    I have a question? My husband and I are coming down (w/out dogs) Feb 13 - 18. Planning on flying into Tampa and are trying to figure out where to stay. I'm pretty familiar with area from Tarpon to Ft. Myers Beach but many cottages/condos I know are only week rentals and we will not be there a week. So here is my question. Given the time of year - are we better off finding one place and staying there OR would there be enough availability for us to hop from city to city. I'm inclined to find a spot and relax so any ideas of a great spot near water would be appreciated.

    Wow, I'm right here in Tampa and don't have a clue! Personally, I would stay in one place, or maybe divide my time between 2 places. I think many beach cotteges and hotels will do per/day stays. And our tourist business is a little "off" so there might be more vacnacies than in past years. I don't know of any really cool places, sorry, we rarely go to the beach (isn't that sad?). I know a lot of people like Englewood, a small place just south of Sarasota. The beach is supposed to be really nide, it is a small, quet place.

    I usually go to the Clearwater Beach area. It depends on how close to the beach you want to stay. Most of the cheap "Mom and Pop" motel rentals at Clearwater Beach seem to be gone now, but most of the chain hotels are available within walking distance to the beach. It depends on how much money you're willing to spend.

    So far the couple I have contacted have that timeframe open but want a Sunday to Sunday week and we only have a wednesday to Sunday - they indicated that it was 'high season' and that they would be full. Although I'm not seeing a lot of evidence of that.

    I may take you up on that - if I can't get in where I typically stay and am familiar with. I've stayed in a couple of dives that I'd not care to return too.

    Seems like even if it's 'high' season - I should be able to risk waiting until I get there to see what the weather is like - I could go down to Fort Myers - I did that once before when it was too rainy and gloomy in Tampa area.

    I may just get one night somewhere certain and then just decide when I get there. Doesn't bother me much but hubby is a bit less willing to risk it.

    Hi IMBJ, I'm not in Japan but my son & grandsons live in the Bay Area and he has a friend who teaches in Tokyo. No word yet from her. I'm glad so glad the tsunami spared SF. I hope you and your B are okay!

    I think they're advertising the breed because they DON'T want her mistaken for a fox or a wolf, as she looks very wild. Last thing they want is for someone to shoot her thinking she's a dangerous predator. But they're downplaying her "rarity" for fear of exactly what you describe – that someone will just decide to keep her instead. At least she's spayed. They've supposedly hit Craigslist, FindFido, Petfinder, Dogster, breed mailing lists, rescue groups, even Reddit.

    @wizard: Ah, but that was the old names for these hybrids. Now the PC term is anything with "oodle" at the end. No no no. If we're going to be PC, the correct PC term is "Designer Breed." Because you don't want to leave out the "ugles" of the world (pugles & the like), and it sound so fancy, like a dog Paris Hilton would have. I love it when people assume my girls are some unique & exotic (mixed breed) designer dogs, and they are always dissappointed when I tell them "No, its just a unique & exotic purebred primitive dog that's been around much much much longer than designer dogs." I actually had somebody at the dog park ask me if they were basenjis one day, and I replied Yes they are. They then asked "So they're miniatures?" I said "No, they are both within standard, just at the very small end of the standard." They insisted again they were toy basenjis. Whatever. :rolleyes:

    Good to know about the Vizslas.. really lovely dogs - I met one at my Vet office the other day and he was a truly stunning dog. The owner told me they are super up for hiking which was a major plus. Gotta love our dogs who keep our toes jumping, heheh! Looove the Shiba-Inu story! I have been wary of the Shibas cause I have met more than a handful - and none of them turned out to be very nice with ppl out side of "their ppl". I was afraid they might be too sensitive for my lifestyle, but they are soooooo pretty!! With those coats! –if you make it over you can bring your BW =) heheh! This is just a random side comment - but in looking at a bunch of different breeders, I'm surprised that so many of them don't describe their dogs temperaments/behaviors etc. They talk about their breeding programs but not much about the dogs - seems like every real Basenji breeder's site has a page devoted to 'WARNING!' curious owners to be.. heheh! although I read this on a Husky breeders site and I had to laugh: "Left unattended for long periods of time can lead them to seeking something to take the place of that lack of attention. They may even tear something up." rephrased in Basenji terms: Left unattended for long or short periods of time will lead them to seeking something to take the place of that lack of attention..They will utterly destroy a variety of objects in your house, this is to be expected. Deal.

    @LeeL: If you do go back to hardwood. I would recommend staying with Oak. We had oak floors in our last house and have Hickory now and the Oak was much better at resisting denting. You can see a few places after 18 months where the claw marks made a dent in the surface. I never saw that in 5 years of Oak. We have oak and it is standing up beautifully with three dogs {and Gypsy is fairly heavy} and all the kids {who are forever dragging their dining chairs across the floor despite dh's constant harping to 'lift, lift, lift" } The only dent is from where dh dropped the stereo when he was putting the room back together immediately after installing the floor :D I love it. It's tougher than we were told it would be and so easy to clean.
