I am on a few other lists and will see if I can track down anyone that has a Basenji that is diabetic and let you know in a private message what I find.

  • I am also told by someone that had diabetic Basenjis that Dr. Gonto should be consulted before treatment.
Also I put out an email to someone that had and treated a diabetic Basenji for years. I am waiting to her back from her.

  • I don't have any advice on basenjis with diabetes, but my family owned a mini pin mix that had it. We got him on a good diet to help with it, but he would need insulin twice a day. We had a human glucometer, and would use the inside of his lip to check his bloodsugar twice a day.
Your vet should be able to get you set up with it and tell you how to manage it.

  • i would appreciate anything you can find - is Dr Gonto a vet - my doc looked at the protocol and didn't see it - but any advice you have i would love - my email address is the same as my name tewwi22@aol.com

Didn't see what? It says at the top Fanconi Diesese Management Protocol for Veterinarians and under that heading, Steve Gonto, M.M.SC., PH.D. and no he is not a vet but the person that saved so very many Basenji lives with "his" development of the protocol. And has been published in Veterinarian publications. I am guessing that your Vet was not/is not familar with Fanconi Protocol?
Anyway I am sending you a private message that has the name and email of a Vet Tech here on the West Coast that manages many diabetic dogs (not Basenjis) but she is a Basenji owner/breeder/person…

  • where do you get the private posts?

  • foound it - thanks

Yes, Spencer is much better now, but he is still very thin. He lost six pounds. Even strong antibiotics cannot fight a severe abscess. I'm sure your vet found and resolved the problem under anesthesia, so that should put Egyn over the hump. SubQs and a few weeks of antiobiotics will hopefully get him back on the road to health. I had to feed Spencer critical care dog food through a syringe for several days after the surgery, then make him special soft food– the aforementioned meatballs-- for weeks after that. Good luck to you-- and positive thoughts to Egyn!

It's most likely a yeast infection. They get it in the ears quite often. Buddy has a yeast infection right now on his stomach.

Hi, I have had a similar problem with my (11-13? Y/O) Basenji female, Zeenie. She isn't blind but I know her vision isn't good. I know her blood sugar was somewhat abnormal at her last blood test, but like your dog, it was right after a seizure and I understand that is to be expected. Her first seizure was this past August and she has been to the vet several times for testing, etc. since. There is no conclusive diagnosis but 1/2 the dose of a 32.4 mcg pill of Phenobarbital twice daily (given religiously at 12 hour intervals) seems to eliminate the seizures altogether (knock on wood.) I don't know what our next step is. I know I don't want any thing invasive, but I also can't afford an MRI: maybe an EEG or CT scan? If there is anyone else out there with advice, that would be welcome. Anyway, if you need support or just want to vent or brainstorm together, please let me know. I am in NC in the US (EST.) and maybe we can exchange phone info later. Best of luck to you. I know how you feel. Lauma

Our red girl dog has the same problem. Freaks out when you touch her ears with a swab, but loves the inside of her ears rubbed when petting her. You know the two handed ear & cheek rub. That gave me an idea!. I found some real soft white - tight gardening gloves (unused), gave her an ear massage and cleaned her ears out. it worked well. I was extra careful not to push the dirt down her ears, but did kind of a wiping motion out and away from her inner ears. She loved it!

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. We have been running him with our other dogs in our yard, we have about half acre or so, and he is fast..He loves it, just don't think he is used to out heat yet, it is already about 85+ degrees and very humid…I think he looks good, he is definitely babychunky, not fat, but what I envision a puppy looking like before he grows into his own body. We will keep up with what we have done so far and see what he turns out like...can't be bad, just beautiful.. Basenjimamma
