  • Not to mention Bull dogs probably clinch the title of most difficult to breed! They have to not only be inseminated (cannot do it the way nature intended) but also always have to have c-sections. It is no wonder their pups are so darn expensive!

I didn't realize that. We have friends who bred a bulldog years ago – at that time they were still acquaintances, so I didn't get personal about the process:p -- but I never knew that.

Sad story - they have a backyard swimming pool and their bulldog drowned in it. The parents in the family were at work and got a frantic call from their daughter: the dog had apparently fallen in the pool and was completely unable to swim. She drowned there in front of the kids {jr high age girls} who were unable to get to her in time. {they'd seen her from the upstairs window and had to run down... just no time}. I guess those funky little legs can't paddle well.:(

  • How sad. A very good friend of mine had a bulldog. As he aged - and I heard this about dogs with "pushed in" faces and long backs (don't know if it's true) - his breathing was compromised. He was then diagnosed with epilepsy and developed pneumonia after the anesthesia for the CT scan and died. He sure could swim, though! He'd go out into the ocean and large lakes and fetch enormous sticks!
They are so very sweet and lovable, but I've heard other tales of woe about illness and disease. I've noticed a lot more of them around, come to think of it…

    That's very sad :(

My boyfriend's mother though about getting a bulldog before she did research (she has two sons in the Marines - why she wanted one) but they have serious health issues as they age & are prone to obesity, which causes even more health problems. She decided to find a different breed because she was too nervous to take on the health of a bulldog. They're sweet dogs but I know personally I would never own, nor breed them. That's why I was so shocked to see they were #10 on the most popular breed list. I hope the people who bought them know what they are getting into.

I remember walking her last summer around the Old Port in Portland and a whole group of people came running over saying…OMG, is that a Basenji? They were the only ones who've ever called it right when I've had her out and about.

    Dont you love that!
I have been stopped 2x when I was out walking Squiggy by people in cars. One lady asked if he was a Basenji and then said "I thought so, cute dog" and the other guy asked what he was and then had this look like he was too embarassed to ask what a basenji was but then added I had a fine looking dog.–--which I do:p
And even if people have the breed right (like at the dog park or petsmart) they still ask it with a question because he is a different color.

  • We've had people ask us if Cory was a Shiba Inu or a Fox Terrier. Most think she is a Fox Terrier. A couple weeks after we got her, we took her on vacation with us. At one spot, someone asked about her and before we knew it, we had attracted a little crowd. It was really strange and a little worrisome because we hadn't had her long enough to know how she was going to react to so much attention from strangers. It was definitely a new experience for us! Cory took it all in stride and looked like such attention was to be expected!!

@AJs: See, Dan? First you tick everybody off, now you make everybody cry. But you're still not getting off the hook that easy. You will NOT be banned and in fact will be required to stay. :D What?! That's it I'm going back to my stupid jokes!
