• I would like some help and advice before shelling the money out for the vet. Two days ago, Medjai was his normal self. He willingly ate breakfast and dinner and had notmal bathroom breaks. Yesterday, he wouldn't eat anything all day and had solid water diharrea. This morning, the same thing, but he did take some of his food and jump on my bed with it. All he is doing is staring at it though.

I was looking to see if you had any ideas on things to try to get him to have an appetite as I am more than willing to go to the vet, but can't usually afford it so try to manage before hand, as I end up taking him a lot and it usually isn't anything , or at least very minor that I probably could have figured it out on my own.

  • While a trip to the Vet is best, because sure as anything, the one time you don't think it is serious… it is...
However you might want to read through this thread

  • OH gosh I'm so sorry your little boy is ill :( Could it be something he ate?? Is he drinking water?? Have tried homemade food? Some smelly cheese??

Unfortunately it sounds like the vet may be your best bet to figure out what's wrong with him. It's hard to diagnose just from those symptoms alone.

Good luck & I hope the pooch is better soon.

  • Yes, he is drinking water and peeing. I have tried putting some penut butter in his kong which is usually a treat for him and he devours it and spends all his time with it until it's gone, but now he just sits there. When i play with him, he's still the same, but he just doesn't eat or poop. I am going to have to go to the store to get some food i can cook for him.

Yeah the only problem with the vet is that I'm broke to begin with and usually take him to the vet about every 6-8 weeks for something or another.
I just wen to get him rimady again the third week of Dec. and get him nuheart and started that the 15th of this month because I wanted to get him settled with his sprain and get him feeling better first. In september i had to go the vet for a checkup and some rimady the first time for his other leg he sprained again. I can't let him play with my parents mutt unattended outside anymore. although he LOVES it, him vs. a 65lb bernese mix is not the best idea when Medjai gets excited and runs around and then into the mutt.

I really hope that Medjai gets better on his own, but will take him to the vet if necessary. Any ideas on other things i can try? I'm going to give him boiled turkey and brown rice and see if he eats any.

  • Maybe you could call the vet for a consult?

  • I would call the vet and explain the situation and maybe call a second vet as well. It does sound like something he ate except for the lethargic part.

  • Usually when a dog's appetite just suddenly disappears for no reason–it's not because the food isn't tempting enough--I don't think trying to entice him with other food is the answer.

  • When was he last on the Rimadyl?

Loss of appetite and diarreah could be a sign of something very serious. It may be something like a stomach bug but it could be a blockage or it could be something else that would only show up in bloodwork.

  • And Rimadyl can and does cause a host of problems if used too much…. and especially on a young pup like you have....

If he is not eating then he has nothing to poop.... most important is that he drinks and that he doesn't vomit.... if he doesn't show improvement by tomorrow, I would certainly be off to the Vet...

And if he starts to vomit, you could have an emerency situation if he has a blockage....

  • Yeah, he has been off the rimadyl for about 3 weeks now. I did get him to eat something. I made about 3/4 C brown rice and grilled ground turkey and he ate it all quickly, he just wont eat the rest of his dry food. He has not vomited and after he stopped eating has only let out almost solid liquid from his rear end, but now that he is eating, I feel a lot better.

  • The same thing happened to one of my dogs when he was about one - we never got to the vet because he improved, and I don't want to discourage you from going to the vet, but Willie won't eat if he has an upset stomach - if your dog has diaharrea (sp?) he probably has an upset stomach. It's never happened to Willie again as bad, but anytime his digestion is off, his eating goes off.

Good luck, and glad to hear he ate a little.

Liquid out the rear always worries me–that is heavy duty diahhrea. It could be that he has an intenstinal bug that he needs antibiotics for. You should also keep an eye out for dehydration.

  • yeah, his drinking hasn't changed at all. He still drinks a bowl of water about twice a day plus he has a water bottle in his cage that I don't keep a track of.

  • Yay, there doesn't seem to be a need for the vet. Today was good and tomorrow will be better. Medjai started the day with a tiny bit of brown rice and the turkey bits picked out of the rice. Then he had some just plain beef also cooked plain and then later yet ate some of his kibble. He also had a only really soft poop. I never thought it would be so good to see him poop. He should be just fine, although I still have no idea what was wrong.

@debradownsouth said in B with diabetes: Dogs get type 1, cats generally get type 2. While you're correct that dogs usually get Type One and cats Type 2, either can get either. Bummer regardless.

I too am sorry for not seeing this thread sooner and hopefully the poster will return. My Basenji had some teeth removed and the vet prescribed Carprofen as the follow up antibiotic. My Basenji turned out to be allergic to Carprofen which caused her liver to fail. I went through the same scenario you are describing. She gradually quit eating over the course of several days and then her water consumption started to go down. The eating had me worried since she had an excellent appetite upon return from the vet and the final purging of the anesthesia from her system. Nevertheless, her condition started to degrade. I followed her outside and watched her urinate. Her urine was a very bright yellow. I suspected then a liver issue. Once back inside she was shivering - off to the vet we went. LIver panel blood work up showed very high on specific indicators for failing liver. Vet prescribed Denamarin (containing SAM-e and silybin). SAM-e helps protect liver cells from cell death and aids in cell repair and regeneration. The Vet also started fluid injections. Fluid injections were everyday for two weeks. My Basenji showed a remarkable response to the fluid injections becoming much more her normal self even after the first day. She hated the injections and I could hear her cry when receiving them at the vet (believe me that will tear you up). But she was doing better and she (me) were going to have to tuff this out. Also a different antibiotic was prescribed to prevent liver infection during recovery. The Denamarin comes in dosages based on weight (medium for us). It is the size of a large human like solid oblong vitamin pill. Instructions want you to give it on an empty stomach and preferably not to cut it or place in something similar to a pill pocket however you can if necessary. My Basenji would not take that size (can't blame her). Cutting and disguising it did not work either. I was frantic and got the SAM-e in powder form. I couldn't slip her that either. All though some folks had success with peanut butter and liverwurst. I finally after three days had to have the vet pill her along with her fluid treatments. A week later another blood sample and her liver panel indicators were coming down. The pilling would last for a month and it took two people to get the pill down her. The important part is - she fully recovered from the liver failure. She is 13 1/2 yrs old. My experience after having 5 Basenjis is that the breed is sensitive to medications (anesthesia also). Many of the medications work just fine in most other breeds and mixes. The vet, if not that experienced with the Basenji, must be cautioned. Mine was not. Before accepting any medication have the vet go over any contraindications with you and to double check their resources for potential side effects when dealing with Basenjis. They may switch to something else if a medication has a bad track history with Basenjis. Know what to watch for should your Basenji start to react in a non-positive manner. The poster did not indicate if there were medications in play when the dog started showing degenerating conditions. I sincerely hopes this helps in some way and helps other Basenji owners

Typically I have also advised those with dogs that 'appear' to have fanconi but are not basenjis or are mixes - to also have their vet fax the labs to Steve Gontos - he seems to have a handle on the chemistry of the disease in general that is helpful to those no B people

My male does this every few weeks too, I have yet to find out the actual reason, but maybe I'll try feeding him more often. I have been feeding him only in the mornings, with treats throughout the day. He only throws up in the morning before breakfast if I am lazy about getting out of bed by 7.

An update on Ben's condition. He had his teeth cleaned this morning and the vet had to remove several teeth. A large tooth in the back of the mouth had a cavity that went all the way to the root. He never lost his appetite during the whole ordeal or seemed to have any sensetivity of his mouth. I hope this is the end of the suffering he was going through. He was a rescue dog so we don't have the previous owners records as to dental care he had in the past. You can be sure he will be monitored from here on out for any sign of tooth decay or tarter build up. Thanks to everyone who replyed to my inquiry on Basenji health.

Yeah I can't believe he's allergic to chicken.
