowl by pushing one of her plush toys with her nose in an attempt to get the toy on top of her food bowl. Why doesn't she just use her mouth to pick it up and place it on the bowl? Silly dog!
