Training Brags

Basenji Training
  • They love agility but I have a great teacher who really understands sighthounds. She owns some of the top whippets and foxhounds in agility. They really do love the obstacles and doing them and mine cry for their turn at the course.

  • @Duke:

I'm curious if anyone has been successful with training your B's to Roll Over?? Both D&D make me feel I'm torturing them, so I give up on it.:o QUOTE]

Our puppy graduation is on Thursday, I have been working with Zuri on roll over. She isn't too bad at it. I just get her in a down, hold a treat by her nose and bring it around the side of her body which will make her roll over most of the time. Sometimes she turns her head to meet the treat on the other side instead of rolling…but I think she will get it eventually. She has the sit, down, stay, take it and leave it pretty good....but the loose leash walking....that's my struggle.

  • brenda, caesar has been loose leash walking for 5 years! he still pulls unless he knows I have treats. there is so much to look at!

  • We never go walking without treats at this point. But she wants to see everything and everyone! It is so hard to get her attention back when she has 'locked' onto something.

Wow!! Dash sits and that's it. He has to be the first dog I have had that I did not pursue training. He's to cute. Great job on your training.

Gee, someone should open a Graduation thread to show off all the graduates! Be sure to take a few pictures. Pet Smart puts a Grad Cap on the pups for pics. They look so cute.

Zuri must be real smart to roll over. I've done what you're talking about to kind of force them over - both won't take their eyes off the treat so rolling over is out.

Loose leash with Duke is impossible - we walk with a head collar. There is promise with Daisy. We're still working on it - she's being so good about it.

  • I am downloading pictures off my camera right now and charging the battery…She is graduating from Petsmart so the caps are ready. I have yet to figure out how the heck she will sit still for us to put it on her...gonna have to break out the really good treats!!!! I promise I will post some pics. Her 'trick' to graduate will be howling to Nelly Furtado....she does it all the time and I have the cd ready for tomorrow. If that fails (it won't) i have the high 5 or crawl that she can do for them. Who knew?? Such a smart critter!

    (aka proud mama)

  • As a proud mama of TWO crazy feisty tempermental loveable AND intelligent pooches…I just have to brag :D :D

TOPAZ & C3PO graduated from Training Level 1 for Feisty Dogs..Feisty is defined by leash lunging, growling, not friendly (dogs or people) dogs. They got their graduation diplomas & as proud parents it was very emotional for us! Well me :o more then DH

We've come a very long way with these loveable nutty dogs when I was literally TERRIFIED to walk them alone to the point where I now have confidence & control. Both my furbies can sit, down, stay, come here, & leave it (sometimes LOL :D ).

Our instructors recommended us for Level 2 for Feisty Dogs where we'll be working outside with 10/12 dogs. We had our first Level 2 class & once again our B's impressed the instructors with their calmness & attention!! not MY DOGS  are you for real??

Pics of the big day to come :D

C3 and Topaz, you've just graduated from level one "Feisty" training, what are you going to do next?

    We're going to Basenji Park!:D :D

  • WooHOOOOOOO! I'm teary, I'm so proud for you J! Excellent job C3PO & Topaz!!

Feels GOOD, doesn't it? I am right behind you jys1011. I've got to have that feeling pride soon too. Duke and Daisy can deliver if I put forth the effort with them. I absolutely must post their Grad pics here too. They are both scheduled - together - with their Intermediate training, beginning July 19th. I hope and pray the instructor has mercy on us :D . I could use a li'l extra help from instructor with two in the same class. My 9 yr old son is going with me to help with this accomplishment. (my DH doesn't want to participate - anyone have any tips to get him on board?!?)

:) Big kudos to you and your DH with C3PO and Topaz's accomplishment. :)

  • So would you guys recommend doing all of your dogs together in training, or do you have more success with one at a time?

    Congratulations!

In class, it can sometimes be distracting for my dogs to see their housemate but they usually ignore each other since working pays so well. Sophie finds all the other dogs in her class a distraction.

At home, I try to train individually and I ask for behaviors of them as a group. Like sit, down, or wait. They can be really competitive so when they see someone else is getting treats and they are not they really starting thinking how they can get them.

  • I've been thinking about this. I did pay and enroll Duke & Daisy in the 2nd Obedience class together. I suppose I can take one of them and then teach the other at home and practice them together - get a refund for 1 prepaid class. I'm not so worried about them in class together so much as I am about saving the money. Is that a good idea??

I would probably do that. But the benefit to taking them each to class is that they learn to do the behaviors in a distracting environment. The flip side to that is how on earth would you be able to train both dogs at the same time in the class?

LOL!! I was thinking that my son would come with me and train Daisy, while I train Duke. Duke is the toughest student - REALLY spastic. Everything is a distraction. Daisy is much calmer. So I should bring Duke to class and then go thru the same training exercises at home with Daisy. I agree that training in a distracting environment WITH instructor's help is best. But, yeah - I should save some $$ and only take one. Gasoline prices are killing my budget!

@Kosuzu: I will get into agility when he is a little older, his bones are still too immature for that yet. I would also like to get Khalani into becoming a "therapy" dog as he has a beautiful nature, He can't be assessed for that until he is at least 18 months old. You must tell me more about the "skateboard", does he ride it? Have you ever videoed your agility, I'd love to see that. There are a few youtube videos of Zest! doing agility. Just seach "Zest Agility" and the r/w little basenji is mine. Those are all from her Novice days. She's now in Excellent. We've had quite a few set backs, but she has achieved her excellent agility titles in AKC. You can see my other 2 here: https://www.basenji.org/BasenjiU/Activities/Agility/AOb/stacles.html All but the dogs on the table are mine. Zest is also the star of the Agility Manuevers videos. Hopefully, you'll be able to find a local agility class. There are lots of foundation work you can do with puppies before you start doing jumps and weaves. The other two (Digital the brindlewonderkid and Jet the trying) are retired, but have certainly done a lot. Therapy work is so rewarding! You'll love it. Z and I are off to the Alzheimer's facility tomorrow. Both my boys also really loved it.

He does only poop in his crate, no urine usually. I am trying to gradually get him to like his crate, but I do think it might be a lost cause. But yesterday I left for about three hours and left him in the kitchen. When I got back, I opened the door and looked down to see not only my cat waiting for me but my dog as well… He found a way to get out of the kitchen and have the run on my apartment. I now know why basenjis are called escape artists. I was happy to find that although he had an accident in the living room, he didn't destroy anything. But I won't count on one time to trust him alone. I am going to stick with the kitchen and try to make sure he can't get out.

Way to go Kobey, Kev and I are so proud of all you have done. I suppose we have to give much credit to those humans in your life like Pat and Anne, hugs to you all and we can't wait to hear more successful lure trial stories. Therese and Kevin (Kobey's proud co-breeders)

@lisatest: Does a puppy have soft poop and as the puppy gets older the poop becomes more solid? It has been a while since I had a puupy so I can't remember. No… a puppy should also have a solid poo...

@tanza: I think you are waiting too long. You should have two complete sets of shots before class. Waiting till they are 15/16wks you are missing critical socialization skills. Waiting for "all the shots" is pretty much old school these days. My pups go out even before that to things like lure trials… you just need to be careful and not let them "get" into anything like "old poop" laying around. I'm planning on taking her around the time of the 2nd shots if I can. But the problem is that the next round of puppy classes doesn't start till the last week of March, which would be around 14 weeks anyway. Maybe they will let me join the last half of the previous class but I'd have to check into that.

HA! We did the up& back method at my petsmart class. Jack is so flexible, he would actually follow the treat back with his head, until his head was almost lying on his back. I think what I finally had to do was push his butt down with one hand, while holding the treat in front of his face with the other. He got really good at it…now, he sits when I snap my fingers, when I say sit, or, my favorite, when I salute him. Good luck!
