B's toys and kids

Basenji Training
  • Am I wrong to say kids should not play with your puppies toys? We don't have kids yet, and our pup is 8 months old. We have a friend, who brought over his 3 year old, and he's been around our pup before, but today the child decided to play with Mia's toys, which I knew was a bad idea. Mia kept jumping on the boy to try to get the toy, and my boyfriend was getting mad at me for not disciplining the dog, I mean we didn't let the dog maul the kid, but it's hard to hold her still when someone else is playing with her toys. Any suggestions on what to do when little kids are around?

  • Put the toys away. That way they are not a problem for the dog nor the child. If the child needs some play time while they are visiting then that is a good time for the dog to have some crate chew time with an extra good crate chewie.

  • good point in putting the toys away…but as far as the crate, I think my B is clostrophobic or something, because being enclosed freaks her out, which is weird because she was fine with the crate trainning at night when we first got her. Maybe I just give her too much the run of the house (although some parts of the house are gated and that's fine), and she thinks everything is hers. But from now on I will put her toys away if kids come over for a visit.

  • If your dog doesn't like being crated then maybe creating a "safe place" for when kids visit that the dog can be where it can have some time away from the kids.

@DebraDownSouth: Okay that is pretty funny! Glad the judge passed her. Hey, perhaps the judge appreciated the intelligence to go check something out then resume business? Thanks everyone. She had really lovely runs all weekend (except Sunday's Std run) and I'm so very, very proud of her. She went through a fear(?) period on courses towards the beginning of the year, so she's come a long way. And, DDS, no, agility judges do not appreciate creativity on course. If you don't believe me, ask Jet the trying. :D Of course I always thought maybe the judge watching Jet would think "Gosh, that really is a nicer course."

That's great that all of you can run with your Bs. They love to run and it always seemed like a natural and fun thing to do together. Alas, I tried and tried, but Spencer would dart right in front of me and trip me up. I hate to say it, but I finally just gave up before I took a nasty fall. Spencer would never even heel, much less run quietly beside me. He obeyed almost everything else, so I learned to accept our limitations.

Actually I have bought the muzzles in Austria at that shop: http://www.sofahund.at And yes, the dogs can open their mouths while running. This is the reason why I searched to find these muzzles. They also have the plastic-coated wire muzzles with the wire across the head. Regards, Esther

That was very nice for a first try. She will improve greatly as she becomes more seasoned. Beautiful little gal. You're doing well with her. Heck, just getting a Basenji to do all that is a triumph. I thought it was cute how she went around to greet the judges. Such a little ambassador.:D

I made a Photobucket album of this weekend. There are pictures of Beck & Lola & one picture of Beck's new puppy sister, Bon-Bon (her real name is pronounced Bonmee, but I don't know how to spell it) http://s228.photobucket.com/albums/ee290/carriesquires/ASFA%20Trial%20Winter%20Challenge/
