Bloat - The Mother of All (Pet) Emergencies

Off Topic
  • Though not specific to a breed, here's a very interesting article on vet emergency:

Lesson: If bloated, take your pet to (a competent) Vet as soon as possible… Or at least call the Vet for advise on what to do in your specific situation...

  • Fortunately bloat is more prevalent in the larger dogs, but can happen to any size. Friends with Great Danes were advised by their vet to use elevated feeders, saying that there is less gulping of air if the food is at the correct height. While I am not too worried about bloat, I got elevated feeders and my dogs like them. A small thing to do that helps with digestion.

@glenn-jalivay2 - Many use kibble and raw, usually what they do (myself included) is one meal would be kibble and one meal raw.... I agree with Redial about the age and taking a 6wk pup. In the US is is not legal in most all states to place pups less than 8wks. Basenjis in particular do much better at 10wks at least. They learn important lessons from littermates and other adults in the home from 6wks to 10wks. And I as a breeder do not feel they are mature enough to leave their littermates at 8wks. Always exceptions and that would be to an experienced Basenji home with an adult dog... as the adult will teach the pup way more that humans ever can.

@mauigirl: I had 2 people ask me if I'm a Mom yesterday. Both times I thought to say "I do have 2 dogs…". It totally counts. There's nothing like picking up poo to show commitment. Amen to that!!!!;)

I can't tell you how many pills I've wasted trying to get Senji to take his pills. Even when I hide them in a ball of ground up meat and mix it in with his food, he SMELLS the pill in there and eats everything around it, but leaves the balls with the pills in them. Sometimes I make a few "decoy" balls to try to fool him, but he knows the difference.
