Obedience class

Basenji Talk

  • Well EL D made it through his obedience class! Hooray! :)

I honestly thought he wouldn't make enough points (he hated going to class and would get stubborn in class even though he did well at home) but he really surprised me. He lost points on down/stay (wouldn't down and wouldn't stay) but shined on all the other commands. In fact, surprise surprise, his sit/stay was perfect! He sat with his eyes on me the whole time (1 minute) - when other owners would snap their fingers or coo their dog EL D would twitch but not move otherwise. I was really happy.

I was going to take a picture of him with his ribbon but he chewed it up before I could manage the camera :)

  • Congrats! It is amazing what basenjis can do when they want to.

  • good boy! Congrats

  • My Roo is also in a OC. I have to say he is at the bottom of the totem pole. He has such a short attention span, but he does pretty good at home. He understands very well what you are asking him to do. Then he decides to do something else. At the moment we are working on come which works about 50% of the time.

  • Congrats to you both! LOL..he chewed the ribbon up already!!!

Well, it was his. Congrats to the both of you. At my house, the green ribbons are mine, the colored ribbons go on the dog's crate.

  • awww! clever El D!!! my B goes to do training and I just moveed up a class but the next stage is off the lead and Kip isn't so goo at that…. unless it's stay/wait they are his best commands :D

  • She-Ra didn't do well on her sit/stays at all but took top honors on standing for inspection (letting a stranger run hands all over her, even checking teeth, without breaking stance). For a Basenji, that's pretty good. She also won for most improved. She's a charmer. :)

Every victory is a "great" victory…. congrats!

  • I can't stop laughing that El D chewed his ribbon even before you could snap a picture!

We are considering an obedience class for Cyrus. Even if he is not top of the class, maybe the class would teach him to at least consider doing what I ask.

  • Way to go El D!

@DexterDex: I checked the link and I think the closest class is a little over an hour away from here. I also talked to someone at Petsmart and they told me that I DID have to bring proof that Dexter had begun his vaccinations… I'd still like to go and watch a class there. By all means, go and see a class there. I think everyone should do this BEFORE they sign up for any dog class. You will get a feel for the trainer, whether or not they have assistants with them, how many dogs they allow in the class, and how much time is used for social interaction before the actual training begins. These things are really important. Looking back at where Kipawa did his first class (he graduated) I would not go back there, even though they are really well thought of. The head trainer there is just not my cup of tea. One of her assistants that did two classes out of the 6 was much better. Also, way too much time was spent on dog socialization prior to the beginning the actual training. Most of the dogs should have first been put into a puppy socialization class, not a training class. Lastly, the trainers website said that there would be a max of 8 dogs there. For our last two classes there were 12 and 14 dogs there. Really chaotic - not enough order in the class - and you could tell the dogs were being impacted by that.

@MacPack: Congratulations to you and Zoni! I love the description of the down, I remember Topper in puppy & adult obedience class, doing the same thing. The instructor would laugh and say that "down" was supposed to be a submissive posture, but he "attacked the earth" and was definitely NOT submissive…but got the job done HIS way! Basenjis need instructors with a sense of humor! Good thing Zoni had one like that too. Anne Thanks…and yes they have a good sense of humor and love Zoni too. I wish the conformation class teacher did though, but then I'm just not going to that one for now....

@BasenjiDiva: Cory always sounds like she's using profanity when she gets that way. Pat That would be Kristii but add in a little "spitting" with it…
