• Have there been any studies done to see if Fanconi can possibly be avoided or postponed in probably affected dogs by applying part of the protocol prior to diagnosis?

I mean, if one were to give a probably affected dog 1 Pet-tab Plus, 1/2 Pet Cal every day, with maybe 1 amino fuel, Centrum tab, and1/2 tab sodium bi-carb every week or so, making sure the dog has a good protein level in the diet…. something along those lines..... might that possibly affect the onset of the condition?

Just wondering....... would it hurt to try?

  • There have not been any studies into what treatment may be useful to pre-symptomatic dogs.

Some have suggested that dogs that have tested Probably affected get blood gases done yearly in addition to the monthly strip testing since the blood gases may catch the disease earlier.

  • Yes, I believe that doing Blood gases as soon as possible to have a base line is one of the best coursing of action. I know that some people that have had their Basenjis DNA come back as probably affected have done so and seen some changes from normal, but the dog is not spilling.
And you can always ask Dr. Gonto if he thinks any supplements might help…. in general.

Well, I thought I had… I did email Dr. Gonto, but my computer started doing some very strange things when I hit send so it's very possible the message was never actually sent.

    I will try again.

  • Not sure how Dr. G feels about doing blood gases before they start to spill… but I think it is a good thing...

I would never take a chance with heart worm... I use NuHeart that is just for heart worm... small pill once a month... we do not have issues with heart worm in NoCal but I do not take a chance. I use it year round. In the area that there is frost/frozen for the winter you can use it just in the spring/summer/fall months. For fleas/ticks I use frontline but only when I see fleas... again in NoCal not too much of an issue.. I need to use it maybe about twice a year and only when need or if I am traveling with the pups.

@Patty: smharr4 - the ISBN no is 1-57954-057-0. There is also a web site which I've never checked out (don't know why) - www.petspartofthefamily.com. I find it a very useful book, full of ideas for natural treatment of dogs and acts. Yay, it's on Kindle… I think I just found my Christmas reading...

Swimming was my first thought as well. I also recalled a post from WilysMom when Wily was going through therapy to regain leg strength and make Wily use all his legs equally, and she was advised to walk Wily in sand. (Wilys accident and injuries were totally different but it made sense to me. Walk in a medium that keeps the dog a little off balance so all legs are used, and one is not favored.) You could also try using glucosamine treats once a day or so as a preventative.

Thanks to all who have put questions and answers forward. I'm kind of glad I pushed the issue, I have learned much more about the syndrome from the people who actually have the experience. As Jason stated, there are a lot of questions that people have who have never had an afflicted dog. And as Andrea states, some do better on the protocol than others, while some have different organs affected over time. It's all a learning process for us. And, it opens our eyes to some of the more difficult aspects of Fanconi. This is the part of the education that I wanted-some real discussion on living with them. I'm sorry if I've offended anyone, but I really want to know. I guess I have an enquiring mind and feel a need to understand.

I have used it for about 3 months now. Seems to be doing good so far. I was Leary at first, I'm so used to the oral heart worm preventive !! Doesn't seem like something that goes on the skin could work as well. My Vet says it's great and she has been using it and advantage on her dogs since it came out.

@nala121498: I'm glad to know that he's progressing nicely and you are finding ways to adjust to it. Still keeping you guys in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery! Bless you Nala, Today has been a hard day for the whole family. Mom is having difficulty with her arthritis and the pain is very strong. I am ready with the pain meds as needed. Beeji must have gotten up full of the devil as he has been into waaaaaaaaay too many things today. We started out with the food battle. I put the mixed dry and wet into the bowl. He watched me as If he was the prince and had to say "No that doesn't suite me, take it away. Well after 20 minutes, I took up the food snacks. Anything he could reach such as rawhides etc were put away. We get dressed, leashed and ledding and are finally ready to go. We walked a double amount this morning and by the time I got him back t the house, I was exhausted but he was still pretty fiesty. We decided to head to the back yard where I can toss his floppy disk and he can chase it, growl at it, shake it in that death toss and then he flips it up and runs after it again. When we went in for lunch. He tried the begging route but Mom and I had talkd aobut how to reach him first and find a job fo him and
