Hearing impaired basenji rescue

  • @sharronhurlbut:

I think I have found her forever home, crossed fingers, so will let you all know.
Thanks again for all the wonderful info this group has shared with me.
    YOU ALL ROCK!

Thats wonderful news Sharron, please let the new owner know about the forum also. Would love to see pictures of this girl.

Different note, do you know how she became deaf? Was it from injury or birth?

  • I really have no idea what caused her hearing issues.
I was talking to her foster mom about this today.
We have NO idea where she came from re breeder or lines, but she is so pretty the EBC breed club took her under their wing to help spay her and
    pay her expenses.
I don't think there is much deafness in basenji lines is there.
Not like white boxer and such, but then, not being a breeder, I don't know.
She had no dew claws and is very show "typy" so right now its just a mystery.

  • I am Melody's foster Mommy - she really is a dear. Not so aloof like most of our B's she is very sweet and personable with everyone. Lucky us we hit the jackpot on this girl, even though she's deaf and she does sometimes jump when caught unawares her reaction is not negative at all! Yipee!

Here is a shot of our lovely girl. She came into rescue with some liver problems and was very thin, she's slowly putting on weight though.

I can't figure out how to imbed the image so here goes =)

Oh, she will be at the EBC rescue booth sun at the Seattle Kennel Club show.
    Wearing her adopt me cape!
Come give her a pet and a treat.

  • Do any of the folks who bred know of b's who have hearing issues?

  • I'm Melody's foster not permanent Mommy lol She is a real sweetie though.

Anyone know if/how many of these puppies might be around still? The website listed 6 and shows 1 still available. I also read somewhere (another thread or forum, can't remember) that there may have been 2 litters for a total of ~12 puppies, but the site has only listed 6. Would love to hear from anyone who may have taken the time to visit the puppies or might have more info. We've reached out directly as well and are awaiting further info. EDIT: Nevermind, we found that the CO rescue isn't willing to send puppies this far east. We have found a pup elsewhere from a breeder.

I rescued a young Sheltie/Basenji mix many years ago from a Columbus OH shelter for BEAR-Basenji Education and Rescue. She was trouble for the shelter and was kept in a separate area. She loved to lure course and she also would go after balls and bring them back to you! Looked just like a Basenji but with longer fur and her tail was not tightly curled. Dr. Tracy used to joke that we could trim her and get an ILP number from AKC! She found an excellent home. Jennifer

I posted a new thread re 2 of these b's who are having issues in their foster home and need help. I will share it with you all. 2- 3 yr old b's need fosters/homes, from pm bust –------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a pair of the b's who were taken from the puppymill that closed. We really need a smart basenji home to foster and or adopt. Sharron I imagine they will be open to be moved to any near by states. Wilma (brindle) and Wanda (red and white), both three years old and from the SD group, are currently being fostered in central LA. They are very afraid of men and not doing well in their current foster home. If anyone in the southern states, TN or AR would be willing and able to foster them both together, please notify me. I would like to place them in a foster-to-adopt home if available. If you do not live in the area listed but can help with transportation to your location I will consider moving them out of the area. If you are traveling through LA and would not mind a couple furry passengers, let me know. They ride well in crates. :) :) :) Bumping this because BRAT NEEDS MONEY badly.. please folks, buy a calendar, buy one for friends for presents! Help support the rescue.:) :) :) @sharronhurlbut: Each year, BRAT sponsors a calendar photo contest. BRAT volunteers and adopters submit photos of their basenjis and the BRAT family then votes for their favorites. The winning photos are featured on a calendar which we sell to raise money to help rescue basenjis. Many of the dogs we rescue are featured on this calendar. This year, we had more than 400 entries. The voting for the 2007 calendar has just concluded and I am pleased to report that you can view the top fifty entries on our website at: http://www.basenjirescue.org/CalendarContest/default.asp After seeing these photos, we hope that you will order one of our calendars. The calendars are on glossy paper and are professionally printed. Jacque Holdaway has designed the calendar for the past few years and does an outstanding job–-we guarantee that you won't be disappointed. BRAT calendars sent to domestic addresses cost only $23.00, including shipping. Payment may be made by check or money order payable to BRAT, Inc. There is no limit on the number of calendars you may order. Buy a few and give to your friends and relatives! We will begin shipping calendars in October. We are only printing 750 calendars and when they are sold out we won't be able to get any more---so please order early to be sure you can get one. The calendar project is our biggest fundraiser of the year. All of the net proceeds from the project go directly to the dogs-no one in BRAT receives any salary or other compensation. Last year, we were able to pay vet bills for more than 40 dogs just from the money we made selling calendars. The order form is found at: http://www.basenjirescue.org/CalendarContest/calendarorder.asp Thank you for your continuing support!
