Basenji Family

Basenji Talk
  • I was thinking this morning how many of us are sort of like family related through our basenjis. Some more closely related with dogs that came from the same breeders, several here have close relatives to my Sherwood dogs. Others are more like cousins with dogs further back in the pedigrees that are related, like finding that Nicky and Querk are both related through Prune or that Nicky's maternal grandfather is a Serengeti dog so is related to Nike and Dallas. Anyway, just my Sunday random thought about our extended families.

  • If you go back far enough, most of our basenjis are directly related, because of how few dogs were brought out of Egypt.

  • That is what makes basenjis so special :) I would love to find out more dogs related to Dallas! I know I have his entire pedigree printout but of course the names don't mean much to me, being a non-breeding & non-showing individual. Haha

Isn't that funny! Prune must have distributed that nutty 'don't leave me in the kennel' gene ;)

True, except for western basenjis are down from dogs that were brought out of Central Africa…not Egypt.

It is true that all basenijs trace to a relatively small number of founders that were brought out of Africa from the Congo region not Egypt. My comments were specifically about the number of members of the forums whose dogs relate to each other within about 3-5 generations.

I think so. It is just so amazing when you talk about Querk how many traits he has in common with Nicky.

  • Not only is it fun that our dogs are related (even if only distantly) but I sure enjoy the commaraderie of this forum (not to mention the stories and information)!

  • SOOOOO when's the family reunion :D :D

Nexa says hi to "cousin" sophie. They share Avongara Rease of Brushy Run as a grandfather:D

  • And it looks like they both share the same loose curled tail. I always just tell people it is because she is so busy wagging it, it never learned how to curl.

  • So…kinda like "Six Degrees of Separation" (or fewer), huh? Very cool.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!

I really appreciate all of the replies… the advice & suggestions are invaluable. With everything in perspective, I feel I lot better, and I can't wait to meet some Basenjis! I think we may go meet some this week, and we're both really excited! Thanks again! Carrie

Joey's breeder is Eric Williams in Michigan. I just met Joey's great aunt who is so precious! She is 4 and a tri. Eric is dogsitting Joey for a few days over the holiday and even tho I miss Joey so much already (I dropped him off at noon), I know he is in good hands! I hope Joey will want to return home!!!
