We forget that others don't know….

Basenji Talk
  • The other evening Dh was having a meeting here of our homeschool sports club committee, and the dogs were all sleeping in various places. Keoki had a nice spot on their little chairs, Jazzy was in the spare bedroom, Gypsy was at my feet as always.

The meeting was clipping right along, lots of business, lots of laughter.

Jazzy came out to sleep by the pellet stove and as she approached Keoki, he let go with a n-a-s-t-y Tasmanian Devil noise.

The meeting stopped cold and the room got deadly silent as all the committee members froze and turned to stare, waiting for something awful to happen. They all looked to Dh, then back to the dogs who had since quieted down and were both settling in to go back to sleep.

We had to laugh at the expressions on the human faces! It was almost like they were either terrified or horrified. Dh had to laugh and just tell them, "Oh, that's just the noise they make at each other. Nothing's going to happen."

"You mean they do that a lot?" "I've never heard a noise like that before!"
    etc.
It was just funny to us because we don't really even notice it much anymore.

  • My girl B does that all the time too to my boy B. I have been on the phone and she let the evil growl thing rip. The people on the other end of the conversation are like is everything ok do we need to send help.:D I am wondering what they are talking about. I am just so used to her. My boy B totaly ignores her and goes about his business. Her bark(growl) is definately worse than her bite.;)

  • Our dogs often squabble or play really rough in the back yard. Sometimes they are really loud. I can just imagine what the neighbors must think!

  • I know what you mean, that the noise my two furkids make when they're squabbling. Almost always, they go after each other to see who gets my or DH's attention when we walk in the door. Doesn't matter who is with us. It looks and sounds like a massive fight - but it's over quick - I tend to ignore them as they work it out because I'm used to it. Most people aren't used to it - it is very scarey sounding! I tell the the occasional human in witness, "Ah - They're just having a disagreement…that's how they are."

  • Enjoyable story, I can even picture people faces ;) :D

  • We hear so many weird noises coming from ours, sometimes it sounds like there's an Exorcism going on downstairs:eek: ….......then there's the Cewbacca sound Max makes....Willy's chimp imitation...Cleo's wolverine sounds.......ya got to love em!:D

The Little Af Boy may be the most vocal Basenji I've ever come across......he's always saying something.....so cute:)

wow! nic memories! Here on my city my sister cant belive that people even stop theirs cars to ask "what breed is your dog"? some people get pictures with the cellphone or with their tablets so a walk with my girls on the downtown is a secure chit chat with the people. A remember 3 ladies, they were so amazing! Maca dont put so much atention on people specially girls, but those ladies was talking to Maca saying she was sooo pretty sooo sweet sooo everything and Maca start to bend those ears and make noises they were more happy and carry on and Maca more and more sweet Whilw They was saying Maca was soo sweet and bla bla and i was thinking.. ha! she is a little naughty and sometimes so dominant.. but that day Maca plays her role to perfection. She deserves a Oscar.. Other day she was confused with a male chihuahua, a lady ask if we can breed our dogs, i said, well is a SHE and is not a chihuahua, the woman start to apologize i dont care well.. i dont like Maca be confused with a male dog, but was funny at the end. But on general people use to think they are like foxies or pitbull or little deer. I said to some kids that i was ironing the tale all days to get curled. They believe it and i was worried they try to iron his own dog, so i said that noooo! that was natural and ironing a dogs tale is a ugly idea. Oh one day i lef Maca with the policeman at the bakerys door ( he was at my sight anyway) and when i was out i found the man with several people asking him if was a police dog or some kind of new police dog because looks so nice and so naughty hahha The poor man have no words and just was smiling while the people was taking picture of him and the dog. lol So the last time that i walked with my sister she was wow! i cant believe it.. the people stoped to ask what breed is.. Yes, my girls are used to some fame.. and i like they socialize with the kids.. not so much with the grown people and with so many thief getting his eyes on pure breed doggies not so nice but well… i said the are naughty some times.

My 2 will also find things to "get" my attention if they are not the center of my attention, when I get home. I hope you can leave yours out when your gone. it makes things so much easier for everyone.

I use a baby gate in the hallway to seperate the bedrooms/bathrooms from the rest of the house. The 16yr old cat lives in the bedrooms. My B's have the rest of the house. I had to experiment with gates though. The lattice kind my B girl used like a ladder. Stuck her little paws in the openings and climbed. I now have a vertical slat installed to the wall. I had to have extra pieces attahced to the bottom b/c she would wiggle her shoulders under and then stand up popping the hindges from the wall.

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
