4 Basenjis at the dog park!

  • So the dog park i found has a website and there's a guy that is there every day taking pictures an posting them on line. i went the other day with Tayda and Lenny and there were 2 more basenjis there! A brindle male just like lenny and a red/white just like tayda! They got along famously and did tons of B500s all around the park! They are our new best friends!

    Pics posted here….

Anyone living in the Westchester, NY area - its great! and unlike other dog parks i've been to, the owners that i've met there are REALLY aware of their dogs and making sure all dogs are in line and everyone is playing nicely. There are a bunch of "regulars" that all know each other and each others dogs and are just a great bunch of folks and pooches.

I know some B-owners have issues with dog parks, y'all know i've had my share of issues in the past with Lenny being aggressive, but I learned how to manage that, and our 4 trips now to this park have totally positive experiences for all of us!

Apparently every friday in the summer they have bbq's in the small dog area (that no one uses). Looking forward to that….

Anyway, Enjoy the pics! "4 Basenjis!" :D

  • p.s. tayda and lenny have the sweaters on….

  • I am so glad you found a great dog park! A solid group of 'regulars' is wonderful, and really makes you feel safe knowing everyone cares, and will wade in and stop any activity before it turns bad. Finding a great park is a treasure, hope you enjoy many more outings with the kids.

I used Wisdom Panel for my assumed Basenji mix. It showed no basenji at all. My boy is 32 lbs and short hair. His DNA says he is 25% American Eskimo 12.5% Boston Terrier 12.5% Chow Chow 12.5% German Shepherd 12.5% Miniature Schnauzer 25% Breed Group-Sporting, Herding, Hound, Terrier. Having owned basenjis all my life I would say my boy has basenji in him by his personality and behavior regardless of what his dna says!!

@DebraDownSouth He's generally extremely quiet but he does yap(more like a small dog bark) at certain individuals.

Another possibility might be Rat Terrier. They do come in brindle, although that colour is out of favour. There is one in my neighbourhood that has a bit of a Basenji look to him, and his tail is very short.......not sure if it's natural or docked.

I looked up the dates for LGRA in August in Oberlin and I will on vacation that week in NC. I would like to meet up with you for a play date one weekend. Cody gets his staples out on Tues. (yeah) So after that I would be free most weekends until Aug 20. If you have suggestions on dog parks to go to let me know.

@Lovelace: Really? What ones? I don't know of any that have all the criteria? I've done extensive research on the breeds, and i'm curious I don't recall any. I think Pat means lots of dogs have one or more of these traits. Those three things all together MAY be an indication that the dog does have some basenji in it…but not for sure. Because the dog could be a boxer/husky mix...and end up with right color/markings, pointy ears, a curly tail, and have wrinkle on the forehead (lots of dogs have wrinkles around the face). Rat terriers are notorious for looking like Basenjis...but the shape of their head is slightly different, and the breed was founded using some Basenji way back. Another thing to remember is that after several generations of mixing, all dogs tend to go back to a natural or pariah dog shape...squarish, brown, pointy ears, slightly curled tail...that is just the natural phenotype of "dog"...so a dog might end up looking Basenji-ish even if there is no actual Basenji there. I am not refering specifically to the OP...that dog does look like it might have some Basenji in it..or Rat terrier...but it is REALLY hard to say for sure. It doesn't matter really, because everyone is welcome here...Basenji, mix, B-look alike...welcome...
