  • Quick Question? Do Any Of Your B's Take The Squeakers Out Of The Toys You Give Them..?? There Is Not A Stuffed Toy In Our House That Has Any Stuffing Left In Them (but She Still Hauls Them All Over) And I Have Found The Little Plastic Squeakers All Over The House!! Too Funny!

  • all stuffed animals are destuffed including the squeaker. I think that may be the ultimate prize. I try to get my squeaky toys from Big lots or some place that is very cheap since they are destroyed in minutes but boy does he love destroying them.

  • Thats a good idea because I can tell you we have spent some money on toys. It makes me laugh that she still plays with them even after the stuffing is gone. She also enjoys taking the ears and legs off of them and carrying the legs around like its a trophy. They are funny dogs for sure!!

  • Ditto with the stuffed squeaky toys. I worry that one will swallow the squeaker, so I watch when the toy is destuffed enough for me to get the squeaker out to throw it away. The rest is for their enjoyment. I expect to pickk up stuffing. The poor destuffed fabric is the real prize. They play tug-of-war, chase and race all over the house with it. My 2 goofy dogs. :D

  • Dallas doesn't have strong enough teeth yet to unstuff his stuffed toys. He tries pulling them apart though but can never quiet rip them. I guess that's the next stage I have to look forward to? :p lol

  • Yes I worried about the squeaker too but I try to pick them up as quick as I can.

  • We only do supervised play with plush toys, then they are taken away afterwords

  • When EL D gets a squeaker toy, that's the first thing he goes after. Once he gets it out, I'll grab the plastic, otherwise he'll chew on that too. So far he's always spit the chewed up plastic but some squekers have a tiny insert and I'm afraid he'll swallow it.
I have to laugh at the toy advertisements … our toys all have squeaker that will keep you dog occupied for days or our toys are indestructable ... obviously these manufacturers have never seen basenjis and toys !!

  • I have yet to see a toy she has not destroyed!! I get the squeaker away as quick as possible also. She does'nt seem to interested in it once its out.

  • My floor is, at any given time, littered with dead bodies, fuzzy guts, loose arms, legs, ears. At my feet currently is a dead hippo and a dead Santa.
Very sad. We have a basket behind our couch where the bodies are stored until someone wants to drag them around again.

This place always looks like there's just been a massacre. But they love the de-stuffed critters as much as the new ones.

  • I think I have that same dead Santa. You and I seem to have the same sense of humor. You make me laugh the way you describe things, because we also have a basket filled with limp and lifeless toys that we just can't seem to throw away. And to think you have 2 B's and I only have one!!!

  • mine do the same- there is always stuffing covering the floor(until i clean it up and they do it again!) i buy the ones from walmart that are 88 cents. that way i can buy a ton and not care they all get torn up! and mine try to eat the squeekers..

  • The only time my floor is clear of stuffing and dead toy parts is the few minutes before I start weekly vacuuming and the half hour afterwards. I put all his toys (even the ones I wouldn't call toys anymore) in a box by the chair and EL D waits until a little after the vacuuming is done before he starts to pull them all over the place (except never into the bathroom - funny).

Yes, we have many toys that shouldn't be called toys anymore; those things that normal people would have long ago thrown away. But then, we're not normal people, we are Basenji owners. :D

  • So True!!!!!

  • Magnum usually has no interest in his stuffed toys, unless there's a loose thread/seam, then he'll rip them apart.

Otherwise, he just wants you to leave them alone. They're his and only his.

  • The picture is soooooo cute!! Thats how my house looks all the time!

  • Those camera eyes make him look like a devil dog (oh wait that's what some people call basenjis :D)

  • Ramsey just likes to carry his toys around never tears them up, but layla loves to tear them up when were home on the weekends i refuse to vacumn til sunday because she goes crazy, we also have a basket of toys in our office, too bad we cant teach the pups to pick up after themselves, and caira isnt really fond of toys unless its tug of war….it fun to watch 3 b's fighting ovr the same toy.....it gets noisy too lol

  • my dogs surgically open the back seam of the hedgehog and dig out the squeaker - then the stuffing and then throw around the empty fleece carcass as a toy - looks to me like a kid with a new toy that goes and plays with a box!

I see your post was back in Jan. so I hope you have your new basenji settled in. I also adopted a beasenji in Jan. She is my second. I adopted a 5 year old to be with my 3 yr. old, who had had 2 litters in the past and was bred for a 3rd one, but didn’t get pregnant. So the breeder, the same breeder our boy came from, decided to let her go to a forever home. I had to wait quite a while for her to be ready and I felt just like you. I couldn’t wait! I kept texting the breeder questions, request for photos, etc. When we picked her up she seemed comfortable with us right from the start. She has been a wonderful addition to our family, a good match for our 3yr. old boy. He’s a toughie but I think he’s met his match with her. He’s so much happier with his own friend. They love to be together. I hope your new pup is adjusting just as well as mine. Have fun. I think they make us laugh every day. Yes, you have to be on your toes with these guys, you have to make them a big part of your life. They can never just be a fixture. They are work but it’s worth it all. 3 years ago I was a newbie but not anymore, and I’m loving this wild ride.

So far Shaye's favorites are the "no stuffing" animals with squeaky toys at each end - she has a squirrel and a beaver - she runs around squeaking them - strange thing, when her puppy teeth were out and she was getting her big teeth, for a while she had trouble making them squeak and she would toss them in the air and drag them around running full-out, then jump on them and try to get them to squeak again. She also has a set of hard plastic keys on a ring that she enjoys tossing and chasing (and getting us to toss for her of course. Her favorite game - reverse fetch.

You could also try the small RC cars. The B's really like it as well as this little helicopter thing I have. They also like my furry blue pig-but they can't have that one!!

lol… Jill, my dog has destroyed TWO talk to me treat balls. I still love them though, they do last at least a few months. My guy has figured out how to get the recorder out though - and how to chew it to bits.

:) For the most part the only toys that hold up in my house are kongs, the "plush" toys made for dogs who destroy do last for a few weeks, but thats about it. I get the "mean kitty" and "mad cow" dolls for them every so often, and there are these wabba toys that you can get that are made from recycled firehose material. They all have fun chewing and chasing these toys. I have a couple of "tough dog" toys that are sorta like fabric frisbees, that have lasted for almost a year! the squeekers have since died in both of them, but the pups still like to tug them around, and have me throw them. I keep a lot of recreational bones and such available in the house, and some cow hooves which take them awhile to chew on. But its hard to find good bones for them because they can not be beef. If I get them without any marrow, or any meaty material than we can have them, but otherwise we have to steer clear because my Masi is allergic to beef. So when I get marrow bones, I actually take all the marrow out, and wash the bones before they get them. It's sorta sad really, she loves them so much! kim~
