Sick B

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Maybe you could call the vet for a consult?

  • I would call the vet and explain the situation and maybe call a second vet as well. It does sound like something he ate except for the lethargic part.

  • Usually when a dog's appetite just suddenly disappears for no reason–it's not because the food isn't tempting enough--I don't think trying to entice him with other food is the answer.

  • When was he last on the Rimadyl?

Loss of appetite and diarreah could be a sign of something very serious. It may be something like a stomach bug but it could be a blockage or it could be something else that would only show up in bloodwork.

  • And Rimadyl can and does cause a host of problems if used too much…. and especially on a young pup like you have....

If he is not eating then he has nothing to poop.... most important is that he drinks and that he doesn't vomit.... if he doesn't show improvement by tomorrow, I would certainly be off to the Vet...

And if he starts to vomit, you could have an emerency situation if he has a blockage....

  • Yeah, he has been off the rimadyl for about 3 weeks now. I did get him to eat something. I made about 3/4 C brown rice and grilled ground turkey and he ate it all quickly, he just wont eat the rest of his dry food. He has not vomited and after he stopped eating has only let out almost solid liquid from his rear end, but now that he is eating, I feel a lot better.

  • The same thing happened to one of my dogs when he was about one - we never got to the vet because he improved, and I don't want to discourage you from going to the vet, but Willie won't eat if he has an upset stomach - if your dog has diaharrea (sp?) he probably has an upset stomach. It's never happened to Willie again as bad, but anytime his digestion is off, his eating goes off.

Good luck, and glad to hear he ate a little.

Liquid out the rear always worries me–that is heavy duty diahhrea. It could be that he has an intenstinal bug that he needs antibiotics for. You should also keep an eye out for dehydration.

  • yeah, his drinking hasn't changed at all. He still drinks a bowl of water about twice a day plus he has a water bottle in his cage that I don't keep a track of.

  • Yay, there doesn't seem to be a need for the vet. Today was good and tomorrow will be better. Medjai started the day with a tiny bit of brown rice and the turkey bits picked out of the rice. Then he had some just plain beef also cooked plain and then later yet ate some of his kibble. He also had a only really soft poop. I never thought it would be so good to see him poop. He should be just fine, although I still have no idea what was wrong.

Unfortunately for us Maia has never done well with chicken, she loves it and eats it but it gives her diarrhea and seems to mess up her over all health. We did blood work again and her liver enzymes decreased by 30% which is great! Her actual health though is not so good so that is bad. We can get her to eat which is good, but the food control is not great salmon, ham(boiled a few times to remove the salt), breaded cauliflower, Mac and cheese. Whatever we can get her to eat. It’s crazy! We have her booked with a chiropractor to check her nerve function and we are ready to get prednisone going if it is ibd. We are working closely with our vet daily, she currently is on metronidazole and amoxicillin and gabapentin. Thursday I thought we were going to lose her and she has rallied. I hate optimism as I don’t do well with a broken heart but I am hoping for the best right now. She is on 2 billion probiotic per day as well. Every bite of food I can get into her I think, ok 1 more day at least. If I have to spend all day hand feeding her, I will. She is finally sleeping and twitching a little less! She is going up and down stairs ok, not great but ok and she is no longer falling over. We are far from out of the woods but I have seen some small improvements. Thank you all for your words, encouragement, advice and stories of what you have gone through. It is tremendous to me how kind you are. Thank you for taking some time out of your day and trying to help! We so appreciate it. Mai Mai means the entire world to us and every word, suggestion, or story we take into account and thank you so much for being such a loving wonderful community. With lock down and a sick pup we feel quite overwhelmed, so thank you!

@debradownsouth said in B with diabetes: Dogs get type 1, cats generally get type 2. While you're correct that dogs usually get Type One and cats Type 2, either can get either. Bummer regardless.

If you don't trust the vets you are seeing, please get her to a university vet for a second opinion. Have you talked to any of the other owners of the litter, or is she a rescue? When kennel cough is really bad, it can take months to clear up and the cough go away. She could also have allergies affecting her at night.. where does she sleep? Can you change where she sleeps to see if it's better?

I am so sorry, Tollers are such delightful little dogs. I've had the good fortune to meet several and always liked them. You and yours are in my thoughts/prayers.

Gosh - Hope the vet helps Senji feel better. Duke gets a bath whenever he gets dirty - in summer, once a month. He's 1 yr. old. Right now, being winter - he doesn't get dirty because the ground is frozen. I don't know what would be a normal bath schedule for Basenjis. Sending a big wish to Senji for healing health.
