PA Basenji Park Summit

Basenji Talk

  • My experience with talk forums has been fun, educational and entertaining. One of the extra perks to the forum experience is that you can meet new people and share experiences. I've taken the opportunity to contact some forum members that I noticed have dogs that are related to one or more of my dogs. I found someone that has a Basenji that is related to one of mine right in my own PA back yard…….red & white furever. RWF has a basenji "Stormie" that is an Uncle to our Cleo…….both are Susan Coe bred dogs. After an exchange of some basic information, RWF and I decided we needed to call a PA Basenji summit…..asap.

On Sat. night, red & white furever and her friend another Basenji owner/lover, stopped by Basenji Park for a PA Summit. It was an exchange of information, stories, ideas, and it was great fun. We found ourselves saying, "my B does that too"……more than once! The similarities of the related dogs was very interesting, Uncle Stormie and Cleo share some similar traits.
So there we where, myself and my Family and some new found Basenji friends enjoying our favorite subject…..curly tailed dogs.

I would encourage others to try to meet, whether it be at a dog show or similar event or a face to face meeting at each others home……..it was rewarding for me. There are some others on the forum I plan on meeting in the future.

Thank You Red & White furever, for having the courage to meet with all of us at Basenji Park strictly on faith…..it was fun and I am all the richer from the experience.

  • I think that is wonderful that you all had a chance to meet! In my small town there are no other Basenji's that I am aware of. Word does travel fast, though, and I have had everyone from mail carriers to a mechanic drop by to see Giz because they had never seen a B in person (5 people in the last year). Good for you guys for hanging out and letting the B's play!

  • HEY  how come the neighboring state friends weren't invited???…Ok next African Clan Summit I am THERE!! ;)

How exciting that you guys got to meet. It must have been tons of fun. Did ya take any pics??

I was born in NJ, we will have our A. C. Summit in Edison J:D .

We did have a great time, RWF and friend where very well versed in all things Basenji, I'm sure we all gained something from the experience. We all gained some new friends!;)

I do have some nice pics of RWF with four of five dogs cuddled around her…...I'll leave that up to her if she'd want them posted.

  • It sounds like fun! You are quite the social butterfly, BB! I'd love to join you one day, but Nala wouldn't like it…I can just see her now...stiff legged and hackles up...not that she would **dare **act up in Basenji Park…not with your pack surrounding her!! LOL!
Today she snapped at my neighbor who was dropping off an invitation! Nice, huh?
Free Basenji...lots of incentives to go with!!

It was fun S and you are always welcomed to stop on by!

I'd be up for that little Tri, but how's your neighborhood going to survive without that little welcome wagon. :D

It's one of those days…don't be surprised if the FedEx Home truck pulls up!

    Bring it!

Cleo will straighten him out:D :D

  • I had such an amazing time on Saturday evening meeting the creators of Basenji Park, and seeing it all first hand! I was blown away by the dogs - they're all so beautiful (Or barooteefull in 'senji speak! :) ). It was truly a pleasure to meet Cleo, Stormie's relative. They shared quite a few similarities and quirks - if not for Cleo's stripes and girl gender, I'd have sworn I was with my Stormie dog! :) All the dogs were so sweet and I could've (and probably did!) spend hours just petting Jasper - he's got such a soft coat! And the baroos and yodels! I got a hoot out of actually hearing vocal b's seeing as how Stormie is a "Silent Bob" kind of dog. :)
And the hosts - some of the nicest people I've ever met, and I look forward to maintaining a friendship with the whole family. Everyone was so welcoming and warm! It was truly a wonderful evening!
And Mr. Basenji Park, thank-you for sending the pictures my way. I picked one to post, and I hope it's OK with you! :)

  • Youngandtired and I got to meet, she was up in my area and met me at the dog park. I didn't get to meet her baby but the next time that she comes up with her I plan to meet up with her.

It is very cool to meet up with someone you chat with all the time. It was also nice to know that she wasn't some crazy internet stalker murderer like my husband told me to watch out for! LOL! (My husband is deployed and I told him that I was meeting up with someone off of the Basenji Forum and he gave me the be careful lecture)

I would love to meet up with more of our B friends online.

  • Yea, I had a great time meeting ChaseandZahrasMom, and also relieved that she was a nice military wife, just like me. Retired now, the wives do not get enough credit for doing all they do, it is not easy being left home while the hubby is away. My son is also in the Marines and he was in Iraq last year so I know it is hard on her. She took me to a dog park with her babies, and I got to see what it was like. I will most definitely meet up with her this Spring so Sahara and her babies can meet. At one point we thought our B's could be related, we got them from the same Pet Shop at around the same time. But after more talking we found that her B is older than my B. Darn!!!!!

  • Very nice ladies, kudos to you both. My hat is off to all that serve and those that are in support of them….....Thank You all.

I think this is a good time to thank the creators of this Forum that provides us all with this venue to be able to interact with each other and share our favorite passion….........Basenji's!

A big Thank You to our forum Founders! Job well done.

  • BBOY-WOO HOO Luv the artistic work with the smileys :) ha ha!

And hats of to you military wives. I honestly admire you because I know I couldn't do it. CandZ I hope your hubby comes home soon.

I too am looking forward to meeting some people around here. We are such a great bunch! :D :D

  • Great picture…I was thinking...how many Basenjis and other puppies can you fit on a chaise (or chair and ottoman)?
Nala has redeemed herself today, but maybe you should offer a Basenji boot camp? Cleo and Nala need to meet!

Gee, I made some room for Nala's kennel in with the others and now you say she's redeemed herself??? I'll keep the kennel handy, it's just a matter of time.

  • Good idea…I know she'd be loved, though! My kids would have to follow, though. How are you at diapers?? Maybe "Basenji Park and Daycare"?

I diapered many a butt in my day.:D I wanted a liitle girl bad and got two boys.

    A Tri B and a daughter all in one fell swoop! :)

  • Glad you all could meet up. I guess corresponding over the months kind of makes us feel like we know one another. It's so cool to meet the face behind the name. But, BBoy and RWF - you forgot to say "CHEESE!" :D LOL :D I know, it's all about the Basenjis. Thanks for sharing your visit.

And yes, my hat's off to the founder of this forum. Me, Duke and my family have all benefited as the information received have colored our world about the life and day living with Basenjis.

    Admin - Thank you! :)

  • i am a military wife too! my husband left 8 days ago for an eight month deployment (navy), this is the longest one we have had to endure. (one of the reasons i got fender in the first place-i still have someone to snuggle!)

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

We are in a town house with no yard, so Blaze gets stuck on a long leash. I make it up to him by taking him out to the farm every other weekend, so he runs free on a 1/4 section of land with the farm dog. He sleeps for three days when we get home.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
